From Prog 1204, 2000, an ad for #ThargsFutureShocks, those bite-sized thrills that exist both to fill in if the comic's running a few pages short, or to launch the careers of creators like #AlanMoore and #GrantMorrison, or, as here, #FraserIrving (drawing a #SteveMoore tale). #2000ad #houseads

And that’s pretty much it for this time round. The book feels almost like it’s homaging early 60s Marvel books - “Ok, Larry, now let’s have him fight CABLE and SABRETOOTH! In the SEWERS!” “Great, get drawing, Marc!”. It’s all very frenetic. Frankly, I’m exhausted just reading it. End

And then, after #43 (a story that feels like a fill-in) and #44 (an ACTUAL fill-in), it’s non-stop fighting for #45 and #46, as Wolverine takes on Sabretooth AND #LadyDeathstrike AND the #HunterInDarkness (with a bit of help from Jubilee).

Yep, that’s right. Sabretooth’s back, hairier than ever, and he’s got a secret for Logan: he’s his dad!! Inevitably, a fight occurs, in an issue made all-the-more exciting by a guest appearance by #Cable. And as if that’s not exciting enough, #NickFury turns up to pour scorn on Sabretooth’s claim.

In #41, Elsie-Dee saves her new pal, taking him to the relative safety of the sewers under New York, where longtime readers may remember Wolverine’s arch-nemesis, #Sabretooth, was last seen being mostly dead. Well, guess what?

Albert gets a bit jealous, steals a Stealth Bomber (no, really), and crashes it into Wolverine, who ends up falling into the East River.

But… Elsie-Dee’s smart enough to decide she doesn’t much fancy self-destruction as a career goal, and latches onto Wolverine as his latest kid sidekick. Wolverine and #Jubilee visit with Storm at the X-Mansion (or what’s currently left of it), then go play pool with #Forge, for some reason.

"Albert"'s working with another robot, this one in the form of a small child called “Elsie Dee” (geddit?) to lure Wolverine into an ambush. The plan is for Elsie-Dee to blow herself up when she meets Wolverine, because that’ll definitely kill the adamantium-boned regenerating man.

Issues 38-40 guest-star #Storm, who wants to find out why Wolverine has apparently been robbing mob-run casinos. Turns out it’s not Logan, but a robot duplicate called Albert, built by his old enemy, #DonaldPierce.

Right, then, #xmen90s time, and having seen #Wolverine reuniting with the X-Men in “X-Tinction Agenda”, let’s see what the ol canucklehead is getting up to in his own book. All these issues are brought to us by #LarryHama and #MarcSilverstri, so let’s see what they brought us in the summer of 1990.

It’s a bit messy in places, and there’s a lot of what #DoctorWho fans would recognise as “running up and down corridors” (killing time because we’ve got another 3 episodes to get through yet), but it’s not bad. Certainly, compared to later “events”, it’s pretty good! End

By the end, Storm’s gotten her powers (and adult body) back. Warlock’s dead, Wolfsbane and Havok stay on Genosha to help pick up the pieces, and the X-Teams are all chums again.

None of his plans quite work, and there’s a lot of “Hodge plans to betray his Genoshan allies, and THEY intend to betray HIM” going on. We get some nice fights, Rob Liefeld gets to draw Jubilee, Cyclops shaves his head and REALLY bulks up, Wolverine and Archangel scrap, and Hodge gets trashed.

And what is his plan? Well… * Kidnap some X-People. * Put them on trial. * Use Warlock’s transmode virus to turn into a freaky shapeshifter. * Lure the other X-Men into attacking Genosha, to raise the level of anti-mutant fear. * Engineer a hook-up for Wolverine and Jean Grey, to make Cyclops sad.

The plot’s pretty straightforward: #CameronHodge, X-Factor’s former public relations manager hates mutants, and he’s taken over the island of #Genosha (where mutants are used as slaves by the definitely-not-apartheid-era-South-Africa), from where he’s planning to wipe out the various X-Teams.

#xmen90s hits “X-Tinction Agenda”, the first of the 90s crossovers, something that will become a fixture of the next decade. And we’re at the point where, after a couple of years of the X-Teams doing pretty much their own thing, they’re going to start being a lot closer for a while. #xtinctionagenda
