Let's just say the final session had some very silly combat strats, lol. I couldn't fathom what was happening but @meowmaritus.bsky.social figured it out!

This mod makes it so there's a 0.15% chance that any internal parameter in the game will be changed to "15". This breaks the game in surprising and very silly ways. Very happy to have today as an excuse to return to it, hope to see you there!

At 3:30 EST / 7:30 GMT (a little under 2 hours from now), I'll be revisiting the Dark Souls 15th Anniversary mod! I had a lot of fun playing this a couple weeks ago, but today is the 15th Anniversary of Dark Souls' release in the US, so today is the actual anniversary of when I first played it.

In contrast to my previous skeet, this was an OST collection done right; They're not just their old OSTs pressed to vinyl. Everything was lovingly re-recorded from original hardware, with incredible efforts put into modding consoles + cartridges to get the cleanest sound possible.

Now that Konami has their hands on the best-ever/ best-possible recordings of their soundtracks, I just hope they do something w/ these masters other than only go into this vinyl collection. If there's a future CD or download collection, I'm praying they use these versions and not their old ones.

It's a stark contrast to older OSTs of Castlevania music where they just dumped a ton of reverb on the music in post, and it came out a lot muddier and worse than necessary.

I think a lot of people don't realize the restorative efforts that went into this soundtrack collection, and it rules. A friend of mine re-recorded all of the classic chiptune soundtracks from original hardware, often modded hardware and cartridges to get the cleanest audio possible!

For me it's unrelated to gameplay stuff, it's issues with stuff like adding a bunch of reverb to the soundtracks in post, sampling from emulation instead of hardware at times, etc. Anyone recording a classic Castlevania soundtrack from hardware will get you a better version than Konami offers.

Melody Man seems to have a good number of the Wii tracks uploaded, but seemingly not the entire OST: www.youtube.com/playlist?lis... I'm not really active on twitter any more, but if you search my posts there for "Mega Man 9", you can find responses from Yu Shimoda and tssf weighing in!

(note that I'm not nitpicking subtle stuff like the slightly warmer/muddier sound you get sampling from hardware, I actually prefer the clarity of the OST in that aspect over the output of the Wii hardware. But I do wish the OST played the right sounds for its melodies)

It's not actually clear what the source of the problem is. Yu Shimoda himself said it was a glitch at first, but then speculated that maybe the OST was simply based on an unfinished version of the soundtrack, not matching the tweaking that went into the final version.

I have no idea how much bsky compression will hurt this comparison, but I just threw this together. The issue is that the OST often just plays 25% pulse waves when in-game it switches to 12.5%. Meaning, the wrong instrument or timbre is often playing. (credit to Melody Man on YT for Wii recording)

you never really see them side by side normally, unless you get gravelorded and then try to get them on even ground

Random Dark Souls observation: I somehow never noticed that the boulder Infested Barbarians are significantly larger than the club-wielding ones, lol. I think the large rock above their heads sorta dwarfs them in a way to make the difference less obvious, at least that seems to have happened to me.

I'm still not over the Mega Man 9 OST being a glitched export of the soundtrack, and every youtube upload of the music being from that version instead of the actual game. 😭

Sometimes I think about OSTs of game soundtracks that are worse than how they sound in-game. As a huge fan of classic VGM, I've always had a bit of a cold distance with regards to actually caring about published versions of soundtracks. Because I have trust issues with the quality/ thoroughness.

The direction they're facing. It, uh... the game doesn't directly use this for anything. The game *does* check something from that same initial spot its drawn from, but not in a way the capsule makes it look. I think it might've been a helpful visual reference for the devs in some niche cases.

It made the rounds during covid, to stress the importance of wearing masks. (some people couldn't fathom that masks could help at all if they couldn't guarantee stopping 100% of your breath from reaching someone else, when volume and distance of travel mattered)

Why is the Demon's Souls dialog bot better at this than the Dark Souls bot?? Its chances of saying something funny or dark seem much better. 😂

I'm debuting a new live stream series of nostalgic gaming selections. Basically a show and tell of the weird Amiga games I grew up. Right now I'm live with Lemmings 2! www.youtube.com/watch?v=tI-v... (more Elden Ring after this stream is done)

The Demon's Souls Dialog Bot has been way harsher than the Dark Souls bot, lol.
