Duel Masters just showed off artwork for an MTG collab Fabulous Art (it's like a Secret Lair, more or less) and one of the cards features Ugin-chan (or Uwugin, if you prefer). Note the chibi Dragonlords of Tarkir also appearing.

Art of Ugin chan from the Duel Masters You Are a Planeswalker set.

also if i could beam one bit of advice into the heads of bigger submittees this year it might be this. we've been seeing an increase in nextfest demo submissions over the last few years - if your game is coming out in the next 6 months it's usually way better to submit a dev build than a short demo

If you’re talking lo-fi, handmade aesthetics in a TCG, I would like to shout out this 2020 printing of Faerie Shower from Duel Masters.

A very clearly hand written Duel Masters card, on a white background, using both green and blue markers. It’s written in shorthand, with abilities like Shield Trigger written as simply “ST”. Functionally it’s a 4 mana nature/water spell that lets you look at the top two cards, then put one in the mana zone and one in your hand.

Middle-earth has come up a lot lately because of my day job, and it’s made me angry all over again about the whole “why didn’t they fly there on the eagles” thing, despite the fact that absolutely no one has brought it up and also the set is about The Hobbit. Just remembering a guy to get mad at.

I don’t know what happened online today because I went up into the mountains and looked at the fish, under the water.

Shimmering blue-green water that can be seen directly through. A distorted bolder is visible under the water, as is a small trout.

In important Ian news: they’re doing a Freiren collab in Duel Masters Play’s. As is the norm for DMP collabs, these are heavily played cards people will actually want to put in decks, like this one:

Freiren alt art of Mixel, Strange Stone // Jamming Chaff. This card is a super effective floodgate, actively spoiling several major strategies. A real Kill On Sight opponent for my decks.

Hi #portfolioday! I'm Robin, an illustrator who's done art for tabletop & video games, character design, +more. I love making colorful characters, animals/creatures, fantasy themes, nature, & humor ranging from silly to WTF. Currently looking for gigs! 📧: robinsevakis@gmail.com 🎨: jadedsketch.com

Illustration of an army of white ducks and red pandas waging war in the Himalayas. In the center is one armored duck and red panda with swords in battle. A blocky, cracked stone textured bold caps title reads CUTE AGGRESSION with a smaller orange-red subtitle reading Battle for Mt. Egduutei

3 character design illustrations labeled "The Rhydin Crew." A dark haired, tan-skinned half elf woman with a silver staff and flowy purple dress, a blue haired elf man with blue tunic and large white feathered wings holding a scroll and tome, and a yellow haired elf woman wearing scant green clothes, brown leather armor and accessories, holding a sword and giving a peace sign

Illustration of Dumb Bear, a dumb-looking, wall-eyed brown bear, about to jump on a trampoline that is directly under a ceiling fan in someone's living room.

Stickersheet design for "Red Clan" character art from the game Flippin Ninjas. Backdrop shows silhouetted bamboo over Mt Fuji with a large moon (or sun?) in a dark red sky. Chibi character art of a ninja, dragon, monk, lion dog, shogun, and samurai are over the top.

We visited the ruins of a Japanese internment camp and learned about what the US had done to innocent people during WWII. I think technically we were on the way back from a field trip to collect fossil sea life (also regionally-specific), but one of those stuck with me more than the other.

As this notes, don’t send a demo if you can help it! I found one of my favorite games of last year while judging. I didn’t vote for it because the demo was good, but wasn’t better than some of the many games I played to completion. I beat the full game A MONTH later and would 100% have voted for it.

In Washington state, when we first switched to all mail in voting, there was a spot to add a stamp. Most places your ballot would be delivered without one, but even an implied poll tax of one stamp is unacceptable, and those ballots now mail back for free. No poll taxes, no exceptions, ever.

Today in perseverating on Duel Masters: I got Black Box Pack, an absolutely bonkers set. We this card that flips between Deepsea Janus, Temporal Warpanther and Crimson Lord Janus, Temporal Warpanther, clearly a reference to the two faced god of Chaos, depicted here as house cats. #wotcstaff

Deepsea Janus, a four cost Water creature who draws a card when entering or being flipped to. If you play a fire card he flips into…

Crimson Lord Janus, who gives a creature Power Attacker +2000 and Speed Attacker when entering or being flipped to. Blue creatures flip him back.

When Utah put a “moratorium” on gender affirming care for minors, they pretended it was out of concern. They commissioned the University of Utah to research outcomes. 2.5 years later the report was clear: it’s safe, it works, there is no justification for a ban. They banned it anyway.

Now that I’m a Duel Masters Guy (again, I do work at WotC, but not in or with Duel Masters, I find things out when the public does), I want to ramble about the newly announced card type Duelist, which is like a Planeswalker but not, in ways I think are fun to talk about.

This is Vanquish, a Duelist card for Duel Masters. He’s like… techno shinobi robot guy? He’s blue and people have said he has Jace vibes. He costs two mana and has two abilities.

I was standing at a crosswalk when Sean Nelson, lead singer of Harvey Danger, walked up on the opposite corner. He tried to jay walk across, but got stuck on the median when traffic picked up. He looked both ways, then at me. He made a sort of “well gosh” face. The light changed and we all crossed.

I think a key part of understanding the Duel Masters hole I’ve gone down is understanding is that the mascot card, Bolshack Dragon, has had many updates and iterations. Here’s one of the latest, as well as an alternate art that is, I want to be clear, the same card.

Bolshack Arczeos NEX, a 5 cost light civilization Duel Masters card. It’s an armored dragon with “costs one less if you have an armored creature,” “blocker,” “double breaker,” “when this creature attacks you may put an armored creature on the field,” “when this creature leaves you may shieldify the top card of your deck,” and “escape”. Also it has 6500 power. Art is a super detailed armored dragon surrounded by light aligned magical energy.

Mechanically the exact same card but it’s two anime school girls interacting through a window. The one with dark hair has a headpiece that evokes the dragon’s helmet.

I’ve decided to get real into Duel Masters. Do I know much about it? Absolutely not. Is this a sign WotC is brining it back in English? No, this is my own neurodivergent perseveration and is unrelated to work. Is it true there’s a dragon with ∞ Power? Yes, but its mana cost is ∞ too so it’s fine.
