Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai was almost transliterated into Magnificent Seven, inspired A Bug’s Life and Galaxy Quest. The latter two and Three Amigos take it a step further: these aren’t heroes, they’re people who portray heroes. Are there other films that have this particular plot? What trope is this?

Since discovering this last year, have listened to it three times. Cannot get over how fantastic the book and @marawilson.bsky.social's reading is. My absolute favorite audio performance. #TheFacelessOldWomanWhoSecretlyLivesinYourHome

People want Alex Garland and Paul Thomas Anderson to be able to explain things but their failure is that they’re kind of smart. If you want to explain 2026 you needed to give 200 cans of Mountain Dew to Uwe Boll in 2007 and instruct him to direct an adaptation of Catch 22 but not to read it first

To this day “have you met men?” Is a frequent reference among our friends and family.

My spouse said “Have you met men?” All three of them quickly guessed it was true, which was the right answer. Turns out it was even worse than true: The leader abandoned the other bikers in the middle of the trek, and was eventually found at a bar, having drinks with two women he’d met on the trail.

My spouse was on a game show; they were guessing the truth of guests’ story… Ranger Sharon’s story was that a guy ranger leading a bike tour stalled twenty or so tourists to flirt with some women. While reasoning it out, another contestant said “I just don’t know that a park ranger would do that…”

I’m a guy. I absolutely get it. Men are frequently terrible. “Not all men tho” people are basically saying “I know that bakery got an F from the board of health, but I didn’t get rat turds in one sandwich one time, so I don’t think the reputation is deserved. Now let me tell you about crypto coin…”

Strait of Hormuz standoff puts supply of America's generic drug prescriptions at risk
Half of US generic drugs are made in India and transit the Strait of Hormuz. Supply chains prepare for emergencies, but prescription stockpiles are limited.

I was so lucky a counselor heard me singing Particle Man at camp and sent me a tape with both their Lincoln and eponymous albums. I played it to death, and am still a massive fan.

I think my first album on tape was Paul Simon - Rhythm of the Saints, which I loved so much I bought another copy to start my new collection of cassettes.

I’ve accidentally bullied people. As someone who was bullied so much when I was young, it’s hard to realize that I can and I have, even between friends. It’s an invaluable lesson.

I very frequently send my friends The Word of the Day, @grandiloquentwords.bsky.social . It’s always “butts”, or something very near (“buts” has made an appearance). There are an unexpectedly high number of definitions. I’ve kept deeply ridiculous joke going, and I wonder if it brings you some joy.

I see a parallel… In the mid-2010s, there was a sewage backup of phone games with the same mechanic: “upgrading a thing will cost you X real time, but you can click a button to spend real money and skip that.” AI is just this stupid, malicious button in real life. Click it to skip building yourself.

My most recent epiphany about AI. Around 2017, I started immediately uninstalling any game that had a tutorial step where you spend a Special In Game Currency to skip a Real World Currency: time. This has served me. LLMs are the exact same system, but in real life, to cost you more money for speed.

When you hear them target any vulnerable community—immigrants, trans people, refugees—ask first why they're trying to distract and divide us. Don't fall for it.
Screenshot of an X post by HasanAbi commenting on how to discuss trans issues with median voters. The post quotes Marco Foster, who says the anti-trans campaign in Maine is funded by an out-of-state billionaire to distract from tax discussions and notes that very few trans kids compete in high school sports there. Below is a podcast-style video still of a man speaking into a microphone.

It was the impression of the 1950s children obtained through television and their parents taking care of everything and hiding problems. Of course the world seemed great, Granddad, you weren’t in Korea. You aren’t Hawaiian, Puerto Rican, or a minority on the mainland. You think America was Mayberry.

I’m not sure what caused it; as a member of a family who used to shop there a lot, we haven’t been back since late ‘24. I think a lot of LGBTQIA folks shopped there. DEI is important. Target showed they never meant any of it; we’ll never shop there again, even if they have a Big Ol’ Change of Heart.

Or, perhaps this was all a bridge too far, even for the demographic you’re discussing. I think it’s possible a lot of “I’m not racist, but…” and “center” Americans are finding the government is stringing razor wire across the top of the fence they’ve been astride and they have to pick where to land.

I may have a visceral understanding. I came home ten years ago, to find that my fiancée had left to move in with their dealer and have a kid essentially because I wouldn’t buy them a puppy. There’s more to it, but I’ve never felt so utterly like my organs had been pulled out. Things have improved.

The @washingtonpost.com understands “Democracy Dies In Darkness”; someone else is holding democracy’s head under until the bubbles stop, but WaPo is pinning its legs. A malicious void of integrities journalistic and human. I’d rather house train a dog on the floors than let their ink stain my rugs.
