Behind every policy debate this week are people like this young girl. The system was supposed to protect her and her family. It failed them.

→ Scale without accountability scales the risk of harm. As the bank mobilizes private finance at unprecedented scale, its accountability system must be just as strong.

→ Others follow the World Bank’s lead. The World Bank Inspection Panel and the CAO inspired independent accountability mechanisms across development finance. Weakening them risks a race to the bottom.

As the World Bank Annual Meetings open in Bangkok, here’s what’s at stake: → Accountability has to be independent. If findings only count when management agrees, there is no accountability.

Meanwhile, the board is creating a new accountability mechanism for the Bank It promises the new body will be independent & won’t roll back rights complainants have today. After overruling its current watchdog, why should anyone take those promises at face value?

Inclusive Development International @inclusivedevt.bsky.social · 15h
For the first time in history, the World Bank’s board sided with management and rejected its watchdog’s findings. It then barred the CAO from taking similar complaints, closing the door to recourse for millions of borrowers.

Her family’s lenders were funded by the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation (IFC). The bank’s own watchdog, the Compliance Advisor Ombudsman (CAO), found that IFC failed to follow its own policies across its microfinance investments in Cambodia, & those failures contributed to major harm.

A Cambodian girl was 14 when a loan officer told her family to sell her to a business known for sex work to pay off their microfinance debt. That’s the family’s account. The lender denies it but confirmed he told her to start working. She hasn’t gone back to school since.

🚨 An estimated $39 million for @ifcorg.bsky.social, the World Bank's private-sector arm. $0 for the 120,000+ people harmed. It earned that return from a Philippine bank that financed 10 new coal plants. Its own watchdog found it contributed to the harm. 🧵

Over the past week, we have discussed how the World Bank Group’s new independent accountability mechanism needs a policy that puts communities first. For the issues we've discussed, the Compliance Advisor Ombudsman’s policy has the strongest provisions and should be the basis of the new IAM policy.

Inclusive Development International @inclusivedevt.bsky.social · 28/08/2026
On day five of our discussion on the World Bank Group’s new IAM policy, we are discussing recommendations for ensuring that the IAM’s key functions—dispute resolution, compliance review, and advisory—effectively address communities’ concerns and facilitate remedy and institutional change.

Inclusive Development International @inclusivedevt.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
Today is day three of our discussion on how to ensure that the World Bank Group’s new accountability mechanism is community centered. Today’s topic: Ensuring communities can access the complaint process in the first place.

Inclusive Development International @inclusivedevt.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
We are on day two of our discussion on what the World Bank Group’s new independent accountability mechanism needs to effectively address harms that hurt communities and undermine sustainable development. Today, we are spotlighting the importance of how the new IAM’s leadership is selected.

Inclusive Development International @inclusivedevt.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
The WBG Board has committed to non-regression & it's imperative that commitment makes it into the new policy. Over the next five days we will highlight key building blocks for a strong accountability mechanism & why it matters for the communities. First up: the IAM must have a remedy mandate.

Inclusive Development International @inclusivedevt.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
The World Bank is merging its 3 independent accountability mechanisms for handling concerns about environmental & social harms & human rights abuses into one new office. It is critical that the new office has a strong policy foundation, starting w/ the strongest policies of the existing mechanisms.
