What you're seeing is a combination of people who think they critically think at a much higher level than they actually are, and then overgeneralizing the expected Dunning-Kruger effect into AI doom for everyone. It's first and foremost overconfident arrogance to avoid a humbling shame.

"I want to emphasize once again that critical thinking is directly related to how and why we use AI. Do you have that capacity? If so, Al becomes not a vampire feeding on your psyche or a means of escapism, but a tool for solving real problems." sergeykleftzov.medium.com/if-youre-sma...

Thanks, @k4rlos.bsky.social, for being exactly an example of how both sides of nearly everything is very much a part of the bigger problems we face and why any progress that's achieved is done so at a crawl and largely due to bias-led coincidence rather than competence.

Producing the first edition of an ebook/audiobook I had been thinking about for a VERY long time. With my direction and refinements, it's mostly written by the Humble Self-Concept Method GPT (hence calling myself a "Producer" instead of author), but the 2nd Edition will be handwritten.

John Oliver's recent episode on AI Chatbots missed the mark for me. There’s a growing group of people using chatbots as a form of first-aid for mental health support. Their stories deserve a place in the conversation too. My latest piece in Techdirt: www.techdirt.com/2026/05/18/w...

We Need A More Serious Discussion About Suicide And AI Chatbots

I'm sure this one will be controversial, but @jmiers230.bsky.social has been deeply researching the issue of suicide and AI chatbots and makes a compelling argument that the discussion on it is (perhaps dangerously) wrong.

He then goes on to suggest that chatbots should just throw the 988 number at any sign of crisis. If his team did their research, they would know that 988 isn't the best resource for every situation and that flashing it at the wrong time can actually worsen crisis.

Oliver seemed more in favor of option 2: exit the marketplace. That will result in two things: (1) the millions of people who are currently using chatbots for support (many of which have prevented suicides) will lose access to these tools. And (2) OpenAI and Google will continue to dominate.

That was especially disappointing given that John Oliver had a prior episode all about the challenges of content moderation. He knows just how difficult this problem is. Content moderation challenges are just as real for chatbots as they are in the social media context.

And by doing so, it detracts from the growing research that shows that technology plays a crucial role in *preventing* suicide. And it further distracts from the risk factors that actually do contribute to suicide, all of which are societal problems we need to address.

I'm sorry but you don't get to make sweeping allegations about chatbots causing suicide and then wrap it all up in a bow by flashing the 988 number at the end. That's not how you responsibly talk about suicide or any of these cases.

I've received a few replies about how the segment wasn't meant to be about suicide (so they didn't need to get the nuance right). Suicide isn't a throwaway topic though. That's my point. If they didn't have the time to do the subject justice, they should have saved it for its own segment.

sure, makes sense, I guess, taken on its face, but counterpoint: maybe as a society we should try much harder to take some of the TRILLIONS being spent on AI and spend it on making life better for people so they don't need therapists, and also on training and paying more human therapists

Sorry to say this, but it was 100% his psychology, he didn't have enough consistent healthy self-skepticism, & what caused him to refuse to listen to reason was the same psychological issues we see with those who take loyalty to their own reasoning above intellectual integrity. Not an "ideal" user.

The only way toward revealing potential and reaching for the progress it allows is not to have a balanced view for the sake of touting yourself as having a balanced view, but to have as many variables to consider (& reconsider) as they're observed. This is exactly the means to a more balanced view.

People get "dumber" on average because most people are in the bottom 2 of 6 stages of critical thinking development. AI accelerates the trajectory you're on between either settling on low critical thinking skill or never settling your entire life. Have to be a high enough level to mitigate it.

When it comes to effective good faith, it takes enough practice to make it second nature when calm. Then is the challenge of practicing it in an emotionally flooded/aroused state. It's very hard, but doable. Stoicism can't prevent flooding on its own. youtu.be/0xS68sl2D70?...

The Humble Self-Concept Method now has 10 steps covering Self-Discovery -> Self-Transformation -> Self‑Transcendence. Here's a simulated Step 1 if it were done by Trump & Harris. The answers shouldn't be surprising. We need more of one type of person, and less of the other.

ADHD is often described as giving a person an "interest based nervous system." I'd argue that in the world where everything we think, say, & do is our path of least resistance, ADHDers simply have more opportunities to avoid/rationalize away behavior changing pain points. Hardwired fight or flight.

Self-compassion isn't as simple as "take control of the situation and do what has to be done." That foregos understanding why you really deserve to do what's best for yourself. If you're doing it for validation via conditional standards, pride derived from it is conditional and easily threatened.

One benefit of being truly open-minded in a world that doesn't know what it means nor takes to be so is that you can fairly entertain any idea without biases nor covert manipulation of your rational intelligence. Con: Those who do not have this trait will resent you & deny their resentment for it.
