[llm, adventures in slop] @wolf480pl 1. i got frustrated in my first manual attempt, so probably not. if i got to the reading kernel source part (what the llm did) it'd be interesting but still frustrating because: 2. there wasn't even a code mistake, it's purely user error. i flipped the wrong […]

[llm, adventures in slop] Turns out I was using the stupid model (Sonnet vs Opus) by default, so I switched. Another 150k of context (mostly loading what the previous one did) later, it poked a few more files in sysfs and it figured it out. I have mixed feelings about this. Could I have done […]

[llm, adventures in slop] I gave Anthropic 20 bucks and ran Claude Code (with manual approval of every shellout) with a pretty basic prompt (this is the problem, the running kernel is in /usr/src/linux/, any other info you can get from sysfs or pactl, figure it out). It spent hundreds of […]

[llm, adventures in slop] context: I got a Thinpad T14gen6 AMD recently and installed #gentoo on it. Besides the typical oopsie of forgetting to compile in a touchpad driver or something, it works almost flawlessly. Almost. The mute LED on the f1 key doesn't work. I tried some easy things with […]

[llm, adventures in slop] In light of all the recent hype, I decided to see how LLMs deal with truly weird problems, not just webslop. I assumed they'd fail in a spectacular and entertaining way at debugging linux audio. Turns out, at great token […] [Original post on social.hackerspace.pl]
screenshot of claude code tui, main conclusion:

Root Cause

  The ALC257 codec (hdaudioC1D0) is bound to snd_hda_codec_generic (built-in, CONFIG_SND_HDA_GENERIC=y) instead of snd_hda_codec_alc269 (CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_REALTEK=m).

Why: SND_HDA_CORE=y makes bind.c built-in, which means #ifdef MODULE is false — so request_codec_module() is a no-op. When the HDA controller probes the ALC257, no specific driver is loaded yet,
so codec_bind_generic() claims it with HDA_CODEC_ID_GENERIC. When snd_hda_codec_alc269 loads later (via udev), probe_id is already set to HDA_CODEC_ID_GENERIC, so the Realtek driver's
  hda_codec_match() fails to match.

Consequence: The ThinkPad ACPI fixup (hda_fixup_thinkpad_acpi) never runs → vmaster_mute_led stays 0 → Master Playback Switch gets no SNDRV_CTL_ELEM_ACCESS_SPK_LED flag →
ctl-led/speaker/card1/list is empty → the audio-mute LED trigger never fires.

RE: social.hackerspace.pl/@implr/116113… i should finally get around to reporting the zfs catastrophe this causes as a bug device falls of the bus, kernel removes it, any zfs kthread that tried to touch that pool gets stuck, any userspace io ends in D, can't even export the pool

i was wrong on the IPO though, looks like that will happen now as long as they can get it in before the spacex ipo, which will mark a market top before we have a recession caused by ai capex popping

i wanted to post a "tapping the sign" dunk re: discord and realized mine is older than my fedi presence a bit of a miss with the metaverse though
screenshot of a tweet posted by myself:

I'm amazed that people consider Discord a viable alternative for moving communities to.
If you're scared of musk twitter, what are you going to do when FB buys Discord in a desperate bid to get Gamers into the metaverse?
They're unprofitable and VC funded. It's inevitable.

@whitequark I think a lot of this is a function of the host language. Scala simultaneously has an advanced type system and a lot of syntactical magic. There's many bits of Spinal where if you want to understand what they *actually* do (eg to debug them) you also need to learn an obscure language […]

fucking insane. some fish use electrical signals to navigate; if two fish on the same frequency encounter each other, they automatically switch frequencies to avoid "signal jamming" each other. exactly like how your wifi router does at home. wow.
