Back in the game and this has to be the strangest attack profile for missiles I’ve ever seen. If it’s a submarine or a surface warship you might see them inbound on similar bearings as the Point Of Origin (POO) is fairly constant. For an aircraft the POO is moving faster so the bearing changes.

Super clear airspace to spot our two buzzing red boxes that are representing two cruise missiles. Meanwhile I can provide a picture of what UK airspace can really look like in peacetime. And there are no buzzes. It would drive you potty as a Radar Operator to have every Track buzzing like that.

Resuming after a break for dinner. So it’s bonkers time again with #TheWargame It true we don’t have many T45 destroyers available, so according to the scenario they’re planning to stick it by Faslane. Ostensibly because it’s home to the nuclear deterrent. Except it isn’t.

There are many victims of a sectarian campaign of intimidation, sparked by the protests at Drumcree. On 12 July 1998, Jason (aged nine), Mark (aged 10), and Richard (aged 11) were three brothers murdered by the UVF in a firebomb attack on their home in Ballymoney, County Antrim, Northern Ireland.
Jason, Mark and Richard Quinn (The Quinn Brothers) - 12th July 1998

SEFF remembers Jason, aged 9, Mark, aged 10, and Richard Quinn, aged 11 were murdered on 12th July 1998 by UVF terrorists.

The three brothers were murdered via a firebomb attack on their home in Ballymoney, County Antrim.

The attack occurred at around half past four in the morning as the inhabitants of the house slept. A car containing members of the UVF arrived at the house and threw a petrol bomb through a window at the rear of the house.

The petrol bomb was made from a whiskey bottle. The sounds of the boys' shouting had woken their mother, who found her bedroom full of smoke. Chrissie Quinn, Raymond Craig and a family friend Christina Archibald escaped the resulting fire with minor injuries.

Chrissie had thought the boys had escaped the fire as she couldn't locate them in the dense smoke before she jumped to safety from a first-floor window.

Two of the brother's bodies were found in their mother's bedroom and the other in another bedroom. Chrissie was taken to hospital and released the next day after receiving minor injuries and shock in the attack.

Only one of the family's children was not in the house at the time of the attack. Lee, aged 12, the eldest boy, was staying with his grandmother in Rasharkin, a few miles away.

In April 1999 the former home of the boys in Carnany Park was demolished and replaced with a children's play park as a memorial.

At the brothers' Requiem Mass, the bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Down and Connor, Dr. Walsh observed that: "For all too long the airwaves and the printed page have been saturated with noises - strident, harsh, discordant noises - carrying words of hatred, of incitement, of recrimination, words not found in the vocabulary of Christianity. But the time for words is over. It's now time for silence, a silence in which we will hear the voice of God".

And Robert Hamill. Robert was 25 when he died after he was beaten by so called loyalists in Portadown, County Armagh, in 1997.
Robert Hamill - 8th May 1997

SEFF remembers Robert Hamill who was murdered by a mob of so-called loyalists.

Robert was a 25-year-old Roman Catholic civilian, co-habiting with two children and was attacked on 27th April at 1:30am by a loyalist mob in Portadown. He died in the Royal Victoria Hospital without regaining consciousness.

His girlfriend gave birth three months later to his third child and was at his bedside when he died. Robert was walking home with a cousin’s husband and two other women relatives after a night out at St. Patrick's hall when a mob of about 30 people attacked them and beat both men unconscious.

One of the women threw herself on top of Robert in an attempt to save him. The other man recovered from his injuries.

Robert's coffin was followed through the streets of Portadown by 1,000 mourners. Six Portadown men were charged with murder but the charges were dropped against all of them but one.

SEFF's thoughts and prayers are with all innocents impacted by the brutal and sectarian motivated murder of Robert.

I also remember Constable Frank O’Reilly of the RUC who was murdered by a blast bomb thrown at police lines close to Drumcree church. Alt Text from SEFF.
Frank O’Reilly - 6th October 1998

SEFF remembers Frank O'Reilly who was murdered as the consequence of a Red Hamd Defenders attack.

Frank was a 30-year-old Roman Catholic, married with three children, who was an RUC GC police officer and who was seriously injured in a loyalist bomb attack in Portadown on 5th September.

The Red Hand Defenders carried out the attack.

Tensions had been high in the area as the Orange Order and other loyalists continued their protests against the ban on them parading on the Garvaghy Road.

A bomb was thrown at the police during loyalist violence in which Frank lost an eye and suffered serious head injuries caused by the explosion. He died in a Belfast hospital four weeks later.

He had three children aged 10-years-old, 4-years-old, and 15-weeks-old.

Ten years earlier, Frank met his wife on a blind date. Two days before he died his wife brought the baby to his bedside.

She said: "I brought the baby in, but I couldn't bring her too close because of the risk of infection. I just held her so he could see her, and he just smiled".

She said: "Frankie considered himself a Christian, not a Protestant or a Catholic. He was just the best. I would never have got a better husband than him".

SEFF’s thoughts and prayers are with all innocents impacted by the murder of Frank.

The actual RID display is to the left, but you would be looking at the Cathode Ray Tube to see what the Plot was doing and that’s what then got entered via the keyboard. You would eyeball, the heading and speed, and we had a gizmo that allowed you to input the range & bearing to the RID. That then converted into to a GEOREF position. And to wrap up my last, while I try and remember more books; is ‘Noah’s Castle’ which now seems quite prescient with its tale of economic collapse, food shortages and rationing. It’s a bit dated now, (so maybe time for a reboot?), but back in 1980 it seemed like it could really happen.
