I've been doing quick #pleinaire #casein sketches while waiting to pick up the kid from school and this last time I had a few brush strokes where I felt I was learning something. I do hope this schedule works out and I can keep practicing.
A casein sketch of a cluster of trees along the edge of the water under a bright yet overcast sky. Predominate colors are subdued warm and cool greens representing a variety of vegetation. The water is slightly rosey for some reason.

Here's another bit of #casein practice from a couple of weeks ago, before life got too busy. This one is from a hike I did with family in the cascades.
A sketchy casein painting of a glacier fed river in the cascades. The view is from above, looking down. The river is bright with reflected sunlight, surrounded by steep, moss-covered cliffs. vegetation fills the left side cliffs. A gangly fallen tree intrudes from the left as it hangs over the river.

I've not had proper time nor space to do much art lately, but I'm still trying to hold on to that lifeline of art-making.

More #penandink practice. This time, I wanted to try and capture this house in my neighborhood since I liked it. But after feeling like I messed up the wall with the roses and the stairs, I thought I'd try a couple more attempts just to see what I could learn before my fingers went numb.

I'm working on #penandink and while I enjoy it, it's work! I drew this local tree twice because I didn't feel I got the light right. I'm still trying to find the right mix of line technique, density, and direction to convey what I want.

It spreads its gnarled branches wide amongst dry brown grasses. The undulations of an evergreen create an upside down cathedral holding up a canopy of green against a gray sky. More #Casein practice of a tree in my neighborhood:
A painting of a wide-trunked tree with with a canopy of wildly winding branches spreading out to cover the top half of the frame. The canopy is filled with a mix of bright green and yellow leaves and pink flowers intermittently shining with sunlight or enveloped in shade. Below the tree is a busy mess of foliage in cooler greens. A mossy, messy sidewalk angles up from the bottom mid-left to the right middle of the frame. In the distance, on the right sits a jumble of garbage bins.

I'm still taking time to muck about with #casein #painting when I get time. The most time I seem to get is an hour in the morning before the family wakes up. Right now, I'm trying to just sketch, not worry about errors and get some quick, thoughtful practice in as I learn how to use this medium.

He seems very relaxed.A sketchy painting of a telephone pole on a neighborhood street corner surrounded by plants. I was finally blessed with my copy of "Carved in Stone: A Storyteller's Guide to the Picts". It's a beautiful, well researched and written book that the @stoutstoat.co.uk team worked incredibly hard to complete. Thank you!
The wonderfully illustrated cover to "Carved in Stone: A Storyteller's Guide to the Picts". in a horizontal stripe going from left to right, there is a painted image of a forest between a lake and waterfall. In the landbridge between the two, a row of ancient picts travel with their belongings. Along the top and bottom of the book run stripes of intricate patterns.A page from the book "Carved in Stone" which talks about "Writing in Ogham". There are five illustrated examples of different types of ogham writing, from a simple form on bark and stone, to a straight line version on wood and maybe bone? to another kind that is more intricate. Another lovely illustrated page from "Carved in Stone" which talks about "Resting". From being caught out in the elements, to camping, ruins, wayhouses, homesteads, and inns and monestaries. A page from "Carved in Stone" filled with great little illustrations about the different skills and responsibilities a pict might have. From Cooking to boatbuilding, to fishing and more.

I took a lovely walk around the lake at dawn this morning. However, it's been so long since I last did that, I had forgotten that it was not 3 miles around, it was 6! So, I had to run the last mile with my backpack and up the hills of Fremont to make it to a meeting with one minute to spare. PHEW!

This morning's #casein practice #painting was chosen by my kid who wanted something more complicated, so here it is! Finding the right dark colors without using black or getting too many whites in my darks took some discipline. I hope I got close, though I know there are things I'd fix.

Another morning #casein #painting practice. This time, Looking Away From a Lighthouse in Oregon. I've not really done water all that much, so this is something I should work at more often. I feel I could have added more color to this one.
A bit of ocean scenery. Grayish clouds above a grayish ocean. A circle created by the shoreline and some stones that rise above the water surround a central pillar. In the foreground grass complements the curve.
overall, this one feels a bit washed out, but it's practice.

Going through my photo roll of previous hikes to get some #casein #painting practice in while the weather isn't great and my time is short.
A chunky, boulder rests on a grass covered hill. There are small rocks to the left and a large mound on the right from which the boulder fell out of a long time ago. A small evergreen tree sits to the right of the boulder. In the distance there are trees and hill, and a river seems to carve its way through the landscape behind all of that. The front part of the scene is dark with shadow.A large stump that suggests a rough hewn throne sits atop a small hill, surrounded by trees. everything is in shadow, except for the bright yellow green canopy of the trees in the upper half of the painting. A bright blue sky peaks through the canopy. I'm trying to get comfortable painting again but I'm still feeling very clumsy with my brush marks. Still, this is good practice.

I've been enjoying practicing #painting in #casein with a limited palette by doing 1 hour sketches in the morning before everyone wakes up. The brown paper I'm using pushes me toward an oil-like, opaque approach, but I'm going to keep trying transparent as well.

I had a meeting today where my role was passive, so I spent the time doing a quick 20 minute study of a photo I took this morning on a walk. I'm still trying to get used to casein. It dries and changes color and value in ways I'm not able to predict yet.
A small, 3x3 casein sketch of a street at dawn. A van sits on the right, near the front of the painting, road stretching into the distance where it is met with a dark wall of trees. There is a fence on the left under more trees. Wires criss cross the sky between telephone poles. It's a middling effort, and lighter than intended, but I'm working on it.

I'm trying to learn how to use #casein so I'm doing little value studies. The thing that is killing me right now is how to blend gracefully between transparent and opaque use of the medium. It just dramatically shifts the hue and really dries way differently (darker/lighter) than it was when wet.
A 3x3 grid of black and white studies of landscapes in casein paint. From the top left 1. A scene of a tall canyon wall at the base of which are tiny little dots representing dudes on horses. 2. A night scene where the moon shines through shadowy trees. 3. rounded hills rising above a still lake. 4. A wyeth painting that until I painted this, I didn't realize was of a butchered cow carcass in front of an old barn. sheesh. 5. A mountain hillside covered in rocks I failed to render coherently. At the top, a small badly drawn cabin ... exists. 6. Dramatic mountains rise above a confusing lakeshore, done in a weird fashion in opaque use of casein. This dried much darker than expected. 7. a cliff lined seashore with waves crashing... meh . 8. An all too light rendering of a park originally painted by Monet. 9. A brightly lit lake and some low hills seen through a cover of trees and bushes.

Here are the only birds I've got. They were done up for a DnD campaign I ran my family through a few years ago. We played the whole Tyranny of Dragons campaign, but set in the world of Humblewood, so I had to recast all of the characters into animal people.
A humanoid rooster with evil yellow eyes, orange feathers, and a red cock's comb wears purple robes decorated with gold. On his shoulders sits a small pseudodragon. This image is modeled after D&D's image of Severin from the Tiamat campaign. A humanoid Owl drawn in pen and ink style who wields a cutlass in front of his face as he stands ready to duel a foe, wears a devilish mask over his eyes, and a robe over his shoulders.A psychotic small round birb boy who's feathers are black and white wears druid clothes, a tall pointy green hat with gold embroidery in the shape of a tree on it. Leaves and vines decorate seem to be growing out of his hat as well. He holds a staff with a skull on it and wields a sickle in his other hand. On his back can be seen a cross bow. A humanoid bird with extremely fancy neck wattle in bright red and blue holds a pointy mace in one hand and green sparky magic in the other. He is wearing intricate robes.
