We are all chained in one way or another -- It is your privilege that dictates how much you suffer. For some, the chains are invisible and unknown; For others, the chains are wrapped around our throats. Poem by me Sabrina Penguin @HumdingerDarling “Late Stage Capitalism”
Photo of a woman wearing a white slip with metal chains around her throat. With bloody knuckles, she grips the chain around her throat. Her poem is written in a dark area of the photo.
We are all chained
in one way or another
It is your privilege
that dictates how much you suffer
For some, the chains are
   invisible and unknown
for others, the chains are
  wrapped around our throats

Poverty is a policy choice. Concentrated wealth is a policy choice. Inequality is a policy choice. None of it is natural or inevitable. Remember: We have the power to build a system that serves the many, not the powerful few.

From a poem I wrote years ago that remains relevant today: The power it takes to rise again...
Heavily edited photo by Sabrina Penguin of her shadow standing tall in front of a bright window. Peach, orange , green, brown. Poem written on the photo says: the power it takes to rise again after being beaten down is a strength some will never know, one that sets her apart from the crowd. It is that strength that's often sought - a light she holds within, sadly, not everyone can understand that she would just give it to them. They need and try to take it or extinguish how she cares because the truth of her light is it is brightest when it shared. By Sabrina Penguin aka humdingerdarling

Homeless in Maryland -- I dress in chains to show our oppression and in red to show the blood on their hands 💔

Don’t let them scare you. Don’t let them get you to give up hope. This is what they want more than anything. Their evil is never more alive than when we sleep.

It is reasonable to be sad or angry about what is happening. Allowing yourself to feel emotion and understanding those emotions can give you information. Feelings do not control you, but you can use them to guide you if you let yourself tune in! You are not alone. 💙 (2/2)

I'm trying to hold my head up while the US government violently attacks me - as a homeless mother of two chronically sick kids. It is a war against the poor and marginalized groups. But, thankfully, I understand that THERE IS NO SHAME IN FEELING YOUR FEELINGS. (1/2)

When the world is dark, be light - for yourself & others. Take care of yourself. Donate resources to shelters & blessing boxes. Put banned books in Little Libraries. Speak up. Talk to people about what's going on. Volunteer your talents & time to nonprofits. Seek joy. Do not give up. 💙🩵

When words do not match actions, it is called gaslighting - an insidious form of mental abuse that involves manipulating someone into questioning their own reality or perceptions, often leading them to doubt reality, their sanity, or their memories. But, WE ARE NOT POWERLESS to overcome.

Traumatized, no doubt. I was sick to my stomach with worry about how I'll afford my two children's medications without help. If anyone reading this is hiring for a job that pays a livable wage, I'd love to be able to live on my own terms. Currently homeless, so I'm available for remote work only.

What are your key takeaways from what was discussed? How do you anticipate the bill impacting the homeless and impoverished in our country?

I won't let the world forget. I live with the knowledge that my ancestors are in history books, proud that they founded two towns in New England. Raised to believe it was a good thing, not questioning how it came to be. Now, older / wiser, I'll fight to right those wrongs til I have no fight left.

No denying they are evil, but it's inaccurate to say this country has never seen this level of evil; the United States was founded by colonists who violated and murdered Indigenous people, then stole their land.

It's working. I feel panicked. As an unhoused single mom to two chronically sick kids, Medicaid (the only federal program that we utilize) helps me keep my kids alive.
