Two of the best episodes from two of the best drama series ITV has shown, first broadcast exactly 10 years apart. The Sweeney's 'Hit and Run' on 29 September 1975, and this a decade later.

Some thoughts of mine on when pop opens the window and lets in a bit of welcome rain. Paul McCartney, Madonna, Gilbert O'Sullivan, Jason Donovan, Pet Shop Boys, Saint Etienne - these and others have all deployed a downpour, some successfully, some not. nearertotheend.co.uk/2026/09/28/t...

Wogan here saying "oh-oh-seven", and in 1981! This must be one of the last instances of such fusty pronunciation on national television.

Good on Cliff Michelmore for pulling out of the tour with Ed Sheeran. He'll have more time now to finish filming that motoring holiday in the Weald of Kent.

A few more pennies in royalties for Paul Weller - and timely ones, given The Style Council were just about to fall out of favour.

I’m fairly certain not. Seem to recall some seventies Bonds going out early afternoon last year with some Craigs in prime time. I don’t think they ever show anything but the Craig ones in prime time now.

The Man With The Golden Gun was on ITV1 this morning at 7am and Quantum of Solace is on ITV1 this evening at 8pm. Bond at breakfast time is bonkers; they must have cut the film to ribbons for it to be shown at that hour. But is this the first time the main ITV channel has shown two Bonds on one day?

Every once in a while I dig out Radio 1's glossy promotional brochure from the mid-90s ('The Schedule: As It Is') and remind myself of the station in peak Bannister-era swagger. From the mouth of which "attitudinal" DJ could these statements possibly have tumbled?
An "attitudinal" Radio 1 DJ holds forth about themselves.A Radio 1 DJ has got "something to express".A Radio 1 DJ believes in talking "about the real world".A Radio 1 DJ thinks they are "one of a dying breed".

This is fantastic news. It's easily my favourite of John Barry's Bond scores and it's the only one where he gets to be both witty and sophisticated. Put a glass against the side of my head and most days at some point you'd hear the opening bars of 'The Whyte House' circling round and round.

Bought myself the 1989 Christmas Radio Times as a present for myself, and spotted the premiere of ‘Crocodile’ Dundee (which still holds the record for the UK’s single biggest TV audience on any Christmas Day since Barb began reporting in 1981) was billed as a “special presentation”.
Some of the Radio Times billings for Christmas Day 1989, including ‘Crocodile’ Dundee with the inverted commas missing. The BBC treated us to a “special presentation” of ‘Crocodile’ Dundee in 1989 - presumably cut to ribbons.

Watching Tommy Cooper on the 1979 Parkinson Christmas special reminds me of how much I was terrified by him (Cooper, not Parky) as a young child. There was something quite brutish about his huge frame, gruff patter and missing teeth. I flinched every time he loomed at the camera.

John Cleese moaning (again) in an undignified way about the BBC reminds me of the way Terry Wogan moaned (again and again) in an undignified way about the BBC for about 15 years. With Wogan it was worse, however, as he moaned about the BBC while at the same time taking money for working at the BBC.

It's October 1987 and Q magazine has categorised helpfully the celebrities du jour. There's good news for Ben Curiosity, Bill Wyman and Lindas Davidson and Lusardi; less good news for Chris Quentin, Belouis Some and "sundry" Curiosities. First reserves include Nino Firetto and Gary Glitter.

While we're celebrating 40 years of Howards' Way, let's also commemorate the faltering evolution of the typeface used during the opening titles, which progressed series by series from slap-this-on-anything to bespoke-ritzy.
The typeface used for the first series of Howards' Way: from the drawer marked "municipal/functional".The series two typeface: a bit snazzy but a no-nonsense blue. The series three typeface: we've discovered block capitals and drop-shadows.By series four the typeface, like Jack and Avril's boatyard, has been dragged into the 1980s.

40 years ago today, I began keeping a daily diary. The first entries are rather prosaic, but a) I was only nine and b) at the time I didn't know I'd carry on. But I did - and I never stopped. (The names of the days are in Cornish; they were printed in a different language each week. Very recherché).
The first two entries in my first daily diary, for August 30 and August 31 1985. I have kept a diary ever since.
