Slowly trying to data collect Wolves sets to begin the season. Lot of the same stagger based half-court stuff, working with secondary guys from the corners. Lot of the same SLOB sets to. Some new stuff though, just going to need to see consistency before I get to detailing.

Joan Beringer defensive activity vs Miami in the Timberwolves third game of the preseason...

Disappointing to see TJ Shannon rely on his left hand, have a loose handle, and make defensive miscues in a preseason game that featured no starters.

Jonah Maves @hunchojman.bsky.social · 16h

Good activity from Joan Beringer to slide over to Pelle Larsson but not launch himself at the drive. Turns his head on the dump off and gets a deflection.

010

Jonah Maves @hunchojman.bsky.social · 16h

Come for Jaylen Clark defensive instincts, stick around for Bones Hyland having the audacity to throw him a lob?

2120

Jonah Maves @hunchojman.bsky.social · 17h

A pair of poor defensive possessions in isolation from Isaiah Evans. Very limited physicality and resistance against two Pelle Larsson drives on back-to-back possessions.

Jonah Maves @hunchojman.bsky.social · 17h

Stagger Get, flowing into another pindown and Get for Zyon Pullin. Great read from Pullin to skip it across and create a 3 on 2. Complete ball reversal gets Isaiah Evans a corner three.

Subtle, but I like to see this type of stuff from Joan Beringer. Really like to see the second-side pitch back, blind pig type action. Then the short roll drive and kick out. Flashes, but I really want to see more of the multifaceted modern big offense develop.

‪I understand some hesitancy, he loves to seek out his shot, but you just have to live with the chaos.‬ ‪His improvement as a willing defender and much improve inside the arc scorer even if he struggles to pressure the rim was huge, can still touch paint.‬

It was a backup/reserve game, however 23 PTS on 6/9 from the field, 5/6 from three, and 6/6 at the free throw line, on top of 4 AST and 0 TO’s from Bones Hyland just has to mean something… Especially after what we saw with some ball handling lineup struggles last game our.

2nd place finish for Olivia Miles in MVP in her Rookie season. 6 1st place votes too. 442 total points behind A’ja’s 713.

I do like the offense a lot. There is a lot more room for players to operate with them using multiple screeners and Julius being out of the picture. Just really curious on how they align the subs.

Great night from Ant and Melo. Meh performances from Kuminga, Dosunmu, Beringer, Clark. Team is still figuring out some lineup stuff. Need consistent ball handlers out there. Starters vs bench balance is gonna be interesting.

Y3 for TJ Shannon and he still has not figured out how to decel, euro, or control himself on drives.

Just in awe of LaMelo Ball's passing creativity. Rescreen through Gobert to shake off Nembhard, windmill gather around Haliburton's dig, dotting it to Jaden McDaniels in the corner in the process. This franchise has never had a PG of this caliber...

Solid defensive rep from Cody Williams. Pinches to Ivica Zubac. Jonathan Kuminga slides to cover the spray out, good x-out to force a Pascal Siakam travel.

030

Jonah Maves @hunchojman.bsky.social · 08/10/2026

Keeping an eye on the Wolves continuing to use more Wings/Forwards as screeners. No DiVincenzo or Conley takes away the ghost screen capabilities, using the others as rollers adds a different layer. Limited success so far but I see the vision.

Great find from LaMelo Ball to TJ Shannon on the corner three. These type of vision finds mixed with LaMelo's size are so fun to see flash early.

This Pacers half-court pressure against the Wolves lineup of TJ Shannon - Jaylen Clark - Ayo Dosunmu as primary ball handlers is a good test.

Time is running out on TJ Shannon. As he now enters his age-26 season, he is going to need to produce. Injuries and inconsistency has set him back, but if he cannot prove himself as a rotational player for the Wolves this season, when can he? More below.

Intrigued with the early offense, Jaden McDaniels wide pin down flowing into PnR ball-handler reps. Some flashes of that in the 1H vs Milwaukee.

080

Jonah Maves @hunchojman.bsky.social · 06/10/2026

Subtle detail, but I liked to see the attention to detail with LaMelo's bounce pass to Gobert here.

Jonah Maves @hunchojman.bsky.social · 06/10/2026

Some fun offensive chops from Jaden McDaniels in the 2Q vs Milwaukee. - Sliding up from the corner for a PnR ball handler rep, good chemistry and pacing with Gobert on the screen. Floating bank drive. - Zoom action through Kuminga and Gobert, fly by, cans the triple.

NAZ REID MAY BE GONE BUT THE FREE MONEY GLITCH OPENING QUARTER ATO IS BACKKKKKKKKKKK Jaden McDaniels steps into the roller spot in the absence of his pal Nazreon.

This LaMelo Ball 1Q hockey assist vs Milwaukee really painted the picture of his size/passing intersection, and how exciting of an addition it is.

Spain type look here for LaMelo Ball w/ Joan Beringer rolling and Trey Lyles flaring out. Not the cleanest. LaMelo gets the switch onto Jericho Sims and goes to work...

010

Jonah Maves @hunchojman.bsky.social · 06/10/2026

This is exactly what we envisioned in a LaMelo Ball - Anthony Edwards freelance pairing. LaMelo draws KPJ out with a deep fake, drives the gap, Jaime Jaquez helps off the strong-side corner, Ant drills the three.

0110

Jonah Maves @hunchojman.bsky.social · 06/10/2026

Here is a good example of LaMelo as the low tagger. Double drag for Tyler Herro, Kyle Kuzma rolls, LaMelo tags, spins off of it, and still gets a solid contest despite being in the paint when Ryan Rollins catches the kickout.

020

Jonah Maves @hunchojman.bsky.social · 06/10/2026

Beringer’s lineup combinations should be interesting for this exact reason. When he switches, the gang rebounding is going to need to pop. Have to think he plays with LaMelo and Kuminga a lot just for positional size and relative rebound rate.

050

Jonah Maves @hunchojman.bsky.social · 06/10/2026

Trey Lyles or anyone else did not help out, but there was some real shaky DREB in Joan Beringer’s first unit vs Milwaukee. Wrote about it last week, it’s an area that really need to improve. However some can be credited to him being switched out more frequently.

030

Jonah Maves @hunchojman.bsky.social · 06/10/2026

On ball, I think Conley is missed, but overall, LaMelo in the corner tagger/spray out to the corner to contest role is really fun to see so far, just so so so much larger and much better ground coverage.

160

Jonah Maves @hunchojman.bsky.social · 06/10/2026

The tradeoff between Mike Conley’s great defense and shot contest, but very short stature that can be picked on. Compared to LaMelo Ball’s drastically larger frame, with decreased instinct/positioning should be really interesting to track this season.

Can’t act like Liv is off the hook. Deeply disappointing series, but I guess I just did not expect anything great given her regular season tape vs NYL.

060

Jonah Maves @hunchojman.bsky.social · 30/09/2026

Looking at the roster build. Having Liv is such a luxury lol. Lingering KMac + Court flaws stood in the playoffs which should be interesting moving into next year. Bench needs to be better too. Flash and Nia capped out. Nia was great, but Flash was not enough vs NY.
