Yep, I have a legal copy of CS5 on my old laptop and have simply refused to update the OS so that I can still run it. The laptop can't use a browser anymore because it's so out of date, it's pretty much strictly an offline device, but it runs just fine.

My friend was visiting and while we did not go to see Busan's new, apparently determinedly self-domesticating shark (it swam into a canal and now WILL NOT leave)... she DID sing about it. And now every time I hear about Bukangi, I hear in my head that awful refrain, "Busan shark ddururu dduru..."

For the record, Michael would not actually have tried to stop me. He would have done a few very eloquently dubious eyebrow wiggles, though. Maybe patted my head, too. I miss him very much.

We did definitely find that there was an advantage to taking the first player penalty each round. It varied, but on the whole was stronger than not.

Funny thing, I just played this for the better part of a Wednesday morning and lost every single game. It probably didn't HELP that my meds left me a space cadet who couldn't remember a strategy from one moment to the next, but it might just be a game that I am consistently bad at. Some games are.

I have decided, I think, to name the little cat shaped spoon rest that lives beside my coffee maker so that I always have somewhere to set my stirring spoon, and the bright side of living alone is that absolutely nobody can stop me. Henceforth his name shall be Purrcalator.
A small black and white and brown cat-shaped spoon and chopstick rest, in an elongated loaf position on a speckled gray counter next to a black coffee maker.

In Korea, almost all the microwaves I could find for sale had ONLY presets. Not even a twirly dial to set precise times, the dial ones mostly just had like minute increments and obscure labeling. I spent a significant amount of time hunting down my microwave, and it's a localized foreign model.

I used to have a fourth hand convenience store microwave and it very much did not do that. My other favorite thing is a feature that Michael insisted on but sadly never got to experience: it has a number pad and a precise to the second time cook function. It is alarming how hard that was to find.

I'm down for everyone to get a universal basic income. I still want to see every model erased and every data center destroyed. You don't get to rob us and then just pay us so you can keep doing it. The models and data hoards have to go, and the harm has to stop. That is what justice looks like.

My favorite thing about my new microwave is that it has a built in ADHD defense function. If you forget to open it and remove your food when the timer goes off, then after a minute it will beep again LOUDER. It will keep doing this at intervals until you pay attention and get your food.

Signs point to him wanting me to step on him some more. He has ignored the kibble and water even when reminded they exist but he keeps leading me to the kitchen and then flopping down at my feet, which is how he usually asks for steppies. He's just being EXTRA insistent about it now.

Impy @impchan.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
I have given this cat playtime, and gooshy, and kibble, and fresh water, and a clean litterbox, and multiple rounds of steppies, and even standing up over the shoulder cuddles (which he only rarely even wants). So WHY is he still meowing in my doorway at 2am? What more can he possibly need?!

How do we incentivize people to paint wizards on their vans again I haven’t seen a wizard van in a decade and it feels like we lost something precious Can we offer up a tax credit? Little bags of shrooms? Start a wizard van painting program at vocational schools?

The incident fits a broader pattern in the discourse around 'free speech' and 'cancel culture': whatever comes from the top down is freedom; whatever comes from the bottom up is bullying and censorship. When Macklemore is dropped at the behest of the billionaire stadium owner Robert Kraft, it's an exercise of the freedom of businesses to 'demonstrate their values' by deciding whom to platform. But when Ed Sheeran's fans decide not to buy tickets to his performances, or even demand refunds, it's bullying, mob behaviour. Since most people are not billionaires and do not own stadiums, they can exercise meaningful power only collectively. The collective exercise of power must therefore be demonised.

Like, I'm not even talking about the morality involved here. I could, but that's a different conversation. This is a purely pragmatic observation that the key to a successful government is not to make your population hate and distrust you. A child can understand it. Powerful people somehow never do.

Impy @impchan.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
People need space to be a little bit bad without looking over their shoulder. If they're kept afraid to fart for long enough, the result tends to be... explosive. A surveillance state means there is no remaining relationship of trust between the people & the government. So their mandate is lost.
120
Impy @impchan.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Y'know, historically, populations do not tolerate an excessive sense of surveillance. Governments can get away with it for a little while, maybe a couple of years, a decade or so if they ramp it up slowly enough, but historically populations are quicker to revolt when they have no sense of privacy.

It is possible that my personal list of the best shows I've seen this century contains a disproportionate number of heists and cons. And I probably do allow more for disappointing final seasons because what matters to me more is how engaged I am along the way. I also include cartoons.

Impy @impchan.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
It can be assumed that NYT intended as well that they mean "shows watched by English-speaking audiences" because I have seen some brilliant and engaging shows made this century in French, Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, and Turkish just to name a few, and they were not apparently considered.
120
Impy @impchan.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
I would like to be fully informed regarding the criteria and evaluation system, because both Leverage and Galavant were made this century, and yet somehow neither of these brilliant shows appears on this list. "Most popular" I'd believe, but "best" is a judgment you'll have to defend.

Hey, vendor booths and exhibitors at cons. Real talk. If you have artwork as part of your booth decor, or as products that you sell, And your answer to the question “was any of this artwork made by AI” is “I don’t know” That’s unacceptable. Credit your artists, and don’t sell slop art.

So apropos of nothing in particular, let’s talk about media tie-in novel pay vs. original work pay, shall we? Let’s say you write a novel. It’s set in your own world, your own characters, and titled The Original. You get a book deal! Look at you go!

I still quote this regularly and people ALWAYS look horrified... Unless they know the reference. Then they usually just say they love the show.

Maybe we can bring back that explorer's spirit! That'd be great, for art and for the internet. But we will have to fight the platforms to do it, even though they're helping by enshittifying themselves on a regular basis... Because a lot of their users now DO NOT KNOW how to really use the internet.
040
Impy @impchan.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
You cannot build an audience of explorers on today's internet. Even outside of Korea, a lot of it is social media and apps, and people just aren't in the mindset to go visit a lot of decentralized sites if they haven't effectively grown up doing it. That's a pretty narrow band of the population.
140
Impy @impchan.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
So the next generation who bought into platform publishing were not wrong to see the value of that approach. We did it too, kinda! There were and are extremely valid reasons to publish your comics that way. They're just not really reasons that can be counted on to last.
130
Impy @impchan.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
Us old schoolers, we built our first audiences among people who were used to exploring. We could catch their eye with a webring, or a crossover comic, or just causing enough drama so everyone mentioned it on their site. But a lot of us also used collective hosts, at first. Even if we left later.
130
Impy @impchan.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
These days, they don't even necessarily spend all that much time on the platforms as websites. Everything is an app now. Everything. Except your independent comic site. Why and how would readers ever hear of you?
130
Impy @impchan.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
But in Korea, you also flat out cannot find an audience unless you're on a platform. Even grannies on the subway read webcomics, but they aren't going to go find them. Wandering the wilds of the internet is just not a thing most Koreans prioritize when platforms already serve everything up for them.
130
Impy @impchan.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
Additionally, when Korean webcomic or webnovel platforms take on a work, they take it on as entirely as they can get away with. The license granted to them in the contract is incredibly broad and largely exclusive. You can't run your own site AND publish with them, not without a bit of a fight.
131
Impy @impchan.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
It's not that individual websites don't exist. They do! But the primary expectation for internet usage always ran through a handful of platforms. Webcomic platforms are just an offshoot of that, and in Korea they've been very successful because Koreans are used to the internet working that way.
130
Impy @impchan.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
I am fully in agreement with all the rest of the old school webcomics folks who say to publish on your own site. I was there for the Keenspot exodus to independent sites, it happened for a reason (or many). BUT, I also live in Korea, and I have to tell you... Internet here does not work that way.

Even with the resilience of the very young, I wouldn't be surprised if that kid's throat hurts tomorrow. It's hard not to worry, when you hear something like that. It's hard to hear it and know there is nothing you can do to help.

I think it's the way you can hear the vocal cords getting blown out that does it. Usually people who are crying/screaming have a little thing in their heads that keeps them from truly crossing into that level of self harm. Their screams may have a BIT of fry, but they aren't tearing their way out.

I wonder what it was? Nobody in that state is in any condition to communicate the issue, and anyways since I'm a disabled foreigner too pained to get off the couch it's not like I could go ask even if they were, but I do wonder.

Impy @impchan.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
That doesn't mean that whatever it was would be something reasonable from an adult point of view. It just means the kid was past the point of being anything but fully engaged in their distress. Whatever the cause, nothing existed for them except getting out the rage & fear as fully as possible.

Impy @impchan.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
There is a very young child having an absolutely screaming meltdown outside, and I can tell from the way the screams are bouncing off the buildings that they are being pulled away. There are crying kids, and then there is whatever was ending that kid's entire world, and the two DO NOT sound alike.

I asked about covid and flu, but it won't be available here until mid-October, and usually is first offered to people over 75. But the doctor says since I'm immunocompromised, I may still be able to get it then.

The drawback of the booster shot is that all of my regular chronic muscle aches are still there, BUT now my arm hurts enough worse that moving it is a problem. I had popcorn for dinner because I could prepare it one handed.

I know, I know. Practically nobody gets tetanus anymore (out of 8 billion, about 75,000 a year is still approaching zero percent). But that's because they get their vaccines! I am an absolute klutz and spending a lot more time at public beaches. I will get my booster shots REGULARLY, thank you.

And after finishing one and a half donuts and about 3 and a half slices of bacon, what do you know? My body magically feels SO MUCH BETTER. It's amazing what a full night of sleep and a load of fat and sugar will do for you, that's all I'm saying. Sometimes you really do need the "unhealthy" food.

So the coffee and donuts (most of which I'll freeze because 2 donuts is the absolute limit of my sugar tolerance) arrive, and after the first few lifesaving sips of coffee I remember that I like bacon with my donuts, and there's half a pack in the fridge from when my friend visited, so I cook some.

Today my visiting friend and I did a Certified Old Person thing and took our beach chairs and paperback books and went to the beach to sit near the water and read. We did also swim, but we're getting to the end of the season for that so we only spent maybe 40 minutes in the water, if that.
