I’m saddened by this news. Hervé is a top scholar and I don’t understand Elsevier’s actions here.

This belief was refuted 250 years ago in The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith, whose thesis was that prosperity comes to a nation through specialization and trade, not tariffs and protectionism.

I had parenting theories I was very confident about for 4 kids. And then my 5th kid threw a bunch of those theories out the window. He’s on the spectrum, and those theories mainly had to do with the need to be consistent to the point of stubbornness. Learned that some kids need flexibility.

By the way, I would absolutely take the coin flip. I think my certainty equivalent for the 50/50 gamble is in the $300k-350k range. But that is just me.

PhD economist here. I agree that the large percentage of people choosing the sure thing was surprising. I disagree that there is “absolutely a right answer”. Given typical levels of risk aversion, I would expect people in the bottom quartile of the wealth distribution to choose the sure thing.

1-panel SMBC comic update. A young child holding a bag is asking why they are the ones doing chores when adults are "way faster at them anyways." A man facing away from the camera answers : "because... Because having you take out the trash means I can do higher-value work which... Oh. MY. GOD." The caption under the panel reads : "It was a great day for David Ricardo. David Ricardo was a British economist and politician, recognized as one of the most influential economists.

When I was a professor, I was happy to give any accommodation that the accommodation office gave a student. And for people worried about the “real world”, actually federal law also requires employers to make accommodations for people with disabilities.

It’s just morally reprehensible to say an immigrant “took” a house from a citizen, when what they actually did was bought it (or rented it) with their own money that they earned by producing something of value.

Special education isn't a "nice thing to have." It isn't "charity" or doing something to make us feel better. It is a right. The right to a Free Appropriate Public Education is codified in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, signed by a Republican president.
