I was a little shocked to see the Wildfire in the New Forest from my daily photo spot. When I was a kid they used to burn the fields after the harvest, but I've not seen anything like this on the horizon before.

I very much enjoyed the Matt Dinniman & Jeff Hays event last night in London. I did not enjoy having to leave a packed theatre at 23.00 - mid performance - because SWR has decided the last train service is now at 23:35. Nothing like getting mocked from the stage AND by the audience. BYEEEE 👋

Today is #Wallerfest 2026 - where we @endjin.com are coming together to remember & celebrate our beloved colleague, our very first employee, Paul Waller, who died from Motor Neurone Disease 1 year ago today. His passing was sudden and unexpected, and shocked all of us. We miss him every day.

Paul Waller (AKA crashbangwaller) - endjin's 1st employee and creative powerhouse. Died suddenly on 27th February 2025 from Motor Neurone Disease.

Absolutely loving Wonder Man. It's up there with Loki. Sir Ben Kingsley is obviously having an absolute blast playing Trevor Slattery again. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is great. Marvel content always shines when they focus on the characters and everything fantastical is just the context to explore them.

It's time for my favourite blog post of the year - the annual performance benchmark of our .NET based AIS (Automatic Identification System) - Marine Vessel Telemetry - parsing library. Every vessel over a certain size has to transmit information (name, location, status, direction etc).

Here you go. I hope it posts in order. The C code is embedded in EBPF to run in the kernel. They then use wireguard to manage the connections and route between instances with the same network id. It's very, simple, and very clever

Utterly exhausted after hosting the family on Boxing Day. Followed the Fallow Turkey recipe (brine, butcher, bacon + legs + stuffing). Also Meat Merchant Sugat Pit Bacon Rack. Absolutely awesome. Looking forward to a lazy day of recovery.

Excellent "all you can eat" Thanksgiving Dinner at Texas Joes last night. Probably the first time I truly got the "being thankful for" bit, as shortly after last year's dinner my friend was diagnosed with a brain tumour. He's fully recovered now. So much can happen in a short time.

Was in London yesterday - intending to go to Big Data LDN, but the rain meant I ended up working from a pub in the afternoon, then went to see Mike Birbiglia's The Old Man and The Pool - which was excellent. It's on for the next two weeks. Go see if you want to laugh solidly for 90 mins!
