CHICAGO, , ILLINOIS,, USA. — The Great Chicago Fire was a devastating blaze that began on the evening of Sunday, October 8, 1871. Rumours abound that it was started when a cow in a shed kicked over a lantern, but a reporter for the Chicago Republican later admitted to making up the story. How the fire really began remains unknown. The post October 8, 1871: The Great Chicago Fire begins appeared first on VicNews.

Why I Refuse to See My Disability as a Barrier
From $100k loss to mortgage freedom Ross contracted Guillain-Barré syndrome at 2.5 years old and was told by doctors he had weeks to live. His mother, a nurse, refused to accept that prognosis. Growing up with crutches in 1970s Sydney, he learned early that disability wasn't the barrier; low expectations were. He sold pens on Legacy Day at 15 and discovered he had a gift for salesmanship and making people trust him. That led to real estate, then property management. By 30 he'd built a business worth over $1 million and paid off his mortgage with a single cheque. When banking collapsed in 2016, he pivoted to advising not-for-profits in the disability space, work he still does today. Now in his 50s, he speaks publicly about why disabled employees are undervalued assets and how accessibility benefits everyone. Ross Chaplin is a property and disability sector advisor based in Sydney who has lived with Guillain-Barré syndrome since age 2.5, leaving him with significant paralysis but unshakeable drive. He built and sold a residential property management business, paid off his mortgage in full at 30, and now works across not-for-profit disability organisations and sits on paid and voluntary board positions in the sector. In this Golden Threads conversation with Daniel Dougherty, Ross shares the story behind the moments below. 🎙️ IN THIS CONVERSATION: • Disability forced him to think laterally about problems early; now he recognises this as a competitive asset in hiring and problem-solving. • His father's pragmatism ('you have to be better than the rest') proved more useful than his mother's protective doubts; external pressure can motivate or constrain depending on how it's framed. • Failure at $150k in debt was the catalyst to reinvention, not the end; desperation removed the luxury of hesitation. 🕒 CHAPTERS: 00:00 Why disability doesn't stop greatness 05:49 A mother refuses the diagnosis 07:40 His father's pragmatic lesson 10:31 The Legacy Day pen sale that changed everything 14:49 The $100k loss and the wedding two months away 16:20 A number plate and a business is born 20:10 Accessibility then and now 27:47 Why disabled employees are a hidden asset 32:48 The privilege of visible disability 34:48 The AICD step test 36:52 His closing message to listeners 38:08 Fail at what you can't do. We're glad you found your way here. Kintsugi Heroes was created from a simple belief: every person has a story worth sharing, and sometimes the story we need to hear arrives exactly when we need it most. Our name comes from the Japanese art of Kintsugi, where broken pottery is repaired with gold. Rather than hiding the cracks, they are honoured as part of the object's history. We believe people are much the same. The experiences that challenge us, break us, shape us, and help us grow are often the very things that connect us to one another. This channel is home to honest conversations about resilience, hope, grief, recovery, courage, love, and what it means to keep moving forward when life doesn't go to plan. Here you'll find six podcast series, each sharing stories through a different lens: • Kintsugi Heroes, hosted by John Milham • Animals & Us, hosted by Natalie Stockdale • Grit Diaries: From Grit to Grace, hosted by Simone Allan and Maryan Bova • From There to Here, hosted by Emma Bellamy-Dodd • Golden Threads: Stories of Disability & Resilience • Pride in Stories, hosted by John Dwyer Every story shared here is offered with the hope that it helps someone feel a little less alone. A little more understood. A little more connected. Whether you're navigating a difficult season, supporting someone you love, or simply looking for meaningful conversations, you're welcome here. New episodes are released fortnightly across our series. If you'd like to help us keep these stories freely available to everyone, you can support our work here: https://www.kintsugiheroes.com.au/donate Thank you for being part of this community. How to Build Unshakeable Confidence and Silence Your Inner Critic with Dr Cindra Kamphoff
How do you build confidence when the voice in your head keeps telling you that you’re not good enough? In this episode, Osher Gunsberg is joined by performance psychologist and mental performance coach Dr Cindra Kamphoff, author of 'The Confidence Habit' and executive performance coach to some of the world's most successful athletes, to explore why even highly successful people can struggle with self-doubt, harsh self-talk and the fear of making mistakes. Cindra has worked with NFL players and members of the U.S. track and field team, helping them develop the mental skills to perform under pressure. But the lessons she shares aren't just for athletes—they're for anyone who has ever questioned themselves, replayed a mistake or felt like they should be doing better. Cindra explores the difference between our “inner critic” and our “inner coach”, and how learning to recognise and challenge negative thoughts can fundamentally change the way we see ourselves. She also shares practical tools for dealing with self-doubt, including her “truth meter” and three questions designed to help determine whether the stories we tell ourselves are actually true. She also explains why confidence isn't something you're simply born with, but a skill that can be developed, and how to recover from mistakes without allowing them to define your next performance, using her powerful “learn, burn, return” approach. From changing negative self-talk to letting go of past failures and learning to trust yourself, this is a practical conversation about turning self-doubt into self-belief and developing the confidence to move forward—even when you don't feel confident. *Links:* ▪️Get 'The Confidence Habit' and bonus resources: https://www.confidencetools.com ▪️More from Cindra: https://cindrakamphoff.com/ ▪️Follow Cindra on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cindrakamphoff *More from Osher:* 🎙 Better Than Yesterday podcast: https://tinyurl.com/BTYpodcast 📬 Sign up to the Better Than Yesterday newsletter: https://makeitbetterthanyesterday.kit.com/7d9d18dcee 📸 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/osher_gunsberg 📖 Books: https://linktr.ee/osher_gunsberg 📺 Story Club on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@storyclublive 🎟️ Story Club tickets: https://linktr.ee/osher_gunsberg 00:00:00 Mindset in High-Level Athletics 00:03:22 Is Confidence Inherent or Developed? 00:06:01 Defining the 4 Pillars of Confidence 00:07:40 Managing High Pressure in the NFL 00:11:22 Past, Present, and Future Mindsets 00:13:26 The "Learn, Burn, Return" Strategy 00:18:20 Action Precedes Confident Feelings 00:20:44 Alter Egos and Pretending Confidence 00:24:32 Confidence Versus Arrogance 00:26:12 Taming the Inner Critic with Truth 00:31:33 Words that Build or Break Confidence 00:33:48 Process Goals vs. Outcome Goals 00:37:31 Supporting the Confidence of Young Adults 00:42:00 Practical Tools for Everyday Self-Belief #podcast #betterthanyesterday #oshergunsberg #selfimprovement

You can spend years working in criminal law and still be reminded that people are rarely as simple as the allegations against them. Ffyona Campbell (Audio): The Sisters of Mercy: Hidden Abuse Behind a 20,000-Mile Walk
David Jones and Dr Naomi Murphy speak with Ffyona Campbell about her memoir ‘In Black and White’, which recounts the abuse  she experienced as a child at the Sisters of Mercy convent boarding school in Midhurst, and the decades-long process of recovering those memories. The conversation explores her efforts to tell her story, find other survivors, and describes the psychological manipulation she says took place at the school. This is a difficult but important discussion about trauma, memory, and the search for justice. Ffyona, known for her walks across Africa and the USA, also reflects on the girls who offered her support, her life after recovering memories, and why speaking out matters to her. https://www.amazon.co.uk/stores/author/B09RG9VKHG https://www.wildfoodwalks.co.uk/ Key topics Ffyona discusses In Black and White, her memoir about being a junior boarder at Midhurst from age eight, and why she wrote it. She describes a memory-recall process that brought back memories of abuse, and the difficulties she says followed when she tried to report it. The conversation focuses on the “black and white” room, which Ffyona says was altered to confuse and condition children before abuse. She recounts how changes to the room, courtyard, curtains, and furniture contributed to what she describes as a deliberate system of psychological manipulation. Ffyona remembers George, an older girl who recognized that the nuns were “messing with our minds,” and whose resistance helped spark rebellion among the girls. She recalls Grania, who gave her a tiny red crayon, as a rare source of kindness and solidarity. Ffyona reflects on a painful incident involving her sister and why she no longer blames herself for it. She discusses why some survivors find the book difficult to read and the challenges she sees in seeking justice without more corroborating testimony. Ffyona says she has medical evidence of injuries she believes are consistent with abuse, and raises questions about the Sisters of Mercy’s financial records and assets. She calls for scrutiny of the Sisters of Mercy and a wider network of religious institutions, and says she hopes survivors will know they are not alone. Community Question: Mediation or Manipulation? The Hidden Truth About Family Law Negotiations
In this powerful and deeply practical episode of Dear Divorce Diary, Darren Mort and Joplin Higgins unpack one of the most misunderstood parts of the family law system — mediation. After receiving a flood of listener messages and social media comments, Darren and Jop dive into the reality of Family Dispute Resolution (FDR), court-ordered mediation, shuttle negotiations, coercive control during mediation, and whether the system is genuinely helping separating families — or simply creating another layer of trauma. From unsafe mediation experiences to “tick-box” certificates, legally assisted negotiations, family violence dynamics, and the emotional pressure placed on victim survivors, this episode delivers a brutally honest look at what really happens behind closed doors in family law negotiations. Are Family Law Mediations Actually Safe? The episode begins with a confronting listener message from a woman who says she felt deeply unsafe during a shuttle mediation — despite being physically separated from her former partner. Darren and Joplin explore: Why “safe” in legal terms can feel very different emotionally for victim survivors The hidden trauma of mediation environments How coercive control can continue during negotiations — even without direct contact Why some victim survivors feel pressured into agreements The “Tick Box” Problem in Family Law One of the biggest discussion points is the criticism of mediation certificates under Section 60I of the Family Law Act. The hosts discuss: Whether some mediations have become procedural hurdles rather than genuine negotiations Concerns that some parties attend mediation in bad faith Why some mediators fail to identify abusive or manipulative behaviour The frustration of receiving the same certificate as a party who engaged respectfully Joplin raises concerns about: Inexperienced mediators Delays in government-funded mediation services Lack of legal understanding from some facilitators The risks this creates in family violence matters When Mediation Becomes Another Form of Control This episode takes a powerful turn as Darren and Jop discuss how: Refusing to attend mediation Deliberately withholding financial documents Failing to negotiate genuinely Creating delays …can become extensions of coercive and controlling behaviour. The conversation examines: Power imbalances in negotiations How emotional abuse can continue through legal processes The psychological impact of prolonged proceedings Why some cases are simply “not settleable” Legally Assisted Mediation vs Government Services Darren and Jop openly compare: Private mediation services Government-funded FDR programs Court-based mediation Child-inclusive conferences Registrar-led negotiations They discuss why: The skill and experience of the mediator matters enormously Family law knowledge is critical in parenting disputes Cheap mediation can sometimes become expensive later Good mediation requires preparation, realism, and strategy Key Topics Covered Family Dispute Resolution (FDR) Section 60I certificates Coercive control in mediation Shuttle mediation Victim survivor safety Family violence and negotiation Court-ordered mediation Parenting disputes Child-inclusive mediation Litigation fatigue Power imbalances in family law Reality testing in negotiations Mediation strategies Trauma-informed legal practice “Some cases are not settleable.” Darren and Jop discuss why forcing compromise in high-conflict or family violence matters can sometimes create more harm than good. “You get what you pay for.” Joplin delivers a candid assessment of under-resourced mediation services and why legal expertise matters during negotiations. This video explains how smartphones may shape personality by changing our tolerance for boredom, uncertainty, silence, loneliness, emotional discomfort and the need to be seen. Most discussions about phones focus on screen time, distraction or dopamine. But the deeper psychological question is this: what is the phone training us to avoid? In this video, Dr Sanil Rege explores how smartphones interact with personality development, emotional regulation, attention, boredom tolerance, uncertainty, intimacy, identity and self-worth. Rather than arguing that phones are simply “bad”, this video examines the psychological loop underneath: stimulation, discomfort, avoidance, reward and repetition. The key idea is that personality is not fixed — it is organised through repeated patterns of perception, emotion, prediction, regulation and behaviour. When the phone repeatedly enters the exact moments where the self is meant to practise waiting, wondering, reflecting, mentalising, tolerating uncertainty and sitting with emotional discomfort, it may begin to reshape the thresholds through which personality is expressed. This is especially relevant for children, adolescents and emerging adults aged 18–25, when identity, intimacy, autonomy, emotional regulation, sexuality, ambition, loneliness and self-worth are still developing and consolidating. CHAPTERS 00:00 – Is your phone changing your personality? 02:30 – Personality is not fixed — it is organised 04:20 – The prefrontal cortex, limbic system and emotional regulation 05:04 – What is maturity, and how does the phone influence that? 07:21 – The phone as an emotional regulation device 09:45 – Boredom, the default mode network and self-development 12:20 – The addictive loop: uncertainty, checking and relief 14:02 – Children, development and smartphones 14:56 – Nomophobia and dependence on the phone as a regulator KEY EDUCATIONAL POINTS For general viewers: - Your phone may not create a completely new personality, but it may shape what becomes easier or harder for you to tolerate: boredom, waiting, uncertainty, loneliness, silence and not being seen. For clinicians: -The clinical issue is not only screen exposure or screen time. The deeper formulation question is: what psychological function is the phone serving? Is it regulating boredom, loneliness, shame, anxiety, exclusion, uncertainty, or self-worth? For parents and young adults: -The concern is not simply that phones distract young people. The concern is developmental displacement: what is not being practised because the phone is always available?
