if i had to assign these 4 different areas of pentacost, spider would be sat 5, bunny would be sat 3, pterosaur would be sat 4, and the croc would be sat 1. shiloh doesn't have an area because they didn't grow up in pentacost, just the larger metropolitan area.

--which makes the fact that they never bring it up to jessie salient. as sam became more deeply obsessed with jessie, it started causing issues with their mother. their detachment from their family due to their infatuation with jessie is alluded to here.

it'll really suck if it does get cut, because it has one of my favorite jokes in it.

that blast radius is suthpen. suthpen is controlled by the largest (but not richest) city on their planet, graduation. graduation leveled multiple parts of the mountain ranges cupping their continent for access to water. so there are definitely people NEAR those mountains...

the red building with the rainbow sign in this panel is, in fact, a casino, one of two or three within a kilometer of where shiloh lives. they aren't littering the city, it's just that shiloh lives close to "gay street" -- an area historically specialized in adult entertainment.

more added to the glossary as i remembered them.
pollinator dog -- specially bred, tiny dogs with 6 legs and wings used to pollinate flowers as a replacement for the anthropomorphization of pollinator animals.
lepidog -- a butterfly dog. portmanteau of "lepidopteran" and "dog."
butterdog -- another term for butterfly dogs.
vespidog -- a bee or wasp dog. a portmanteu of of "vespidae" and "dog," despite the fact that most vespidogs are bees. vespidogs cannot sting, but they are prone to biting.Printer Running Out [of ink], the -- an alternate accepted theory of how Idletry's universe will end, where the source of tinctures will run out and all forces in the universe will simply cease to exist. based erroneously on observations of ink fading over time.
drying out, drying up -- another way to refer to the Printer Running Out.
Standing Up -- a prehistorical event where most animals capable of doing so became anthropomorphic in a Covenant.
Covenant, the -- a set of biological imperatives and standardizations animals underwent in exchange for sapience, such as the ability to stand upright and speak, a shared measurement system and language, boneless external penises and 9-month internal pregnancies, omnivorous metabolisms, and the capacity to understand and commit evil.
Sitting Down -- a contemporary event where certain animals rejected the Covenant to Stand Up by complying with a separate Covenant wherein they are subordinate to Stood Up animals, but are incapable of committing evil or feeling any of the social moral compulsions that Stood Up animals do. Sat Down animals are domesticated animals, such as livestock and pets. they are sapient like Stood Up animals, but have an entirely different set of instincts and priorities to anthropomorphized animals. wild, non-domesticated animals do not exist and are a foreign concept to characters in Idletry. Stood Up animals are compelled to care and provide for Sat Down animals.123 -- the emergency telephone number of Idletry, standardized across all of Centrus. every province has their own call centers, but they can reroute a call for help to a more appropriate province if needed.Pentacost -- a coastal conurbation which was previously 5 separate territories fighting over resources. this is the city Shiloh lives in.

here. i'm not retyping all that--
I'm on mobile but fiction is kind of just a vector for fantasies
Idletry uses fantasy instead of fiction because it focuses on, thematically, loneliness and power fantasies to abet that loneliness
A mass shooting for example, starts as a fantasy in someone's head before it becomes a tragedy, and I've mentioned before that Jessie's psychology was initially profiled based on school shooters who want revenge on their peers for being outcasts
In this way the entire story can be interpreted as just a power fantasy in Jessie's head, which the story isn't shy about letting the reader know up front
Whenever a character deviates from what she wants it's like a stray intrusive thought betraying her already wounded psyche to her
Yet she can't replicate the sensation of real connection in the fantasy, she can't make real friends or simulate real love from her fake girlfriend
Committal as a story which has to function in a different framework uses fiction as a vector to communicate fantasy, and because Legend can't communicate this fantasy with fiction because she can't write, she communicates it with what amounts to magic in their world used to force your personal reality onto othersYou could think that Legend can hire someone else to write out her fantasies for her, but it fails to capture the complex array of self-moderation at play when someone writes their own work, and the basis of her problem is being unable to communicate her fantasies
Also pegging is going to quickly rip her a fourth one by pointing out that she is swapping definitions here with an ambiguous middle term like fantasy in her thesis--
As a note, this is also why Jessie rewinds time a lot — sometimes the fantasy goes in a direction you don't like, so you just play it out again for your dopamine hit or whatever
Fantasies are notorious for voluntarily playing in people's heads over and over
It is not really a quality of fiction so much as personal fantasizingIn general I gave Jessie fantasies that I think are common for people (besides having money because who needs money when you have omnipotence), sex, power, and punitive justice being the top 3
Things that you can't really explore in real life, so you turn to fantasy, if your want for them is bad enough
That's also why bdsm becomes more prominent through the story, it is supposed to be a fantasy that becomes more and more extreme as it becomes less and less like something you would want to try in real life
It is of course also asking the reader if fantasizing about terrible things is bad, how far can you fantasize until it makes you a bad person, how much do you have to read about it before it makes you a bad person, when do the fantasies you pursue start reflecting who you are, etc.
I always point to the comic where Jessie is profusely throwing up from one medication she's stuck taking for at least a month, I think she really associates the act with one of the worst points of her life"Many people live out a fantasy in the bedroom or on paper and they're satiated as long as it's done every once in a while[...]
Because they're looking for a specific experience
Jessie is trying to fill an emptiness in her with an unreality that doesn't exist[...]
It's not ever going to make her less lonely or feel less hurt by what's already happened, so she keeps escalating"

She is, in fact, capable of seeing that people treat her differently when she has power. She can tell that people only speak to her because she can give them things that they want, or do things to them that they don't want. I dare say it is integral to her pervasive sense of isolation.
Shiloh: ...Jessie,
Jessie: heyyy, it's not 'God' for once! I like it.
Shiloh: —..yeah. I know that I've asked a lot of questions about your powers— and I still have a lot more. A lot more...
Jessie: right...
Shiloh: —but that can come off like it's the only thing I care about. And-
Jessie: yeah. It can. [walking in front of them, turning backwards to look at them while walking] but who can blame you, honestly? I mean, it's what I've got going for me. What else are you supposed to give a shit about? Who I was before I was a God?Shiloh: I suppose it's different. Maybe fundamentally. // I'm sorry. I think there's always this little voice in the back of my head that can't stop.. Appreciating, that you can erase my entire existence any time you want to.
Jessie (obviously emotionally wounded): but. I wouldn't DO that.
Shiloh: sure..
Jessie: I don't want you to just think of me as God. I'm God to everyone... I wanna be Jessie to you.
