Yep, I agree newspapers, books and other high effort publications are necessary. But they are not social media recording everyone's random personal daily thoughts.

Haha yep, :-) but it did have some good aspects.

Maybe things are different in silicon valley, but I think most people's friends are not randomers from across the world who messaged them, but friends of friends, or similar, like meeting at an event or a club or whatever.

We absolutely don't need both. Humanity thrived for millennia without a public permanent record of random daily thoughts of everyone. Democracy can't survive the amount of targeting you can do with the personal profiles of people's views made from this. Cambridge Analytica on steroids.

The fact that Facebook can read everything isn't ideal yes, but most people still prefer that to public-like-Twitter (compare user counts). But an E2EE Facebook, now we are talking.. ;-) I get way more spam on bluesky than on facebook.

I think we might have different definitions of public. Public means anyone can read it, including governments, attackers and others who wish you harm. So Facebook, the biggest social network of all, is not public.

You can also define your own groups. These are private broadcast groups that let you share something with a larger group much faster. Members of the group cannot see other members or the name of the group. We've also added support to the weboffice app for the 10 languages that Peergos supports.

G'day folks! There is a new @peergos.org release out with 2 cool new features. Now you can set a space limit on any file/dir you share writable, including secret links. So we've finally removed the warning that anyone you share write capability to could fill your space! github.com/Peergos/web-...

VC finance definitely the critical proximate cause. But in the end its the possibility of super-lucrative "exits", where the techbros redefine what is legally, politically, socially acceptable, this is what sets the chain in motion. Even Friedman, the Pope of neoliberalism has warned us as much...

We need to think hard when designing protocols about their emergent properties and effects on society. We are creating the future. Let's make it a good one.

I'm still disappointed that Jack Dorsey limited it to public conversation. Society and democracy need private conversation to survive, not more mass surveillance. We need to design our protocols to fight surveillance capitalism not enable it. Silicon valley and the VC adjacent seem blind to this.

Awesome, thank you. That (159.0a1 (2026-09-25)) raises it from 250 MB/s to 450MB/s on my machine. Chromium is 900 MB/s on the same machine. I'm using the github.io version. It's an AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS. Can I help with a profile dump or similar?

If Android had used a copyleft license AND not had a single company own all the copyright, then Google would not be able to pull the shenanigans they are now. This is why @peergos.org is copyleft licensed and contributors retain their own copyright.

Alas not very likely postmarketOS is dramatically less private/secure than either the Android Open Source Project or iOS. It greatly reduces privacy and security to below desktop levels, which is much worse, not better. It does the opposite of protecting against exploits or better sandboxing apps. 😩

It also lets someone delete files when they are over their space quota. Previously this wasn't possible because the delete has to first write some small blocks and those block writes were rejected as increasing the storage. Now we can calculate the size diff inside the single commit call.

Ian Preston @ianopolous.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
This was a lot of fun. I've had this bulk/commit API planned for a few years now. It reduces the rounds trips from 4 to 1, and reduces the number of signatures by 1000x. That paves the wave for post-quantum signatures, as well as being much faster for both the client and the server.

We've developed a secure paste feature replacing traditional clipboard APIs. Users will be able to take away clipboard access from apps to use this instead. It integrates into the standard selection toolbar, input methods, accessibility services and keyboard shortcuts. We plan to get it merged soon.

Google have properly shat the bed. I have a feeling the financial director asked AI/Gemini, what they could remove to save money that consumers wouldn't notice and that would create less issues for their corporate partners being shown up for their bad app development practices. It's answer MTE.

Some may be wondering what implications, if any, this has for @peergos. Even if all ipfs work, and infrastructure stopped today we would be unaffected as a protocol. We have our own minimal implementation, and these days we basically do HTTP over (jvm)libp2p + kademlia.
