Proud of this review from a writer I admire, Nicole Eigener, author of Beguiled by Night & Citizen of Shadows. Devilry in Godling Wood: A Medieval Horror is out in 11 days! Goodreads link below.

This book is one that leaves me struggling for words to describe its grip. But I'll start with this: Coy Hall is the undisputed master of dark-age horror. And with its vast supernatural elements, Devilry in Godling Wood straddles the fence of horror and dark fantasy.

There are multitudes in this book. At its heart, it's a ghastly fairy tale. Between the pages, Coy deftly weaves a portrait of mundane life in a medieval hamlet and the unholy supernatural forces that thrive beyond what ordinary eyes can see. I read this book as if I were watching a film. The prose is beautiful and infused with poetry, and there were times when I had to remind myself that this was a book written in this century, not some godless forbidden tome of the deep, dark past.

The historic details are off the charts. You're in there, with these people: smelling what they smell, feeling their fear, their snatches of happiness, their disbelief at what is unfolding. The characters are so brilliantly written, and you'll find many to love as well as to hate.

If you’re fascinated by the lore of standing stones or intrigued by the idea of a silver-eared wandering minstrel, this story is for you. I don't want to say more about it because this is most definitely best gone into without specifics.

Make no mistake: this is most definitely a horror novel, even if you don't sense that in the early parts. There's creeping dread and things happen that will definitely make your gorge rise. But I also have to acknowledge that I appreciate Coy's ability to write love scenes. This was unexpected and I give him a tip of my hat for this. This book is by no sense of the definition a romance, but lovemaking is absolutely a quotient of human existence and there are some gorgeously written scenes. And some equally horrific ones, which were *utterly* shocking and, again, keep this book firmly rooted in horror.

A beautiful horror. One I will be thinking of for many days to come.

The cover of Devilry in Godling Wood features an original illustration. The image is of a man wearing a mask with three faces, wearing a monk's habit, and riding a chimerical animal, a mix of horse and pig.

First time seeing either Off the Reservation in the wild OR these B&N exclusives. Very cool. Signed em up. And the rest of the SGJ stuff. In Fairfax, I think? I see “12193” on the door. Anyway, this was a short walk from Chipotle. That being after I DoorDash’d some chipotle to the wrong hotel.

Off the Reservation and The Only Good Indians right beside each other on a shelf. Sprayed edges. Right by Paul Tremblay’s excellent new one, too. Best company.
