"This sounds a little like the Pentagon’s version of the AA’s excellent Route Planner, which can also 'guide' you from A to B and avoid the bank holiday jams. Handy, but not really the guarantee of safety that an international shipping company and its crews need." Sean O'Grady
At first glance, the latest product of the strategic mind of Donald J Trump looks promising, not to say valiant and brave. “Project Freedom”, so much more gentle-sounding and uplifting than operations Midnight Hammer and Epic Fury, is nothing less than, in his words, a “humanitarian gesture” designed to rescue “neutral and innocent” crews stranded for weeks and build “goodwill” in the conflict. It’s all very well, but there are at least three things wrong with the project that suggest it’s not been fully thought through. Quelle surprise, as they say in Tehran.

First, according to Trump, the project sounds like it’s almost a joint operation with Iran, a sort of modern maritime version of the Christmas Day truce between the Germans and the British, when Tommies and Fritzes emerged from the trenches to play football and swap stories. Trump, with chutzpah unusual even for him, declares he’s doing all this on behalf of the “United States, Middle Eastern Countries but, in particular, the Country of Iran.” Which is odd, because this restriction on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz is Iran’s blockade, not his own, and he’s not proposing to lift his own embargo on traffic moving into and out of Iran’s ports.

"The dress code is said to encourage guests to think about how they can use their bodies as a blank canvas. In which case, don’t boycott the Met Gala, Zendaya and co. Do the opposite: air your views in front of the paparazzi." | Victoria Richards
I don’t think we should be removing ourselves to leave an absence; we should be taking up space to call out injustice – and show integrity through action. A protest is a protest because it says the quiet parts out loud, and clothing has long been a symbol of protest, from the suffragette colours to the black berets of the Black Panthers. And so, when it comes to the Met Gala, what better way to inspire a younger generation – and to highlight dissatisfaction with Jeff Bezos – than going to the world’s biggest fashion event and calling out the billionaires, right in front of their faces?

After all, what’s interesting to me is that the theme of this year’s Met Gala is “Costume Art,” to apparently explore the “centrality of the dressed body” through depictions and interpretations of the human form in the Met museum’s collection. The dress code is said to encourage guests to think about how they can use their bodies as a “blank canvas”.

In which case, don’t boycott the Met Gala, Zendaya and co. Do the opposite: air your views in front of the paparazzi. Wear those same anti-Bezos or anti-ICE or anti-billionaire slogans on your bodies. Showcase them scrawled across a T-shirt; emblazon them across your Dior-clad chests. Autograph them on flyers and scatter them like confetti. Ensure the entire world is watching. We need you to make a fuss on our behalf and make a statement on the red carpet, which is exactly where you belong.

"The 77-year-old monarch gave a masterclass in diplomacy and charm that won plaudits round the globe. The good news for William is that the King has showed the monarchy can still be relevant." Simon Walters on the State visit and succession.
By common consent, King Charles’s hugely successful trip to the US has enabled him finally to emerge from the long shadow cast by the late Queen Elizabeth II. But the family ramifications of the remarkable visit extend beyond his relationship with his late mother.

I would argue there are significant consequences for his sons Prince William and Prince Harry, positive and negative in both cases. For years, before and after he succeeded to the throne, it has been argued that the royals should ‘skip a generation’, with Charles breaking the hereditary principle by voluntarily standing down in favour of William.

He was too old, outdated and grumpy to be a popular and effective 21st-century monarch and forever tainted by his messy divorce from Lady Diana, some said. Much better to hand over to young dashing William with his finger on the pulse of modern concerns like mental health, homelessness and early childhood development, with glamorous and pitch perfect wife Catherine at his side.

In the space of a few days in America the outlook has changed as quickly as an Atlantic squall. Confronted with one of the most difficult assignments a British monarch has faced in modern history, King Charles’s image appears transformed.

The 77-year-old monarch gave a masterclass in diplomacy and charm, displaying courtesy and courage - leavened with a comic timing worthy of a stand-up entertainer – that won plaudits round the globe. The good news for William is that the King has showed the monarchy can still be relevant.

"It’s not always politicians’ favourite answer, but the honest truth is that we don’t fully know what is driving the rising demand for mental health services or how best to meet it." Wes Streeting on the mental health crisis – and how to address it.
No one can deny we have a come a long way in this country towards banishing the myths, misunderstandings, and stigma surrounding mental illness.

As a society, we’re more open to telling our stories, talking things through, seeking therapy and, crucially, supporting friends, family or even colleagues to do the same when they feel unable to support themselves.

Combined with changes in our everyday lives, like the amount of time we all now spend on screens and social media , we are seeing a rise in the numbers of people in need of mental health services. The NHS has struggled to keep up. The result is children waiting not weeks or months, but years, for mental health treatment.

In his speech to Labour Party conference 2021, Keir Starmer called it one of the urgent needs of our time. In our manifesto, we committed to recruiting an additional 8,500 mental health workers by the end of the Parliament, to meet rising demand.

We have delivered on that promise, and we’ve done so three years early.

"This has not only begun to profoundly change what it means to be Jewish in the 21st century but will come to change Western culture." – @benjudah.bsky.social on the return of antisemitism
Future historians will certainly look back at Jewish life in the late 20th century in English-speaking countries as a golden age of the diaspora — even surpassing the brilliance of medieval Spain or Enlightenment Germany. Fading into twilight since the millennium, that sun has now decidedly set. This has not only begun to profoundly change what it means to be Jewish in the 21st century but will come to change Western culture.

The end of the Jewish golden age in English-speaking countries will mean many things. First and foremost Jewish communities living behind ever higher levels of securitisation. But it will also change something more fundamental about our cultural life. The late 20th century was a unique moment without mass antisemitism when Jews felt confident for the first time to invite the West truly into their culture and share as artists, writers and comedians. From Philip Roth to Woody Allen, they injected irreverence, creativity and a certain wild joy into Anglo-culture that amazingly enriched our arts. In the late 20th century there was such hunger and enthusiasm for academia, universities and progressive politics from Jewish thinkers – from Harold Bloom and Isaiah Berlin to Ralph Miliband – that no aspect of them was not enriched in some way or another by Jewishness.

"Indeed if the high street is to have any hope of reviving its fortunes – and it’s quite possible to doubt that – Primark will have to be involved." Read James Moore on Primark's demerger.
It was alway an odd marriage, even in Primark’s early days. Clothes alongside sugar, Ovaltine, Twinings Tea, Kingsmill bread and AB enzymes. If the group didn’t exist, no one would dream of inventing it. The oft rumoured spin off, which was repeatedly batted aside with a ‘never happen’ or something like that, would have been done years ago were ABF not controlled by the billionaire Weston family, which had the clout to tell the City to pipe down. It didn’t hurt that they made it work.

But Primark, expected to be valued at £13bn, really is now at the stage where it needs its freedom, its own boss, its own governance, and the ability to be nimble in an industry that demands it. This matters on Planet Retail, where Primark long ago supplanted M&S as an anchor tenant for retail parks and the core component of what remains of the nation’s high streets.

Indeed if the high street is to have any hope of reviving its fortunes – and it’s quite possible to doubt that – Primark will have to be involved.

"If Starmer has managed to wriggle off the hook, then Robbins certainly did nothing wrong. I know which of them I think deserves better." Read the Sean O'Grady sketch on the battle of the knights.
Doyle, you may recall, was made a peer, but was later suspended from the Lords when it emerged he had helped a friend charged with possessing indecent images of children. At the time, before that story broke, Robbins managed the problem away because he was making real, experienced, senior diplomats redundant and couldn’t justify parachuting in a Labour spin doctor to head a mission. He thus saved Starmer from another embarrassment.

That move represented only one of Robbins’s multiple services to the nation – and, as it happens, to Starmer, who never gave the guy a chance to explain and defend himself over the Mandelson vetting allegations, according to Robbins himself. If Starmer has managed to wriggle off the hook, then Robbins certainly did nothing wrong. I know which of them I think deserves better.

"Sir Keir’s reason for sacking Sir Olly is, essentially: 'You should have stopped me from bullying you into doing exactly what I wanted.' "This is no way to run a government." Read The Independent View on Sir Olly Robbins' questioning by MPs.
Sir Keir’s reason for sacking Sir Olly is, essentially: “You should have stopped me from bullying you into doing exactly what I wanted.”

This is no way to run a government. The prime minister said he takes responsibility for the Mandelson decision, and he has apologised to the victims of Jeffrey Epstein, “who were clearly failed by my decision”. And yet, by sacking Sir Olly, he implies that he was not solely responsible for the decision after all.

The departure of Morgan McSweeney, Sir Keir’s former chief of staff, who was an advocate of Lord Mandelson’s cause – and possibly that of Sir Chris Wormald, the former cabinet secretary, who also did not know about the doubts of the vetters – also seems to fit this pattern.
