While I was working on my diploma thesis, I wrote four papers in one year, three of them as first author. While this might sound impressive for someone not having even started a PhD, I wasn't happy with it. It felt shallow, and I didn't have the impression that I was meaningfully helping to […]

This affects when someone on your Nextcloud instance is sharing a folder with your account. Anonymous URL shares don't seem to work at all with nextcloudcmd. My workaround, in case someone else gets bitten by this: Log into your Nextcloud instance and open the shared folder in the web interface […]

Dear @nextcloud, it would be terrific if you could point nextcloudcmd to the URL of a shared folder and you didn't have to manually mess around with the --path argument. #nextcloud

@tomstafford @giorgiogilestro Good ideas are still a scarce resource and LLMs don't really help with that. While we don't need more write-only papers, we would certainly benefit from having better ideas.

I am reading the #KIDSAct and oh my is it bad. It is so dumb I have no words. And if adopted as proposed, it will have devastating effects for the #Fediverse and #FOSS app distribution. In particular, it will undo anything good the #DigitalMarketsAct might have achieved there. And it definitely […]

@defnull @rstockm It's pretty much unavoidable that metrics on social media are heavy-tailed, meaning they are sensitive to single events. You will always have some most viral posting in your posting history.

Talking about AI today at the DFG SPP Combinatorial Synergies annual conference and I just had to put one of my all time favourite comic strips in. This one panel contains so much. It's 'deep' as we would say in #math.
The comic "Schatz" by Joscha sauer: Pirates find empty treasure chest.
“If you are now wondering where the great
treasure is, then look deep inside yourself and
you will find that it is the friendships and the
experiences you gathered on the long search.”
Whoa! · So beautiful! · Better than gold (struck-out) finite
time blowup for Navier–Stokes.

@tomkalei My impression is that when these big problems were put up, the idea was that solving them would probably require new deep insights that would also be of use in countless other situations. I'm by no means an expert in this, but as far as I know, this view holds reasonably well for the […]

@tomkalei What makes you sure that it's not exploiting a bug in the proof assistant? Naively, I would expect that there is a threshold when theorems are so hard to prove that it's statistically more likely to be an exploit rather than an actual result. Kind of an AI version of "Why Most […]

@ditsch42 If it's from 2019, it's very likely that it has unpatched firmware vulnerabilities because the vendor has stopped caring about that generation a long time ago. If we are talking about the Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 in the Fairphone 3, the last firmware update appears to be from 2020. And […]
