A weird #gemedev thing I had to do yesterday - I spent the day measuring colours and spacing on old Teletext screens. Like, I had the colours but it didn't feel like actual Teletext. I want my world to be stuck in this "proto-internet" space.

QTeletextMaker v1.0 released. The Level 2.5 #teletext editor has always been compilable on Linux but it's now downloadable as an AppImage too. From github.com/gkthemac/QTe... where the usual Windows exe within a zip can also be found (mind the SmartScreen warnings!).

this was WAY easier 25 years ago when i was a kid and friends just ran personal BBSes on servers they ran themselves and wasnt broken up into 140-300 character blasts that encourage term-crawling randos to swoop in and score Cool Kid Points as some sort of infantile exercise in cyberpraxis for goofs

Upgraded the #Meshcore radio today. Went from a RAK 1W to a custom seed 1W. Also replaced the 10KmAh battery for three 21700s. I hope I survive the big dark.

Voice upgrade. Breeze TTS 2 is very good. Set up a bridge between Sub/Wave (server) and Breeze (running on a pc previously set up for gaming) with hard-coded voice settings. It takes 3x as long as Kokoro running in the same container, but since it's got 3-5 minutes (song) it isn't noticeable.

Over the weekend, I split up some inference over my potato M1 Mac Mini 16 GB and 9070 XT powered PC to make Sub/Wave entirely self hosted. Gemma 4 E4B is surprisingly great at writing the DJ scripts, and Breeze TTS 2 is mind-blowing-ly good at TTS. Sure it could be faster via API...

The Unicode encoding of a star is different from the US-ASCII encoding in Dingbats! They look the same to your eyeball, but not to the computer that's deciding what it's going to display/read out loud.
