Swansea University was founded over a century ago to solve society's problems. So on Day 1 of the Psychology degree programme we've got our students devising policy interventions within a Theory of Change framework I wonder how many other UK undergrads discover the Magenta Book in Week 1?

Seven years ago today we finished our utterly bonkers coast to coast to coast to coast to coast ride, all because we couldn't decide which coast-to-coast route to ride. So many tales from this one trip, perhaps especially pre-dawn breakfast with the Whitby trawlermen still in their oilskins

Are head injuries to cyclists an important cause of death in road travel fatalities? Conclusion
Answering the question ‘How important are head injuries in cyclists as a cause of road travel death?’ depends on the metric used for assessing importance. Pedestrians and drivers account for five and four times the number of fatal head injuries as cyclists. The fatal head injury rate is highest for cyclists by time travelled and for pedestrians using distance travelled.

Okay, 2.5 more hours last night, taking this to a total of nearly 25 hours. I'm calling this done. Enjoy the Crescent Nebula - the shockwaves created by a star ejecting two layers of gas, with the faster layer colliding with the slower layer

Did a reprocessing of this Iris Nebula photo too, having added another hour or two last week. This cloud of dust, lit by the star in the middle, is about 7 light years across

Prof. Ian Walker @ianwalker.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
Anyway it was surprisingly clear last night so I got over 3 more hours of photography on the Crescent Nebula. The finer detail is really coming out

Anyway, just in case there are clear skies for the eclipse on 12 August*, I was checking the Sun was still there yesterday evening. It's good news *no chance

In other news, the clear nights have continued and I've got nearly 12 hours on the Crescent Nebula. This is a star shedding its outer layers, with a fast-moving layer colliding with a slower-moving layer that was ejected earlier
