Indiscriminately reposted by an aggregator because of its invocation of nature (moss) and possibly medium (chalk). For all of my examination of art I do not know how far removed I am from the concept

This December will mark twenty years since Bill took me on at FFC. In that time--and long past that time--he did far more than what anybody could possibly ask in helping a guy figure out what he wanted out of life. Thank you, Bill. Get well soon. @flmfrkcentral.bsky.social

And she had told me that Bill described me on glowing terms: "very humble, a bit of a perfectionist, and that you had never met." I emailed and thanked him, but y'know, if you want to talk about humble... And, anyway, getting that job helped facilitate my escape/estrangement the following year.

So I think we were both relieved that I wanted out. (He called it a Mexican standoff, and yeah.) But when I went in for that interview, five years later, the editor mentioned contacting Bill--something that I wasn't expecting, given that I had known her and the paper for that long.

Ian Shade @ianshade.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Now, I think the best way to my departure from FFC is "amicable enough," because I was struggling to evolve my writing, fighting off-and-on depression, and my work for the site in that last year had been intermittent and frankly unreadable. Bill had told me as much--in a very kind and concerned way.

Ian Shade @ianshade.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
The editor was, is, my classmate's mother. She contacted me directly because they had an editorial assistant position open, and--not having contact for ten years--of course she wanted references too. Not having much employment history, I had already been listing Bill, unbidden.

Ian Shade @ianshade.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Please send Bill some kindness during his recovery. Story I've never told: a full *five years* after I left FFC, I was aimless, living at home, newly aware of my father's narcissism, in therapy, looking for work; listed as a reference an old critic job that I'd had from high school from a classmate.

Using AI as the next phase of screencap dunk culture is really the only place left for it to go, insofar that the destructive cost will be more tangible, more number-crunchable, than the abstract dissemination of right-wing garbage through sarcastic contradiction.
