the more nuanced version of this is that i think fighting games are more fun when there are many vectors of improvement that you can use to skillgap someone before things get boiled down to a straight up guessing game. so to remove the nuance again basically i think david sirlin ruined the genre.

i actually have so many fucking words to say about this lmao so we're doing screenshots instead of a thread short answer is imagine if xrd YRC wasn't really frustrating on the defender side but was still strong and fun to use. and also made combos cooler.

longer answer is that it's kind of the fact that it's limiting that makes them sick, i guess? because you can't use them on everything all the time and there's a lot of strong ways to spend meter in +R it's very rare that you 100% *need* to know an FRC for a character to function and it's even rarer for said FRC to be especially difficult, so they're kind of an optional mechanic that you don't need to engage with when you're learning. it adds layers to a character's kit that you can engage with at your own pace. them being tied to specific moves means that those moves gain depth that you don't see with RC in the later games because YRC and drift RRC and shit are *so strong* that you want to get the most out of them.

because like that's the thing, RC mechanics in later guilty gears are like. they're objectively much stronger but they're stronger in a way that makes them less versatile? for one you just, straight up cannot use YRC for combos in xrd. like that's how the mechanic works. but outside of that i find the time slow effect on RCs in xrd and strive to be really overbearing and centralizing in terms of what you do as the attacker, and frustrating and disempowering as the defender. the only thing that FRC and RC do in +R is cancel your move, and outside of like the very strongest FRCs like gunflame and exe beast and such you usually aren't getting so much blockstun on them that you get a guaranteed strong offensive position for doing the move with the right positioning. in xrd if i as an i-no player do HCL YRC from roughly roundstart distance and they're standing, i airdash and get a mixup. no questions. and there's a lot of moves like that that just let you force your way in because of how much the time slow skews your frame data. in +R, my strongest way to turn 25 meter into a turn as i-no with FRC is like, air note frc into immediate dive? which is much more finicky screen position wise, has a good amount of startup, and just generally has more moving parts which can go wrong. it's still really good, but i need to think about it's application more and it's not my automatic go-to when i have mid-game amounts of meter and i find myself at the right spacing. (hcl 6frc6 is also good but most characters can 6P you for trying if they think you're gonna pull the trigger on it. but you might not and it's really hard to react, so it's something of a mindgame instead of a guaranteed turn.)

finally i just find it preferable when there's stuff in a game that people can't hit 100% of the time. it's cool when someone goes for something hard and hits it. it's even cooler when they can hit it consistently. there's still mechanics like this in modern games, like strive IB and sf6 perfect parry are 2f windows, but they're all defensive in nature. and like, idk i just prefer to put the burden of execution on the aggressor, i think. i think defense in fighting games is hard enough as is, and personally i find rough defensive situations i need to do some esoteric bullshit to escape more palatable when i know my opponent is working just as hard to get me there.

that was ramble-y but i guess to summarize, i like FRCs because their power budget is a lot vaguer and generally lower, which means to make them as useful as your other metered tools you need to be skillful and creative. they enhance a character's kit and add a lot of depth without demanding attention, and they tend to make situations more complicated rather than less.
