The marble & bronze sarcophagus memorial for Cardinal Pietro Foscari (d 1485) looks incongruous in the Costa Chapel, Santa Maria del Popolo, Rome That’s because it was originally in the Foscari Chapel, which was demolished in 1600 The 1505 altarpiece by Gian Cristoforo Romano is also magnificent

The Church of Sant'Agata dei Goti (Saint Agatha of the Goths) in Rome features a Cosmatesque ciborium thought to be from the 13th century It was reassembled from fragments in the 1920s

So many beautiful things to see in Cologne, I wouldn’t presume to send you a list. But for further inspiration search my posts here and the app formerly known as Twitter for “Cologne” or even “Bonn” (as it’s very close and also nice)

Yes, perhaps my favourite museum, beautiful pieces and at a size that’s “manageable” I find places like V&A, MANN in Naples, Altes Museum in Berlin etc just too big and overwhelming

The church would be magnificent pretty much anywhere else in the world, in Rome it’s C List in terms of priorities 😂 but certainly the Burne-Jone work and the Clayton and Bell glass are a cure for homesickness

Close up view of Spoleto Cathedral’s beautiful facade and striking Byzantine style mosaic, which depicts Christ giving a Benediction, signed & dated 1207 by Solsternus. He called himself an outstanding modern artist, as evidenced by his inscription “Doctor Solsternus, hac summus in arte modernus.”
