NEWS DIGEST | Bonn Climate Talks

Last week, UN climate talks in Bonn ended with major issues still unresolved ahead of COP31.

Negotiators failed to reach agreement on key areas including adaptation finance, emissions-cutting work, and how climate science should guide decisions. Climate Home News described the talks as ending in ‘gridlock’.

The divide is familiar but urgent: developing countries are calling for stronger finance to adapt to climate impacts, while wealthier countries continue to push emissions-cutting negotiations.

One area did move to the center of the conversation: electrification. Turkey and Australia pushed for a target of 35% of final energy use to come from electricity by 2035. This was one aspect of practical direction in an otherwise stalled negotiation.

The talks at Bonn show that action is no longer dependent on whether governments are willing to set climate goals, but whether they will deliver them.

NEWS DIGEST | Red List of Threatened Species The latest update lists 49,505 threatened species – from deep-sea vents to desert dunes. A snapshot of biodiversity under pressure, and what's still possible. 🌊🐸 @environment.theguardian.com @reuters.com @sscmarine.bsky.social #ClimateAction #EcoNews
The latest IUCN Red List update shows biodiversity under growing pressure across land and the deep ocean.

The update now lists 49,505 threatened species out of 175,909 assessed. It also highlights the human activities driving biodiversity loss, including mining, habitat destruction, infrastructure development, trade, and resource extraction.

In the deep sea, 62% of mollusc species living around hydrothermal vents are now considered at risk, largely because of potential deep-sea mining. On land, the desert rain frog is now listed as vulnerable, with diamond mining, development, energy infrastructure, and the exotic pet trade threatening its limited habitat in southern Africa.

The Red List is not only a record of species at risk. It also shows that conservation works. In Australia, the numbat, a native mammal that feeds mainly on termites, has moved from endangered to near threatened after decades of predator control and habitat protection.

Protecting nature is possible, but action must come before ecosystems are pushed beyond recovery.

NEWS DIGEST | The Return of El Niño

Scientists are monitoring the possible return of El Niño later this year, raising concerns over intensifying droughts, floods, heatwaves, crop failures, and wildfires worldwide.

El Niño is a natural climate pattern driven by warming Pacific Ocean temperatures. But in a rapidly warming world, its impacts can become more severe.

Scientists warn it could contribute to drought across Australia, Indonesia, and parts of Asia, while increasing flood risks in parts of North and South America.

The 1877–78 El Niño contributed to devastating droughts and famines across multiple regions, with inequality and colonial systems worsening the crisis.

Today, forecasting systems are far more advanced, but vulnerability remains deeply uneven.

NEWS DIGEST | The Global Push Beyond Fossil Fuels Unlike formal UN negotiations, the summit in Santa Marta, Colombia, centred on implementation. Discussions focused on energy systems, financing, and debt, shifting attention from targets to how transitions actually happen. What we're tracking ⬇️
Nearly 60 countries gathered in Santa Marta, Colombia, for climate talks focused on moving beyond fossil fuels.

Unlike formal UN negotiations, the summit centred on implementation. Discussions focused on energy systems, financing, and debt, shifting attention from targets to how transitions actually happen.

The meeting forms part of an emerging ‘coalition of the willing’, as countries seek to move faster outside stalled global processes.

This is not a one-off moment. The process will continue with a second conference in Tuvalu in 2027, signalling a longer-term effort to coordinate a global transition away from fossil fuels.

Amid geopolitical instability and energy price volatility, fossil fuel dependence is increasingly framed as a structural risk. At the same time, unequal access to finance continues to shape who can transition, and how quickly.

In March 2026, an unusually early heat wave swept across the western United States, with temperatures rising up to 20–40°F (≈11–22°C) above seasonal norms and breaking records across multiple states.

This is not only about extreme heat, but about timing. Systems built around predictable seasons, from water storage to wildfire management, are being destabilised as seasonal patterns shift. Spring is becoming less reliable as a transition period.

Rapid snowmelt is already affecting water supply, while vegetation dries earlier, extending wildfire risk. Scientists warn that warming is making such events more likely and more disruptive by shifting the timing of entire climate systems.

NEWS DIGEST | The Fossil Fuel Trap

The war in Iran is more than a regional conflict. It exposes the global risks of fossil fuel dependence. UN Climate Chief Simon Stiell calls it ‘yet another abject lesson’ and says doubling down on oil and gas is ‘completely delusional’.

Energy price spikes, weakened security, and political vulnerability show the dangers of fossil fuel reliance. As Stiell notes, renewables aren’t subject to wars or fragile supply chains and offer stability, sovereignty, and a pathway to climate safety.

Ending fossil fuel dependence isn’t just about reducing emissions. It is a global security and economic imperative.

SEEDS OF CIVILISATION | Staples That Shaped History

Grains and plant-based foods have sustained humans for millennia — from wild grasses and legumes to wheat, rice, and maize. These staples fed communities, built empires, and shaped global systems.

As agriculture scaled, staple crops became tools of trade, taxation, and industrial profit. Today, they dominate global calories, yet are often reframed as ‘new’, despite long histories in Black, Indigenous, and other communities of colour.

Food Empowerment Project (@foodempowermentproject) actively challenges this erasure, questioning how cultural foods — particularly from BIPOC communities — are adopted, rebranded, and stripped of context. Through their vegan cultural food guides, they centre community-shared recipes that preserve cultural roots while supporting more compassionate food choices.

Their blog ‘A Reflection on My Veganism this AANHPI Month’ explores this further.

NEWS DIGEST | Fossil Expansion on Trial

A landmark civil case in the Paris Judicial Court could reshape how fossil fuel companies are held accountable for climate harm. The City of Paris and a coalition of NGOs and municipalities are seeking to compel TotalEnergies to rapidly cut emissions across its entire value chain under France’s ‘duty of vigilance’ law.

The hearings examine whether courts can require oil and gas majors to align operations with climate limits, as litigation becomes an increasingly central tool in climate governance. Observers say the outcome may influence similar cases globally, particularly as legal strategies shift from compensation towards forcing operational change.

The case sits within a growing wave of lawsuits targeting major carbon producers and testing the role of courts in enforcing climate commitments beyond voluntary pledges.

NEWS DIGEST | Climate Rule Repealed

The Environmental Protection Agency under Donald Trump has repealed the 2009 ‘endangerment finding’ — the scientific and legal basis that allowed the US government to regulate greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act.

The rule recognised that emissions harm public health, enabling limits on pollution from cars, power plants, and industry. Its repeal could weaken nationwide standards, create legal battles with states, and reshape how climate action is enforced.

Supporters frame the move as deregulation, while critics warn it prioritises fossil fuel interests and risks higher pollution levels.

💬 What protections remain when the foundation of climate regulation is removed?

NEWS DIGEST | Ice Outside The Law Humans have laws about land and sea — but not about sea ice. As the Arctic melts and shipping, drilling and new commercial routes expand, the region is entering a legal vacuum: one where frozen water isn’t clearly governed by existing treaties. #SystemicChange
Humans have laws about land and sea — but not about sea ice. As the Arctic melts and shipping, drilling and new commercial routes expand, the region is entering a legal vacuum: one where frozen water isn’t clearly governed by existing treaties.

Without a legal framework specific to ice, new economic activity in a rapidly warming region risks accelerating harm to ecosystems already under stress from climate change.

Some scholars now argue that reimagining legal status — even granting ‘rights’ to ice itself — could create firmer protection than piecemeal updates to ocean law.

NEWS DIGEST | Heating Cities With Data Centres

Finland is capturing waste heat from underground data centres and feeding it into district heating networks — turning server heat into a shared urban resource.

As AI drives rapid data expansion, Helsinki shows how digital infrastructure can be integrated into local energy systems, cutting emissions and improving efficiency. The model works best in cities that are cold, dense, and already utilize district heating — and it highlights the role of public utilities in keeping energy governance local.

Deadly floods have struck Aceh and North and West Sumatra, fuelled by extreme rain and years of forest loss that stripped hillsides of their natural defences. Rivers became ‘conveyor belts’ of timber, whole villages were swept away, and thousands remain missing.

Officials are now investigating upstream logging and land-clearance as more than 12 companies come under scrutiny.

Communities, wildlife and vital watersheds face long recovery ahead — a stark reminder that climate-driven storms become catastrophic when ecosystems are already weakened.
