My latest column is up, after a rewrite following Trump's decision yesterday. Now, by Executive Order, the government has renamed AI as Super Intelligence and the industry will not be regulated, except by itself. Which has always worked out well historically...

AI companies are getting vocal about the need to slow down and get regulated, writes Iain Thomson from San Francisco, and they got exactly what they were after

We had a lot of fun on this, and the title refers to Google's Project Suncatcher - a "datacenter" that has just four TPU chips. Each TPU will require 1.3m2 of radiators to cool it. Keeping things chilled in space is very hard and, barring new technology, big datacenters in space are unsupportable.

Woke up to a Nixle alert for San Francisco - a mountain lion has been spotted near 44th and Ulloa. The cat distribution system is a thing, but please don't do "Who's a big growly kitty then? Do you want snuggles and food?" That would be followed by "Aaaagh!" Plus, think of the litter box issues.

Dreamforce registration sums up the privacy/usability debate rather nicely. On the one hand, simply glancing at a tablet gets you signed in, more quickly than I've ever had at the Moscone. On the other hand, a single glance gets you IDed instantly.

The second best thing about donating blood - having the medic tell you to avoid exercise for the next 24 hours. Seriously folks, please donate. There's a chronic shortage in the US, particularly for O- and AB-. Your body replaces it quickly, and it takes 30 minutes tops for a bag of whole blood.
Blood donation - please give.

Was at JPL 14 years ago for the Curiosity landing - it was a great night. When the first pictures came in I broke the cardinal rule and clapped at a press confernece. After it was finished at around 1am a couple of French journos bought out a bottle of champagne and we toasted the rover's success.

It's been 50 years since the first successful landing on Mars. Mankind will get there, one day. It does make sense not to have humanity's eggs in one basket but anyone born on Mars is going to find Earth's gravity impossible to deal with. But it's likely there is life there. Roll David Bowie.
