Socratic APIs: The Skill-Free Agent Architecture
MCP needs a server per service. Skills go stale and blow up your context. Socratic APIs teach agents how to use them through the interaction itself, which is how TAP runs with no skills, no MCP servers, and no setup.

"'Not your keys, not your coins' misses an important fact. You are always outsourcing trust, even with self-custody." So the question was never whether you're trusting someone. It's who, and how you'd know if they got it wrong. Read more: news.bitcoin.com/security/ca...

Socratic APIs: The Skill-Free Agent Architecture
MCP needs a server per service. Skills go stale and blow up your context. Socratic APIs teach agents how to use them through the interaction itself, which is how TAP runs with no skills, no MCP servers, and no setup.
020
human.tech @human.tech · 31/07/2026
Building our API as a Socratic API eliminated our need for MCP servers or skills and greatly increased performance on smaller models and models with minimal harnesses.
110
human.tech @human.tech · 31/07/2026
- give agent a bootstrap /instructions route - walk them through their first standard requests and where to find more niche requests - make error messages perscriptive: tell agents what they likely did wrong and have example working requests they can try next.
110
human.tech @human.tech · 31/07/2026
To fix this, we made tap the first of what we called "Socratic APIs," APIs that correct agents' thinking rather than overload them with facts. It's a relatively simple idea: instead of rigid, upfront docs or code, simply:
110
human.tech @human.tech · 31/07/2026
Skills were insufficient too; we frequently struggled with small model performance, conflicting/hallucinated skills, and memories agents would make for APIs.
110
human.tech @human.tech · 31/07/2026
When building tap.human.tech, MCP was not feasible for most credentials as MCP servers would miss niche endpoints and frequently break. Because agents could not access the MCP server codebases, they could not work around these problems.

TAP — Credential isolation for AI agents
Stop leaking secrets to your agents. TAP is a credential proxy: your agent calls APIs by credential name, never sees the secret values, and sensitive calls can wait for your approval.
540
human.tech @human.tech · 31/07/2026
Skills added more flexibility by avoiding so much overspecification. But skills often become outdated and then are left specifying incorrect information. Skills require significant context too, which does not scale, does not work without harnesses, anddegrades performance of smaller models.
110
human.tech @human.tech · 31/07/2026
MCP servers were brittle: they took logic *away* from the agents, moving it to deterministic code. This meant a loss of flexibility: if they were missing an endpoint or had a bug, agents could not retry or workaround without having access to and modifying the MCP server.
110
human.tech @human.tech · 31/07/2026
MCP and skills opened up a new era of agentic power: tool use. Originally, MCP allowed a standardized interface for agents to communicate with external services. Yet, within months, agent users had began replacing MCP servers with skills, a new yet simpler method for tool access.
