Humor helps us connect—but it also reflects power. Who gets to be funny? Whose voices are dismissed? This month, IHSI is exploring gendered perceptions of humor in the workplace.
Graphic with orange transparent overlay; image of unknown comedienne performing
Resource spotlight:
Humor and power dynamicsHumor at work
Functional or disruptive?
In a 2019 study, researchers found that humor boosts men’s status—but can lower women’s, compared to coworkers who don’t use humor.

These perceptions can impact performance reviews and leadership potential—and even shape whether humor is viewed as “functional” or “disruptive.”A double-edged sword
Women may be perceived as less engaging and charismatic if they are not funny.

If they are funny (especially sarcastic, bold, or critical), women risk being seen as aggressive, unprofessional, or ‘too much’. Graphic includes a blue transparent overlay; image of Jodie Mitchell as themself and as their Drag King Person John Travulva. Text says:

“The more masculine presenting that I became as long as I didn’t mention being trans on stage, the less I got heckled, the more respect I had. But when I’m myself (out of drag) onstage, I still don’t have the same instant command of the room that John (Drag King persona) has.”
