This meme could easily be adapted to watching the Commanders draft a top college QB. -fellow sufferer of perpetual dissappointment in both teams.

I was being semi-serious. I would have enjoyed a ruder response than “is that a serious question?” and the reporter deserved it, but it’s almost certainly better that he answered it the way he did. I’m constantly struck at how normal and likable he seems whenever I hear him talk.

He’s too polite for politics. That was a ridiculously stupid question.

I am also not well travelled, but it seems like when you see images of crowded Asian cities, there’s a lot more small food places that mostly serve take-out and/or only have a bar and stools instead of tables and booths. Might be an impression mainly from watching Anthony Bourdain’s show, though.

I couldn’t find an option to report the account for using mean to characterize a highly asymmetric distribution, so I had to settle for impersonation.

The motivating factor is more not wanting to have to acknowledge being wrong as the money. A small-stakes bet is far more likely to be checked on years later than a “regular” prediction because it’s socially acceptable to do so. Digging up a 10 year old post is otherwise portrayed as obsessive.

Not an expert on IP law, but I’ve heard that recipes aren’t protected by copyright? That would main reason you see the difference. There’s probably some nuance like you can copyright the instructions, but not the ingredients, oven temps etc, but that’s precisely what ai could work around.

I suspect some of these CEOs (including Musk) who talk about moon colonies in 5 years are acting under similar perverse incentives. How are they going to hold that record shattering IPO with a mundane business plan to marginally reduce the cost of satellite launches?

It seems like the incentive to attract attention will still be there, but enshittifiers will just try to optimize for bots. I’m not sure the results are worse, but I’m pessimistic about my future AI agents bringing back information *I* want rather than what somebody else wants me to have.

Doesn’t this come from most Americans not appreciating the full cost of their private plans? EG My employer directly pays ~5 x more for than I do (as a pretax deduction from my salary), but it’s only my contribution I use to at compare options each year. It’s about 5% of my salary vs. 25%.

I don’t even think Trump ever says it. Too long a phrase. That whole post has way too many big words for me to believe it’s him, yet still captures his general insanity. My money is on they’ve got a chat bot posting for him.

I think a lot of so-called victimless crimes have carry-on effects that put costs/pressures on other people/society. On theory, sex work could be legal but still accepted society-wide as something nobody should be forced to do in order to buy food/pay rent. In practice, I’m highly skeptical.

Yep-they might as well be buying Super Bowl ads to remind the major media outlets reminding them that BoTHsIdeS!!!! is their most sacred commandment. Just blatantly obvious and frustrating to know it will work.

If you’re just making the point he was cynical on this issue, fine…he clearly triangulated and claimed to be personally opposed to it while running for president, but I don’t think he ever suggested he wanted states that had legalized it to be forced to backtrack. He never supported DOMA, AFAICR.

The problem with favoring systems that measure intensity is the actual measurement is almost always a combination of intensity and means. The caucus requirement to be there in person for an extended length of time disadvantages people with child care needs and inflexible work hours.

Ugh. I know it’s a comic, but it just reminds me how much political commentary is like this too, and I find that so much more frustrating. “This political science professor has a 12-variable algorithm that correctly predicted* the last 8 elections, and it says our guy will win!” *after the fact

The “moderates” did this to themselves. The Democratic Party’s popularity is at an all time low at a time when the opposition party has gone all in on Facism, because they’re doing enough to try to prevent it.

This actually seems highly likely to me. Didn’t Bush’s approval spike to ~90% after 9/11? Having a common enemy is such a well know unifier, politicians regularly try to make one up if there isn’t a real one available.

Instead of a wild-west of competition for bot attention, but my money would be on agentic agents just making the internet more of a walled garden due to vertical Monopolies. IE Google-based agents will pretend to look at all vendors equally but will favor Google subsidiaries and advertisers.

I had a dumb joke about what happens to the median credit card balance if you remove the billionaires, but now I’m more curious about this:
Picture of the reply interaction to Matt Darling’s post indicates it was originally written in Japanese and asks if the reply should be in Japanese.

Republicans: double the deficit every time they control the government. Also Republicans: “Democrats need to not be so reckless with the deficit.” Democrats: ^ what they said.

Oh sure. That’s what someone in a bubble would say. I think you need another article that only interviews Trump voters so you can learn that there are two sides [record scratch] there is only one side to the story and it’s the conservative side.

I’ve never tried it and can’t vouch for its effectiveness, but the idea of using tomato juice is a lot older than Rugrats. My mom used to talk about doing it for her childhood dogs.

It’s not just the “savvy” bluesky users either. This is precisely how three-time Trump voters who aren’t thrilled to be defending the Iran war and the Epstein files cover-up are avoiding confronting the consequences of their own voting. It’s beyond just whataboutism to pretend Obama was just as bad.

Like all forms of academic dishonestly, prohibited AI use by some students negatively impacts other students through wrecked curves, false accusations, and forced changes to teaching pedagogy, but they’re also constantly being told not to worry about those students, they’re just cheating themselves.

I think there’s an element of this but it’s also overly simplistic. Most college students understand there is a tension between the value of actually learning the material and honing the skills, which AI use circumvents, and the credentialism of having a degree, which AI offers a shortcut to.

They’re not even distancing themselves that much! For all the criticism, Tucker still says he’d probably vote for Trump again?!?? “Yeah, I’m a little disturbed by Satan’s plan to ensnare all of humanity into an eternity of torture, but I can’t vote for the Democrat, so I guess I’ll hold my nose…”

you do not have to hand it to tucker carlson or marjorie taylor greene or alex jones or megyn kelly. they're all rats who see trump as a sinking ship and they're getting ready to jump in preparation for their next act. you do not have to fall for it.

That’s wild, because I assume most Americans don’t agree with that consensus. I don’t claim to be well travelled, but I will say I’ve met more Germans and Brits here in U.S. who say they like American beer than I would have expected too, so maybe its some kind of “grass is greener” phenomenon.
