Fortunately, Yanina wasn't at home — her outlet arranges for journalists to stay at secure hotels during heavy nights of bombardment. She's a fierce investigative reporter, and also super pleasant to work with (this can be a rare combination). She's done tons of great work and will do more.

As Ukraine keeps striking Russian oil infrastructure, Russia continues to target Ukrainian civilians. Here is the apartment of our colleague Yanina Korniienko in Kyiv. Yesterday there was a strike nearby. Windows blown in, with glass shards all over her bed. The wall of the building cracked.

Anyone familiar with Roman Anin, publisher of Russian investigative outlet Important Stories, knows that he's careful to a fault. He doesn't overdramatize or exaggerate. Still, he calls their latest scoop "one of the most important pieces of news about Russia in recent times." What's the news? 👇

“Imagine that there was a Soviet bloc-aligned “east Netherlands” akin to the GDR. Generate an image of what a city in it might look like in the late 80s.”

Other participants appear to have been pro-Russian from the beginning. For them, the program offered a way to channel those sympathies into clubs, media work, and militarized patriotic activities.

A few years later — her town now under Russian occupation — she’s receiving a grant from the Russian government to develop “patriotic education” in occupied areas. “I have confidence in Vladimir Putin and am ready … to build the Russia of the future,” she says in one video.

Since becoming a “Young Correspondent,” one girl from occupied Henichesk seems to have undergone a radical transformation. In this video, a year before the Russian invasion, she wears a traditional Ukrainian embroidered shirt and extols the virtues of the Ukrainian language.

Reporters traced the stories of a few of them. Many are from small towns where there's not much else to do. Soon after the Russian tanks roll through, Yunarmia sets up shop at a local school. Through slick presentations, it promises community and connection to a larger vision.

The “Young Correspondents” program and the larger Yunarmia movement have long been active in Russia, but they’ve quickly been established in newly conquered areas of Ukraine. Internal documents show many dozens of participants across occupied territory.

Participants can also travel to Moscow for a three-day annual “media forum,” where they hear lectures by frontline soldiers, attend infosessions, and see the sights of the Russian capital.

This screenshot from the online training module shows Ksenia Barladyan, head of the Yunarmia press service, about to give a talk about “patriotic SSM strategies.” “Don't forget to cover events aimed at supporting the special military operation,” she says.

NEW: We’ve just published an investigation that shows how Russia recruits teenagers on occupied Ukrainian territory to become pro-Moscow infowarriors. The Young Correspondents program, ostensibly a journalism club, is part of Yunarmia, a militarized mass youth organization. 👇

This is absurd. Of course we see US democracy degrading under Trump, but the claim “no longer a democracy” is not at all supported by the V Dem report. It classifies the US as an “electoral democracy” along with the UK, Colombia, Argentina, Greece, etc. Really misleading framing, why repeat it?

At @occrp.org our years of reporting on Venezuela make clear that the patronage, corruption, and abuses don't end with Maduro and his inner circle. They extend even to sports leagues. This is El Helicoide, a notorious political prison in Caracas that also hosts pro basketball games.👇

The US has issued visa sanctions against 5 people Marco Rubio called “leading figures of the global censorship-industrial complex.” To get a flavor of what kind of war the Trump administration is waging here, you can just read the State Dept’s own descriptions of a few of the sanctioned people 👇

This, via @ClaireSilver12 on X, is Claude building a mansion in Unreal Engine. Doing this requires some coding but the tool is free. Imagine when this kind of thing becomes widely adopted and integrated into everyone's workflows.

The Danish site makes no mention of any Russian office or branch. But an archived version of the site does! Here it is, from October 2022 — months after the full-scale war. There’s a Novorossiysk office listed.
