I am now 29. Yet it feels so hollow when I hoped you would be here for this birthday. I wish I had something better to share for my birthday, my best shots since the last one. I only have my writing though, and I would like to share that in honor of his memory. He always wanted me to write more.💜

Grief

Grief visits me often these days, silently taking the seat across from me with that look of holding the words you never want to hear. The words never come, they never have to.

I thought I would fight it, but it never takes a swing at me; It is not evil, as terrifying as it may seem. Grief is haunted by its grim duty, unable to find the words, it can only give you that piteous expression that you remember all too well.

It carries its devastating duty whether you wish it or not. A far nobler duty than it would seem for something so terrifying. Its duty takes lives, shatters dreams, ruins futures. It bears this all, knowing it must stay with you; A vessel of memory, seen but never touched.

Grief sits on my sofa, it follows me in the stores and cafes, it sits in my passenger seat. I never asked for it, yet it sits there, waiting for me to lock eyes with it and remember.

It is strange how tragedy becomes such an intimate thing when you are exposed to it for long enough.

Tragedy is the childhood home that clings to memory. Tragedy is my best friend who knows my greatest secrets, my shame, my guilt. It never leaves me alone, always returning just when I begin to forget.

Tragedy attended my birth and it will attend my wake.

Yet I persist in the face of it, no matter how it barges in once I begin to feel safe again. In spite of my persistence though, I fear the day it visits my loved ones on my behalf.

Tragedy will write my eulogy, The woman who persevered until she could no longer.

I only hope that eulogy is far from now, while I sit here and wait for it to open my door once more.

There is comfort and cruelty in the way life just continues.

I sit in my livingroom, reading my books, watching TV, as life passes by my window. Families go on walks. Neighbors talk about their days, their gardens. Children run up and down the street, laughing and telling stories. People go about their day, full of joy or sorrow, maybe nothing much at all. There is comfort to be found in that.

Life just continues, comforting in its ability to continue and cruel in the way I sit here, feeling a deep, agonizing pain I've never felt before. As I struggle to pick up the pieces of myself, knowing that whatever I put back together will never be the same as it once was. That there is a hole in my heart that will never be filled.

Life just continues.

The days are more beautiful than ever. The city is lush, green and vibrant. A beauty that I haven't seen since I was a child, perhaps it was always this beautiful and I never noticed. Its strange how grief has altered my perception of the world, how it has renewed the beauty I see in life. The sunrise is magical, bathing the skies pink, orange, then blossoming into day. The clouds become great castles in the sky, shining down upon us. Every sunset becomes a painting, made just for me.

I witness this beauty in a way like never before. Every street and trail becomes an adventure. The food and drinks taste sweeter and saltier. The parks are quiet--yet full of life with birds, squirrels and people.

Yet despite all this beauty, my heart tears and tightens when I can no longer share it with you. That we will never have another conversation. There will never be another night spent talking about everything and nothing. We will never share an inside joke and laugh until we're in tears. There will never be a comfortable silence spent together.

Things will never be the same, but there is still beauty to be found.

I do keep an eye on this still, even if I've stopped interacting. But the trending tab has reminded me of much. You can do everything right, and it still might not be enough. It isn't a personal failing, but it doesn't make it hurt any less. I'm trying to remember that, as hard as it may be.

One of the things I've come to realize about mental health awareness is the way it often places the responsibility/blame around the affected. Talk to them, support, etc... But I did everything right, I did all the things they say to do. And still, it ended in the worst way it could have.
