It cannot be acceptable, he says, that in the UK only 1 in 5 workers are members of a trade union, and only 1 in 4 is covered by a collective agreement. These are the second worst numbers in Europe, that we cannot go on without addressing properly.

We need to re-empower our trade unions, one of the great examples of workers not being able to walk out in solidarity is the shame of what happened in the P&O Ferries scandal. Legislation giving you a half-baked right not to be dismissed doesn't work on its own he says.

Professor Keith Ewing closes our panel this evening. Alongside problems with the Act's approach to collective bargaining, he adds that the reforms to recognition procedure will not be enough, as it encourages, facilitates and enables employer resistance to recognition claims.

Even if the ERA is fully implemented with no dilutions, the UK will still have trade union law that falls short of our international standards. For example workers should ahve the right to take secondary action with workers in other sectors. #TUC2026
