At least the gold leaf is on the ceiling and not on the food. I'm getting flashbacks to "The Young Ones" looking at that potato. "Don't look at me, I'm irrelevant".

Given the lack of coverage in the news, I presume most outlets thought it was a foregone conclusion Labour would keep the seat. Not even seen a soundbite from Farage over the contest.

"Beginning next week", so when Parliament returns from the conference recess. Wonder how many of those national tour dates will be in the US?

"We don't want you to be punished for working hard". So I'm giving the well-off free childcare by letting staff go from Arts England and the Environment Agency, who clearly do need to be punished, especially if they don't find another job in 3 months the scroungers!

A VAT cut on electricity had been mentioned but talk yesterday was a cut on all energy. Today it seems to just be electricity again so it might just be that the news went a little nuts yesterday.

What's had very little coverage (so far) is the scrapping of VAT on energy bills from next month. I've not seen any "Is that all" comments from media outlets or opposing MPs but the Man City news may have overshadowed this (and in some places might overshadow the pension announcement).

The Prime Minister has announced that emergency service workers, NHS staff, armed forces, education sector staff, council workers and the civil service are all going to get a guaranteed 2.5% pay rise every year going forward. Imagine the front page of the papers tomorrow if he'd said that?

Article comments across the land up in arms about the Social Care reforms that haven't been fully announced yet which basically boil down to "If people can't afford it, let them rot" knowing that those that can afford it will find a loophole to stop them having to pay for it.

Whilst "enjoying" root canal work at my Dentist, his playlist (lack of adverts suggested a playlist rather than the radio) treated me to The Smiths "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out".

And since 2008 they've lived through Austerity (which decimated schools and child services and was, apparently to pay for the bailout, though banks have made more than enough since to pay it back), Brexit (which stops them studying abroad) and COVID (which stopped their education for 12+ months)

It's outside the Premier League so they're not going to talk about the actual football are they.

Alternatively, talk to the man on the front page of BBC News who thinks Britain is no good, and get his company to pay tax on the money it makes in Britain and him to pay tax on the money he earns in Britain, then do the same with all the others who do the same thing.

Jim Ratcliffe, who was housed at UK taxpayers' expense, sent to a publicly funded grammar school, received a free university education and made his money buying assets from a former UK taxpayer-owned company has apparently "lost confidence in the UK." What more does he want from the UK?

They've had a shocker but Michael Owen calling it the worst VAR decision ever is a bit much. It's might only just be the worst this season so far.

They're also worried someone's going to the look at the books of big tech and realise the money is just going around in circles and governments are seeing none of it.

They didn't think they were getting enough bad publicity from racking up component prices and destroying the environment with their data centres so thought they'd point out how they could end the world, as though Putin or Trump having a bad day could do just the same.

Brilliantly put! "You are more likely to be treated by an immigrant than to be behind one in a queue." needs to go on the side of a bus.

People seem quite happy to call out Trump for what he's doing in Iran and elsewhere, without thought of the impact it might have on Americans, or even Christians, so am I being over-simplistic to think that this is the same thing? We're surely criticising the man, not people of the same faith.

You might want to look at some UK newspaper front pages to see how people have already jumped all over it despite what he said.

I presume there's nothing to stop the people of Clacton turning up to the Constituency Surgeries of local MP Nigel Farage dressed all in black and wearing balaclavas should they have a legitimate concern. Apart from the fact he doesn't host Constituency Surgeries of course.

IanTrem @iantrem.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
The real reason they've been told to wear the balaclavas.
Cutting from the Daily Telegraph from 8th September 2026 with a story about Nigel Farage saying his party will ban face coverings after the protests in Dover and Portsmouth. It's nothing to do with those protests, it's just his way of banning face coverings for religious reasons.

IanTrem @iantrem.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
A great many people have 'legitimate concerns' about a great many subjects. However, I don't see people turning up in balaclavas and a need for a police presence at, for instance, a school PTA meeting.

IanTrem @iantrem.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
I'll say this for the Reform party. It's leader and quite a few of it's leadership team are doing their best to get up close and personal with the crisis in our prisons.

I fear for the poor families about to endure a two hour train journey to Skegness with the family I'm sharing a train with to Nottingham. Not least because, at the end of it, they'll be in Skegness.

Just a minute, I hope you're using someone else's phone / computer or using a device in a library that's not been closed. Because if you are claiming a benefit and own a device that let's you interact with the Internet then how very dare you? Lee Anderson will be straight round!

If you want to see just how fast these companies can move if their own money is at stake, try uploading a clip from a football match where another broadcaster has the digital rights, or new film, and see how quickly it gets zapped. That should be the benchmark for removing CSAM and disinformation.

Sainsbury’s have done this before. There was the Conservative's "Intern" / "workfare" program where they got college / uni students to stack shelves for free. I can't remember when it was and any search leads to today's news but think it was under Cameron.

I wonder if they're just treating the early rounds of the league cup the same way most teams do? The "Sports Extra" commentators come from home team's local radio. Will be listening Saturday so will find out for sure.

It might also lead to is having department ministers who have knowledge of what they look after rather than, say, home- schooled eduction ministers who were promised a job and are given what's left over.

I wouldn't be against it if out also included: - Not being able to have any other job at the same time. - Not being able to claim any expenses (travel to/from Parlinent and a flat in Westminster would be provded) - Subsidised bar/restaurants in Houses of Parliment only for guests.

I know they are only a few minutes to go, but the Emirates is emptying quicker when Arsenal are winning than the London Stadium when West Ham are losing.

Nigel Farage blaming the UK's ills on immigrants is like the Premier League's Richard Masters blaming all corruption in football on teams in the Dorset Senior League. Why can people see where the real issue is in football and not in the country?

I've recently read that King says the film ends better than his story so I might watch now having not bothered before (because of the ending). Given Darabont's work on Shawshank and The Green Mile, it's bound to be any good.
