I have a blank book that I put sticker in. I DO put stickers on a lot of my stuff, so I sometimes buy two of ones I really like; one to use, and one for the book.

#FindsFriday Alert and sparky, a 4th C BC red-figured rhyton in the form of a horse's head. From tomb in ancient pre-Roman Peucetian city of Thuriae, one of the largest in Puglia. Excavated 1957, in Monte Sannace displays in Gioia del Colle museum.
A drinking vessel in the shape of a horse's head with a cup-shaped behind it at one end to the left.
It has a handle shown on the bottom of the the cup-shaped section of the vessel, with the head pointed downwards to the right at an angle. Mostly glazed in black, the cup has red-figured warriors with white spears and headbands, and red decoration running round the top and the intersection with the head. The horse has a thin bridle in a yellow-gold colour, a wide open red eye and ears standing up slightly forward.

He was a brilliant man and an incredible animator. I got the chance to take his seminar, which eventually became his book, and even after 10 years as a working animator, I still learned a lot from him.

Unlike cheap internet access or 3G phones (the true drivers of the 90s/2000s explosion) consumer AI is a means with no end. You can't sell that to consumers. Only to businesses that misunderstand the relationship between technology and profits/cost-savings. Because to them, it's magic beans.

I had to use an app to ride a bus ONCE, and it kept pestering me to upgrade to a pro subscription. I deleted the app and got email spam. This is Hell, nor are we out of it.

what a fantastic all-timer thread on this phenomena and the psychology behind it I think about this all the time and not understanding this is the difference between successful liminal horror, and just horrorslop. liminal horror is about the baked-in hostility of public spaces we millenials saw die

No offence, but I'd rather eat a plague-rat souffle. I love the show, I get a kick out of watching it. I can't see any way in which amateur opinions would increase my enjoyment of the show, and I know for sure many, many ways in which they would objectively decrease my happiness in general.

I hope that's what 90% of people do. But it's the toxic 10% that everyone hears from.

This problem existed long before SocMed, but its influence was fairly meager and limited to letter-writing campaigns, focus groups, and test audiences.

Anything that IS valid, polite, and helpful is buried under a flood of ignorant and mean-spirited opinion-vomit. It's better not to wade into that toxic ocean for the few nice bits that MIGHT be floating around.

I honestly believe that creatives listening to or (ghod forbid) searching out fan reactions are doing everyone a huge disservice. Even polite and well-intentioned fan "suggestions" are absolutely toxic. Art and stories should not be loud-mouth democratized. Follow YOUR vision!

Just a variation on the "Meet me halfway" trick. Nope. When someone espouses an outright evil and damaging philosophy there is no halfway. I KNOW our differences, that's why I don't want to be in the same room with people like this and wish them nothing but failure and destitution.

Part of my enjoyment of shows is to take them apart; figure out the reasons for certain choices; try to predict what's going to go on later; and yes, write about my most/least favorite writers. Stuff I would NEVER send to the staff! Damn. Never read the comments, never listen to the fans!

Usually the showrunner, and above them the EP. When shows start making you want to write letters, the best response is to stop watching them.

St Lucy’s goggly eyes can’t believe it either.
We are looking at a close up of an oil painting of St Lucy. She is holding a pewter cake stand with two eye balls on it. They are surprised as anyone that they are on a cake stand.

There's Calico near Barstow, California. It _is_ a tourist attraction, but has lots of historic buildings and artifacts.

Yeah, Bodie is great, but it's a ghost town, not a living history place. Terrific if you really want to know what the buildings were like, though.

Tombstone is a good example. It became a tourist town thanks to "dime novels" back when the Earps were still there. Also, just over the crest of the mountains, there's Bisby which has a section that has been well-preserved. Both had tacked-on touristy bits... "Boot Hill" is notoriously awful.

MBA "expertise" strikes again. The exhibition was designed to make money, not to allow people to view and enjoy the tapestry in a comfortable, unhurried way. Since stealing artifacts is looked down on nowadays, the museum seems to have decided to steal people's time and money instead.
