Last chance, Wirral! ⏳ Do you live, work, study or volunteer in Wirral? We're listening to what brings communities together, and what could help. Share your views in our anonymous survey by 11.59pm Sunday 11 October: www.smartsurvey.co.uk/t/Wirral-Ins... #SocialCohesion
Last chance, #Wirral! ⏳ Only days left to tell us what brings your community together! The survey closes Sunday 11 October.

Do you live, work, study or volunteer in Wirral, or know someone who does?
Over the past few weeks, @Protection Approaches team has been in Wirral listening to people about what brings their communities together, and what could help bring them closer still.

Commissioned by Wirral Council's Community Safety Service, this community listening exercise is part of the council's three-year Community Cohesion Programme, funded by the Home Office and delivered with the Wirral Multi-Agency Hate Crime Strategy Group. Through conversations, interviews and an online questionnaire, we're hearing what people value in their communities, where they feel a sense of belonging, and the challenges they face.

What people tell us will help shape the programme's priorities over the coming years, from support for community-led initiatives to work tackling misinformation and hate crime.

The questionnaire is anonymous, takes just a few minutes, and closes at 11.59pm on Sunday 11 October.

Your voice matters! Please share your views and pass this on to anyone in Wirral who might want to take part:.

Great to see our work with the University of Leicester, Manifesto for Change, on the table at their event with Kick It Out. Kick It Out is also our great partner in delivering tailored active bystander training, so it was especially meaningful to see this collaboration highlighted.

3️⃣ As the FCDO’s restructure continues, will there be assurance that UK capabilities on atrocity prevention will not be reduced - in fact the team requires far greater seniority and political heft to uphold its significant mandate.
000
Protection Approaches @ibvprev.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
2️⃣ The is clear need for internal transparency and accountability over FCDO’s decisions to act — or not to. What consequence will there be for choosing “the least ambitious option” to protect civilians of #Sudan months before the London Conference and in the year before El Fasher fell?
000
Protection Approaches @ibvprev.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
1️⃣ why is there still an absence of any strategy or protocol for responding to atrocities — still no guidance on when there is sufficient evidence to trigger action.
000
Protection Approaches @ibvprev.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
We repeatedly warned: El Fasher’s fall to the RSF would bring catastrophe, offering the UK government options to avert mass atrocities. Ultimately our warnings failed, tens of thousands were killed. Dr Kate Ferguson from PA asked 3 critical questions in the #InternationalDevelopmentCommittee:

Protection Approaches @ibvprev.bsky.social · 22/06/2026
One thing is clear: threats to our democratic assets cannot be met with tanks on the lawn and drones in the skies alone. This was at the heart of the evidence given by PA's Co-Executive Director, Dr Kate Ferguson, to the #ForeignAffairsCommittee inquiry into cuts to the #IntegratedSecurityFund.

Protection Approaches @ibvprev.bsky.social · 12/06/2026
PA's Co-Executive Director, Dr Ferguson, gave evidence to #ForeignAffairsCommittee's inquiry into cuts to the Integrated Security Fund. She argued that conventional defence aren't enough to meet the changing nature of anti-democratic statecraft. Cohesion must be a core part of national security.

📈 The past decade has seen spiralling levels of hate crime. Official stats show incidents have more than tripled in England & Wales. With just 1 in 4 victims reporting incidents, we know that this is the tip of the iceberg. Yet, the government hasn’t released a Hate Crime Action Plan since 2016.

💡 Excellent piece by our Trustee Sherine El Taraboulsi-McCarthy on Gaza & the reckoning between humanitarianism & protection "We must rethink the role of international and local humanitarian actors in providing protection without abrogating the fundamental responsibility of states to provide it."

💭 The broader challenge remains: mass atrocity crimes are becoming a systematic feature of modern malign statecraft, used deliberately to destroy, displace & entrench power. As this kind of violence increasingly shapes geopolitical realities, the UK must update its approach accordingly.
000
Protection Approaches @ibvprev.bsky.social · 18/07/2025
She noted that the UK's approach to atrocity prevention has not been updated since 2019, despite the increasing use of identity-based atrocity violence against civilians. ✅ FCDO Minister @catherinewestmp.bsky.social acknowledged the concern & committed to taking the issue forward - a welcome step.
