They could have written "Man charged after driving through bowling alley." It could have been a mad axe man forcing the car to swerve. The point is that the BBC rarely associate people with car crime. Cyclists collide with cars. Pedestrians collide with cars. They are rarely driven.

They'll probably snag on the high voltage feed to the refinery and still manage to blow themselves up - they've got form for it after all.

The council has a zero-tolerance approach to offensive graffiti - but what's their policy towards light-hearted nonsense graffiti?

In the UK, if something is sold with 0% APR then it is unlawful to offer a discount for cash. My dealer offered 0%, I said I'd not bother cos of the paperwork, test drove, he offered a price, I decided the cashflow was useful - and he refused the loan because he'd done a special cash price. Hmm.

Little thing to look forward to having just rewatched them this week. Riker's exasperation with a drunk crew member. 2 seconds of brilliance in the background.

It's crept in. You'll notice PayPal has an installment offer every time you buy something. Lots of retailers have it as an option with little apparent credit checking. It's reviving the mail order catalogue payments of 30 years ago, paying for small items over 36 weeks at significant interest.

It was the 60 second cut off if you go below a certain threshold which was to do with them working around over-deployment on timed laps. They basically disabled the battery timeout which was kicking in cos the cars were going suspiciously slowly - too slow to spin up the turbo, even on a Ferrari.

Teams inflicted this on themselves by cheating the system. Amusing guilty "We put this into production without testing it." comments from the FIA developers. Problem fixed in 20 minutes. It took me two weeks to get authorisation to change a configuration switch which we knew was mostly harmless.

I'm going to award a #NoDriverInvolved as there were two cars and only one person arrested, who may not even have been in the BMW. The rest of the article seems to be describing cars in autonomous mode. The BBC really don't believe that cars can crash under human supervision.

My local shared use path had the expenditure of a painted entry arrow and painted exit arrow. There is no other clue there is a shared path there, driveways, flat entry road, care home entry all to be negotiated without a hint to drivers. OTOH it does stop drivers shouting at cyclists in the road.

If it had been repossessed the car would at least have gone towards their debt. Now they have all the debt and still no car.

I hate being pedantic about seat bookings, but you know it'll go horribly wrong if you aren't. Basically, be German about it and it works. Perhaps better is the Japanese system where you have to have a reservation for some carriages, other carriages have no reservations.

The wedge Escort was one of those cars which started out as a sharp and snappy eye-catching design that got worse with every refresh. Yet the Sierra got better from a poor start, as did the Mondeo.

I wonder what my bike fuel costs are? It's not zero, on a 60 mile ride I'll probably spend £10 on food and drink that I wouldn't otherwise spent, so about 17p a mile.

The oddest thing about the Bee Gees is at times their singing, even on their big hits, can be quite unpleasant. Robin Gibb's quavering whine, or Barry's overused falsetto, (yet I seem to recall he had a decent normal voice). A great songbook though, even with some dubious lyrics in the 60s.

In Germany, where there is a jam, drivers seem to naturally create a gap just in case before a siren is ever heard. In the UK, much entertainment can be found watching the cars chugging down the outside lane oblivious to the lights and sirens right behind them.

Being in IT in the 1980s, there was something magical about the IBM keyboards we used, especially on the dumb terminals we used on the dinosaur mainframes of the era. They seemed to work by ESP, the key depressing themselves as your finger barely brushed their surface. They clacked nicely too.

#NoDriverInvolved The person arrested is not described as the driver, just a local drunk or druggie passing nearby or living in the house and causing a nuisance at the scene presumably, the car was never driven and there was nobody in it.

Manufacturers designing features for supposed convenience over safety. My car makes it a feature to exit the car while it is active - exiting deactivates it - but who knows what the driver might do in between coming to a halt & getting out. A keyed auto used to have an interlock - keyless removed it

In the UK, a video screen like this is already illegal, but detecting their use would be hard. People don't need extra help to drive distracted, I watched some guy nearly sucking his dick, his head was so far down texting, parked seconds earlier - heading for a line of parked cars. Surfaced JIT.

However, I think distinct timelines or eras is the only sensible way to avoid death by cannon. Long related series becoming more & more self-referential is the death of imaginative writing.

Ian Spencer 🐧 @ian.spennys.world · 02/10/2026
I think the fundamental problem is that when movies become series, e.g. the 1970s Superman, or the Burton Batman, or the Star Trek TOS movies, they inevitably cannot sustain the imagination and creativity. A 4th was lined up and vanished into studio politics and money.

Fundamentally, the illogic and impossibility of it is what convinced me against religion. Add in the deliberate gotchas, you cannot have proof as that undermines faith, and a fair few centuries of faith leaders coming up with rules to ensure the faithful are not allowed independent thought...

My dad was a Methodist Minister, he was bigly into the all-forgiving God. I think his theory was that Hell was for those knowingly being evil as opposed to innocently bumbling through life. "Knowing God and his teachings" together with "deliberately doing evil" - fast track to the down escalator.

We have trading standards laws where retailers give a comparative price measure like pence per 100g, so you can see that the bulk product is more expensive than the normal on special offer. People still buy the giant size because it ought to be cheaper.🤔😦

You'd do it like Britain which uses metric for important things like engineering, but when it came to the public, they panicked and we ended up with grams and pints and things on metric that are actually still imperial measures, like jam coming in 454g jars. We buy petrol in litres but use mpg. 🤔

20 years ago, my boss got himself a Maserati, basically Ferrari with a practicalish body. About £70k at the time. He reversed into a pillar and the one rear panel he hit cost £8k to repair. At the time you could buy new cars for that.

Spanish cities have generally been revamped to reduce car access. Taking the lane wouldn't make much difference to traffic as it's been heavily calmed and pedestrians are well catered for with cars conceding willingly on ped crossings and crossing lights. Culturally more likely to be accepted.

I'm going with transmission coolant, my Mercs had a little cooler radiator hung down below the radiator at the front and my 1999 had a leak from the pipework there. It's too dark and oily to be washer fluid.

Ian Spencer 🐧 @ian.spennys.world · 01/10/2026
I didn't think there would be that much brake fluid in a car - good luck stopping 2.5 tonnes of of van with no brake fluid. Could also be transmission oil - very expensive running an auto box without it.
000
Ian Spencer 🐧 @ian.spennys.world · 01/10/2026
It might have been cheaper if they hadn't kept running the engine without any oil. What idiot would see the amount of fluid deposited from the car and think it was sensible to drive or direct it to be driven?
