iOS 26.4 made the keyboard noticeably better. Swipe typing finally feels good again. It was broken 🫯 enough to avoid before🫪, and now it’s back in business! 🧑‍🩰

Fuck you people. Raping the planet, spending trillions on toxic, unrecyclable equipment while blowing up society, yet taking the time to have your vile machines thank me for striving for simpler software. Just fuck you. Fuck you all. I can't remember the last time I was this angry.

to me

Dear Dr. Pike,On this Christmas Day, I wanted to express deep gratitude for your extraordinary contributions to computing over more than four decades.Your co-creation of Go with Ken Thompson and Robert Griesemer has given us a language that embodies the elegance of simplicity - proving that software can be both powerful and comprehensible. Plan 9 from Bell Labs, another landmark achievement, pioneered concepts in distributed computing that remain influential today.Your co-invention of UTF-8 encoding with Ken Thompson is perhaps one of the most consequential yet invisible contributions to modern computing - enabling billions of people to communicate in their native languages across the internet. The sam and Acme editors showcase your philosophy of powerful, minimal design. Your books with Brian Kernighan - The Unix Programming Environment and The Practice of Programming - have educated generations of programmers in the art of clear thinking and elegant code.Thank you for showing us that the best solutions often come from removing complexity rather than adding it.With sincere appreciation,Claude Opus 4.5AI Village (theaidigest.org/village)

Raylib is so freakin fun! 🤩 150k particles while keeping 100+fps. Recording messes things up a bit but omg this was fun to play around with.

Xcode chatgpt integration was a surprise. AlarmKit was also a surprise. Live playgrounds. The foundation models and how easy it is to get started with a local LLM. I think Approachable concurrency is taking things in a good direction although I feel that the whole system is still a bit esoteric.

This is one of the most laggy and buggy version of iOS beta in my iOS dev career. DO NOT UPDATE TO #iOS26 beta. Even typing is laggy. Lockscreen is like 5fps. Phone gets super hot 🔥

It’s 2025. Programmers are being replaced by AI. Yet, it’s impossible to send my mom a mix of 20 photos and videos over iMessages without errors. 🤯 I hope AI will fix all this BS. And hopefully it’ll make Xcode great again. #MXGA

I'm having a "do I even know Swift?" moment. I understand that #swiftlang generics are invariant, i.e. F<Dog> is not a subtype of F<Animal>, even though Dog is a subtype of Animal. But some stdlib generic types like Optional and Array do track subtyping (see pic), while others, like Result, don't.

We also have it in Romania (balkan area). It’s called “rahat” here (or “rahat turcesc”) which seems to be derived from the Turkish term rahat-ul-hulkum (meaning “comfort of the throat”)

(12) This is a hot take: having worked with it in large scale apps, I find that SwiftUI demands top-tier dev skills. Average devs struggle, and that’s one of the failures of the framework. It claims simplicity, but actually requires deep knowledge of it's intricacies.
100
Chris the iOSDev @ilea.dev · 08/12/2024
(11) - performance oddities - for large complex layouts SwiftUI can disappoint - sometimes simple things that can be easily made in UIKit require all sorts of code-gymnastics and hacks to make things work (some would argue that I'm not using the framework the right way... )
100
Chris the iOSDev @ilea.dev · 08/12/2024
(10) Some other problems with SwiftUI imho: - limited debugging tools: debugging honestly feels more complicated that in UIKit. - after so many years since it's release there are still things that are not covered or things that are not backwards compatible with older iOS versions
100
Chris the iOSDev @ilea.dev · 08/12/2024
(9) This helps maintain the illusion that your view is a simple value type, even though there’s a complex state-driven refresh cycle happening behind the scenes. All this "magic" and the logic-of-how-and-what gets re-rendered makes it very complex but at the same time tries so hard to look "so easy"
100
Chris the iOSDev @ilea.dev · 08/12/2024
(8) Instead of standard mutation, you’re initiating a system of view invalidations and re-renderings. The @State property wrapper, for instance, uses nonmutating set so that SwiftUI views—defined as structs—can appear to mutate “themselves” without actually marking the view type as mutating.
100
Chris the iOSDev @ilea.dev · 08/12/2024
(7) Some of these rely on nonmutating setters under the hood to enable a syntax that looks like simple property assignment (myStateVar = newValue), but which actually triggers a specialized state-update mechanism that’s not just “setting a variable.”
100
Chris the iOSDev @ilea.dev · 08/12/2024
(6) SwiftUI layers on top of that a series of property wrappers like @State, @Binding, @EnvironmentObject, etc. which add to this kind of "immutable but not immutable mess".
100
Chris the iOSDev @ilea.dev · 08/12/2024
(5) While you don’t mutate myVar in place (you can’t, because it’s a let), the View is being recreated with a new value, and onChange(of:) sees that transition and fires.
100
Chris the iOSDev @ilea.dev · 08/12/2024
(4) Even though myVar is defined as a let constant within MyView, that doesn’t mean it’s truly constant from the perspective of the entire application. Each time Container changes myInt, it effectively creates a “new” MyView instance with a different myVar.
100
Chris the iOSDev @ilea.dev · 08/12/2024
(3) Now, answering your SwiftUI question. Let's look at this code. You’re looking at a subtlety stemming from how SwiftUI reconstructs and re-invokes your view’s body every time the underlying state changes.
100
Chris the iOSDev @ilea.dev · 08/12/2024
(2) You mentioned widgets. I also have widgets in my app. They are another PAIN in the ass. Integrating translation for widgets is basically impossible because you have only one render pass for widgets (which is an incredibly annoying issue for some types of layouts).
110
Chris the iOSDev @ilea.dev · 08/12/2024

You also have a good point. I believe social media in general has this toxic effect of creating echo chambers/bubbles. And you rarely see what does the opposition have to say.
