How to cook perfect lasagne
Just to be clear, that's 'lasagne' as in a baked dish of flat pasta and bolognese sauce. Do you prefer the British, American or Italian style?

This is the way. Lasagne needs a leafy salad.

Side effect of raising countryside kids - I had to slow down yesterday driving my kid to a party to avoid running over a pheasant.

So the Green leadership, drunk on membership increases and polling bounce decided to indulge the poisonous hard left that were joining rather than stand up to them. A brand for environmental politics now taken over by the worst people. The MPs need to either purge them or remove themselves.

Ofcom should make one telecoms code change. That the person you call in a mobile help centre "must" be able to deal with all aspects of your case and act as case manager. They are then responsible for all inter-company interactions until the problem is solved with a simple fine structure by hour/day

I think if you want to set yourself up as being straight talking one of the fundamentals is saying the economy would be significantly better off if we went back into Europe. I also have a very non-poll view that people know it from their own experience and would quietly nod us back in.

Until we get Jim O'Neill to front it.

I did say to Labour in opposition that setting up a football regulator that means the government being responsible for who is allowed to run football clubs was going to get them into a terrible situation. This is a window into that.

The best play is absolutely to keep Richard E in until the very last three then say "well - he's a traitor, obviously". Spend your time whittling down the field and then finding the other traitors first. #thetraitors.

Social Democrats could peel away from Labour (and the Lib Dems).

Ian Moss @ian.allenmoss.co.uk · 02/10/2026
I also like the idea that "nationalists" can be left wing. I mean they are literally nationalists, whatever their social policy.
220
Ian Moss @ian.allenmoss.co.uk · 02/10/2026
Same. No way I'd want the Greens anywhere near power.
040
Ian Moss @ian.allenmoss.co.uk · 02/10/2026
I "love" that you are putting LD voters down as left wing.
110
Ian Moss @ian.allenmoss.co.uk · 02/10/2026
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opinion... I mean look at those polls in the run up to 1983. That doesn't scream to me that a PR result would end in anything other than a right wing government.
100
Ian Moss @ian.allenmoss.co.uk · 02/10/2026
Whut? Have you seen the polls e.g. recently.
100
Ian Moss @ian.allenmoss.co.uk · 02/10/2026
"Maybe" the voting system wouldn't actually change that much as it just forms the coalitions outside of the two main parties that end up replicating in office the governments of the two main parties.
110
Ian Moss @ian.allenmoss.co.uk · 02/10/2026
Whereas PR will, most likely in the UK, ensure a right/centre right majority in perpetuity. Maybe some left wing group gets some odd balance of power at some point and uses it for some fringe fancy.

Referendums can be binding. that Brexit was an advisory referendum was a choice.
000
Ian Moss @ian.allenmoss.co.uk · 02/10/2026
It's not an abrogation of responsibility it's a fundamental principle. Voters have to make the decision on how governments are elected. And manifesto isn't an answer.
100
Ian Moss @ian.allenmoss.co.uk · 02/10/2026
I think Reform are in favour no?
100
Ian Moss @ian.allenmoss.co.uk · 02/10/2026
Not least because we don't have a constitution and the law can be changed. But yes, as a matter of basic principle it's got to be a referendum. Anything else is trying to sneak it in.
110
Ian Moss @ian.allenmoss.co.uk · 02/10/2026
It's one of the things that absolutely has to be put to a referendum. Politicians don't get to decide how we elect them, that's for us.
210
Ian Moss @ian.allenmoss.co.uk · 02/10/2026
It was First Past the Post v not First Past the Post. People voted overwhelmingly for the status quo without caring what the alternative was. That's not to say they will again, but at the time there was little support for PR in a) the major parties and b) the Trade Unions. That's changed.

Still love the idea that the voters opposed AV because they were holding out for d'hondt.

Also the boundaries of continental Europe have been in flux for centuries and that must make some psychological difference.

It has to think harder about entitlements and ID cards. Benefits/health etc. and residential/contributary qualification

Free movement is wildly unpopular. I always find the "you can live and work abroad" argument hilariously narrow in its demograpgic appeal. My schoolmates in Stoke were not going to move out of Stoke, never mind to Croatia.

When I was in MoJ newspaper and blogging sites were locked down. I asked for access to newspapers and to the "prisoner blog" and was asked why I needed it. They couldn't do this, they could only switch the filter "on" or "off". I ended up being the only person in MoJ with the filter set to "off".

You do actually want policy officials reading about policy, not just press officers.
110
Ian Moss @ian.allenmoss.co.uk · 30/09/2026
Very much not. It’s completely different. In STV votes also transfer as fractions from those candidates above the quota. It only transfers as a whole vote from someone that is eliminated. AV only has whole votes from eliminated candidates until someone has 50% remaining valid votes.

I ‘definitely’ laid nerd seed with that comment

Ian Moss @ian.allenmoss.co.uk · 29/09/2026
If we are going to have a nerdy discussion about PR models I have to say my usual ‘STV has to have multi member seats by definition, otherwise it’s not STV, it’s AV’

Strong disagree on electoral reform. It’s the voters right to choose how they elect their leaders

Labour doesn’t get into power very often - so it needs to just get on with stuff. I think that’s where Andy’s head is.

By god it’s good to listen to someone in politics who actually has thought about some stuff and said it. Sure, as he said, we can disagree about some conclusions but he’s saying it because that’s the conclusion ‘he’ has reached.

I honestly think it is only journalists that care what manifestos said. In what sensible world is policy locked into the political and fiscal guesses of early 2024? Particularly when this; *gestures at world*. Manifestos should be seem as a broad positioning not some scientific textbook.
