Dear @mark-carney.bsky.social, we want to bring the relationship with Canada to the highest level possible. I would like to work with you on opening the door for Canada to being the first associate member of the EU. And create a common prosperity and economic security space.

A UK return will strengthen the EU, strengthen Europe, and weaken Eurosceptic populists further by demonstrating the totality of Brexit’s futility. That’s more important than attempting to hold the UK to standards no other MS is held by provisions not included in the Treaties.

Jacob, I think we're on the same page - it is negotiable. But the EU must decide whether it is in its own interest to insist on getting the UK to commit to join the euro. It would be a symbolic victory that is practically useless - with the effect of making it politically harder for the UK to rejoin

Ian Cooper @iancooper.bsky.social · 20/05/2026
Sweden joined after Maastricht so the obligation to join the third stage of EMU was already there in the Treaty.

Ian Cooper @iancooper.bsky.social · 20/05/2026
By that logic any MS could wriggle out its EU commitments by holding a referendum (as Hungary tried to do with migration in 2016). The simple fact is that the EU would never force a MS like Poland or Sweden to adopt the euro. There should not be a double standard for the UK. It's a de facto opt out

Poland's foreign minister insists that the UK should not get its opt-outs back if it rejoins the EU - including the euro opt-out. However, last time I checked Poland was not in the eurozone either, and has no plans of joining! In fact, ALL non-EZ MS have a de facto opt-out, including obvs. Sweden

The problem with Reverse QMV is that it is a form of minority rule. The decision to *go ahead* with sanctions (to not overturn the Commission decision) can be made by a very small group of populous member states. Even reverse *simple* majority voting would be preferable from a democratic pt of view

This is a breathtaking achievement. Governments *always* lose seats over time through attrition and declining popularity. It is unheard of in a FPP parliamentary system that a minority government could turn itself into a majority government by enticing floor-crossers and winning by-elections.
