there are lampposts everywhere for those with the eyes to see whatistherpg.com/theories.html
I saw this little guy and was immediately both enamored and horrified. That's how I know my raw instincts are onto something. I found that Hubert is actually a prominently featured character in the game Deitrus. Following my gut, I went and played Deitrus, but I was not prepared for the horrors that Hubert had in store for me. Now, I am not a licensed psychologist, but to my eye Hubert is a textbook case of an anti-social narcisstic psychopath. Actually, from my life experience, this depiction is so accurate and so uncanny, I can only conclude that this is a mirror of the actual developer; a self-insert even. This poor, heinous soul is probably so confused by their twisted mental state that they needed to create a digital doppelganger to truly see themselves as we do.

Now, why would a developer of this cash-grab remake have this Hubert fascination? I claim it is the same reason Hubert exists in the first place. Hubert draws in the criminally insane and the morally bankrupt and gives them an example to live by. Truly, truly evil stuff. I think this is clear evidence that there are horrible motives behind this remake, I just need to put myself in the shoes of these despicable fiends to find out what they're scheming.

in my current (non-game) project I am really abusing Python's annotation inspection to cram everything into a pydantic model (dataclass-ish) so as much as possible can be written, once, and never have to write any executable code for anything

Interesting linguistic/rhetorical weirdness here: this anti-nsfw announcement starts with "this site is for everyone", and then immediately pivots to describing a distinct class of person they want to discriminate against
Hey everyone,

MakerWorld is for everyone — creators, families, and yes, kids too. That means what shows up in browse, search, and recommendations should feel welcoming and safe for all of them. Lately, some of you have flagged that inappropriate content (NSFW and similar) is still slipping through.

Let's be clear: MakerWorld doesn't want or need this content to drive traffic. The issue isn't that we're turning a blind eye, it's that too many of these items are slipping past our current detection systems. We hear you, and we're already acting on it.

Thoughts on game achievements and if they can be done wrong? Found your site through Bluesky, absolutely love the design. Probably one of the best-looking websites I've seen.

hehe! I would hope my writing doesn't sound like AI output but I like em-dashes and can share some BTS. Normally when I have a dash it's "--" which gets converted to —. This is the same as a Compose Key sequence (look it up, highly recommend) – alt+-- on my keyboard types an em-dash directly.

frustrations with having overwhelming amounts of information to process and things that I need to explore
## The unsorted folder

An obvious approach is category-based triage.
Identify incoming todos as "to play", "to read", etc, and file them into queues that can be processed later.

The result of this is anything that can't be easily sorted into a category takes up inordinate time.
If something doesn't fit in a stack, it fits in front of the stacks, actively taking up cognitive and physical space until something is done about it.
The first thing to do before starting a new project is to clean up the old scraps, and so the impossibility of handling the old scraps prevents anything from getting done ever again.

It is yes, very possible to take clandestine videos with these glasses, no doubt

But if YouTube and TikTok can somehow figure out how to keep porn off their platforms, the glasses ought to be able to figure out what videos are shareable and what violate the safety of others

The tech industry has been essentially successful in misleading people about the stability and quality tech can offer and conditioning them to understand constant exploitation as the price of digitization. This has made people turn against digitization.

Let them eat block parties
In February, at the “Music Industry Summit” — the conclusion to San Francisco Music Week, another Lurie project — I watched as the mayor strode to the stage at the Swedish American Music Hall. There, before an audience of struggling artists, engineers, and small venue staff, he triumphantly reported that the last summer of concerts in Golden Gate Park resulted in “$150 million worth of economic impact,” and that, according to new data, “our independent music venues generate $1.4 billion in economic impact annually.”

Lurie paused for applause. “That’s because of all of you in this room.”

We clapped dutifully, but the people in that room did not need to be reassured that they had contributed to $1.4 billion in “economic impact.” They would have preferred to hear that any of their favorite clubs might exist next year. The people in that room could use health insurance — and they might be able to afford it if Lurie’s billionaire buddies were taxed appropriately; say, with a one-time 5% excise tax on net worth exceeding $1 billion to save Medi-Cal.

But hey, that sentiment doesn’t make for great social media content.

I do NOT "want to give AGs additional authority". Creating any new avenue for any kind of regulation over speech or prosthesis (which computers are!) is extremely dangerous and should be avoided. The value isn't that this regulation is itself good, it's that it acts as a buffer against much worse.
Political pressure for “child safety” is exploitable
But the lack of a perfect parental control system isn’t the main problem here. The real danger is the push for online identity verification using child safety as a justification.

Smart and privacy conscious people demand “No age verification” (quite reasonably!), but that doesn’t offer the quick fix people are looking for. More importantly, it doesn’t relieve the political pressure and so doesn’t take away the excuses of tyrants.

Normally “do nothing” would be the safest option here, but the danger of uninformed and reactionary voters means there is a great deal to gain by satisfying the concerns safely instead of letting the solution be evil. A technical standard for parents to somehow identify their children as children is the relief valve for dangerous political pressure. This doesn’t appease the fascists and censors. This doesn’t cede them any ground and it’d be wrong to try to; there’s no satisfying that hunger and it’s a dangerous mistake to feed it. What it does is actually improve the material conditions for the people they’re trying to trick.

I make a distinction between three things: the idea of age attestation in general, my specific design for OS-level age attestation, and the CA bill. Compared to my design I agree the CA bill is sloppy, overbroad, and abusable, and while I'm trying to contrast it with worse law I fault it for this
This is honestly very good. I am never going to say “this law is safe, it creates a system that can only do good” because bad prosecutors and bad courts can always destroy these things. This is enforced by the Attorney General, and an AG could abuse this language to target political enemies and enforce beyond the intended design. California is not good about this — see the age appropriate design code saga — but this particular piece is good. Good law is hard to find so we should make the most of what we get.Ambiguity in law is always dangerous. This is why I emphasize the outsized importance of the Attorney General, who is the enforcement agent for this. They shouldn’t be able to stretch the law to criminalize behavior the law didn’t intend to regulate. If edge cases can be argued to be in violation of this bill that gives ammunition for the government to pressure and prosecute arbitrarily. So yes, this should have been refined, and hopefully it still will be.

@ket.bsky.social Starting off, in (1-2) you talk about how the text of the CA law really only makes sense in the context of app stores and quickly breaks down when you remove that abstraction and talk about general-purpose computing. I focus on the OS side but the same problem exists for app stores
The biggest problem is the focus on the modern Apple-style “app store” model. Unlike the other two issues this isn’t the law causing a problem, it’s a failure in scope. App stores are the least relevant domain because they already have parental systems policing exactly this kind of behavior, as described in the overview earlier. Where this functionality is really missing is within apps and online, something the language here doesn’t touch. On general purpose computers, “app” is a useful fiction for describing and packaging behavior, and plenty of behavior falls outside that taxonomy.

What I see as the crucial missing piece here is a bridge between the signal the OS provides to app stores and the public internet. It’s not meaningful to just lock off certain apps from being installed at all. Programs and browsers need to be able to query this signal to tailor specific behavior within their programs. Are web browsers “application stores” under this language? Again, it’s not clear, and the lack of clarity makes it difficult for websites and browsers to treat this as authoritative. In both cases, the criticism is the one I’ve already made: the design of the law is only considering the app store model. It doesn’t handle the much more common (and much more important) case of general-purpose computers administered by adults that are in no way related with children or social media. It feels like an obvious cognitive error; the text of the bill was written by people who are primarily exposed to the surface-level consumerist tech environment. They’re failing to grapple with the technical implications because the underlying systems don’t’ match their mental model.

Of course, I agree with this objection. The California bill is over-inclusive with its definition of “operating system provider”, and it’s unclear how it handles normal software and general-purpose computing projects outside a walled-garden app store environment. It would be an improvement to see the definition of “operating system provider” narrowed to only capture the relevant, mainstream operating systems. Or widened, to clarify that users who install non-covered operating systems act as their own administrator and provider.

Like I said originally (in my post that's now almost impossible to find) this is incredibly serious business, and it's important that we fight age verification in a meaningful way. This thread is 1. wrong but 2. stenography for outrage bait from a neonazi violently anti-trans subculture.
