Ironically for the Barrow rider, his bike sparked again just as the two Vikings went through, but it was too late for him to make up lost ground. #HullNeedsSpeedway

When Craig Pendlebury took the lead they seemed unlikely to get it, but with two laps to go Pendlebury’s machine cut out and Cowland and Mackay were able to go through.

back. An 11th heat 5-1 by Mackay and Argall reduced the arrears to a point, and after a draw in the next, Vikings needed at least a 4-2 in the last to win.

With the lead continually switching, Barrow went ahead in heat 8 with a 5-1 and improved it with a 4-2 in the 10th. Five points down and with three heats to go, Hull looked in trouble, but with reserve Mullarkey and Eddie Argall giving Alan Cowland and guest Mal Mackay tremendous support, they hit

The lead changed hands again in the third which Barrow took 4-2, but Hull regained the advantage in the best with a 4-2. Sampson and Sheldrick restored Barrow’s lead in heat 5 with their second 5-1, but successive 4-2 wins by Hull gave them a one-point lead at halfway.

Barrow made an excellent start when Mike Sampson and Sid Sheldrick rode a 5-1 in the opening heat. The lead was only short-lived for Vikings scored a 5-0 after a Chris Roynon, who failed to complete any of his three rides, retired with engine trouble.

This was one of the few occasions when anybody was overtaken, but the meeting still provided plenty of excitement.

In heat 6 he showed tremendous courage after being left at the gate. Few riders had even attempted what he did, but Mullarkey turned on the power, and at the second bend rocketed from fourth to first.

One rider who really enjoyed the conditions was Vikings’ reserve Kelvin Mullarkey. He scored a magnificent paid maximum off five rides, and looked completely at home ploughing through the mud and water.

The match seemed almost certain to be postponed, and under these circumstances the gate of 1,500 was good, even though it was the lowest in Vikings’ history.

Heavy rain through the afternoon had left the track almost under water despite track manager Colin Tucker’s efforts to pump it away.

OTD 53 years ago - An hour before tonight’s challenge match with Barrow Bombers at the Boulevard, Hull Vikings promoter Ian Thomas was all set to call it off, but he got the shock of his life when the riders unanimously voted in favour of riding, and Vikings went on to snatch a last-heat victory by

A 3-3 draw in the final race was enough to clinch overall victory but the loss of Childs for three heats undoubtedly cost Vikings a win in this leg. #HullNeedsSpeedway

Having lost captain Tony Childs following a three-man crash, Vikings looked hard pushed, but a magnificent piece of team riding by Wilson and Bottomley earned a 5-1 against Arthur Price and Jim Ryman.

Vikings had an 18-12 lead after five heats. A determined counter-attack put Boston 25-23 ahead by heat 8. Boston increased their lead to six points and with two heats to go Vikings seemed beaten.

Ian Bottomley was in magnificent form at Boston. The hero of last week’s 41-36 win, he is still riding with a bruised spine, but he scored 11 points to finish as second to Reg Wilson who collected 12.

OTD 55 years ago - Hull Vikings, although beaten 40-38 at Boston, won their two-legged challenge against the Barracudas by 79-76, and after last Wednesday’s flare-up the return match went without incident.

Going into the sudden-death final the trophy was still anybody’s but it was Scully who stole the glory aa he flew out of the gate to claim the title despite a brave effort from Dicken who held off Beveridge and Emson to grab second. #HullNeedsSpeedway

Richard Emson produced the undoubted ride of the night in heat 18, when he clipped the fence on the home straight and somehow managed to stay on before rounding Lee Dixon on the very next turn to secure his fourth win of the night.

There were also a number of spills as the action hotted up, and Scott Donovan was the main victim, twisting an ankle in a heat 12 tumble which forced him to withdraw from the remainder of the meeting.

Hull Vikings @hullvikings.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
Emson was particularly impressive as he won most of his points from the back with some spectacular overtaking manoeuvres, and Beveridge was equally as eye-catching notching up three race wins, including one over Scully in heat 12.

The young Vikings star was also in top-form, dropping his only point to Scully in heat 8, whilst Berwick duo Will Beveridge and Richard Emson also produced some thrilling speedway to finish third and fourth respectively.

Hull Vikings @hullvikings.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
The young Scot, who arrived as one of the pre-meeting favourites, certainly did not disappoint as he dropped only a single point in his qualifying rides before claiming overall victory from local star Lee Dicken in a thrilling finale.

McMillan and Graham gained Vikings’ third 5-1 of the meeting in heat 10, and although Sheffield won heat 11 4-2, Vikings’ two points were enough to assure them of victory. #HullNeedsSpeedway

McMillan made no mistake and in winning came within a second of the record. Gardner and Beaton then rode magnificently for their 5-1, and in the next heat Gardner partnered Graham to a second 5-1.

Hull Vikings @hullvikings.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
In heat 6, McMillan was fortunate not to be excluded after colliding with Sheffield’s Rod Haynes. Referee Bob Owen, however, could not see whether McMillan had touched Haynes and decided to call all four riders back for the re-run.

The Vikings made a tremendous start to the meeting by taking an 8-4 lead after only two heats. Then, with a little luck and some excellent riding they took charge of the match in heats six, seven and eight, storming into a 31-17 lead.

Hull Vikings @hullvikings.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
After changing his gearing, Mitch Graham’s fortunes changed for the better, and his last two rides brought him 5 points. Bobby Beaton rode exceptionally well, although he failed to win a heat, but his 8 points were invaluable.

Hull Vikings @hullvikings.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
Gardner returned two of the fastest times of the night, and he might easily have scored more than 8 points had he not had engine failure in his last heat. Oxford’s Richard Greer, guesting for Steve Gresham, did a magnificent job in strengthening Hull’s middle order.

Reserve, Gardner, was the most impressive of the Hull riders. Although this has not been a particularly happy opening First Division season for him, he showed his true potential tonight.

Hull Vikings @hullvikings.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
Angermuller, though, rode badly. The West German seems to have lost all his confidence and it now seems extremely doubtful whether he will be back next season. Even though these two only scored three points between them. Hull had enough strength in depth to carry them through.

On a night when little went wrong for Hull, the only disappointments were the form of Tommy Roper and Seppi Angermuller. Roper, however, could be excused for he had other things on his mind. His wife is ill in hospital after the premature birth to their second daughter.

It was so good that before the meeting, Sheffield’s No. 1 Bob Valentine said: “Somebody could quite easily break the record tonight. If not, they will get near it.” Valentine was right, for Vikings’ McMillan and Gardner came within a second of Scott Autrey’s 71.4sec. record.

Tattersall has had to take a lot of criticism this season, but nobody could grumble about the track tonight. Hours of hard work after a fortnight of heavy rain left the Boulevard circuit in immaculate condition.

Hull Vikings @hullvikings.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
The Hull captain got plenty of support, for Bobby Beaton, Robbie Gardner, guest rider Richard Greer and Mitch Graham were all in superb form. They engineered Vikings’ first victory over Sheffield, although Hull’s team manager Derek Tattersall must share the credit.

On paper they looked far too strong, but the Vikings, brilliantly led by captain Jimmy McMillan, took an early lead and never allowed Sheffield to make a challenge. McMillan just missed a 12-point maximum when narrowly beaten in his last race by ex-Viking Reg Wilson.

Sheffield, who won both legs of the Knock-Out-Cup, beating Ipswich 41-37 at Foxhall-road and then thrashing them 49-29 in the second leg at Sheffield on Monday, seemed certain to gain their third victory over the Vikings at the Boulevard this season.

Hull Vikings @hullvikings.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
The Vikings won by a convincing 45-33, and although the victory did not lift them off the bottom of the table, it sent the fans home full of optimism for next season.

Graham Drury came in as a reserve replacement in the next and, with Beaton, scored a 4-2 to reduce the arrears to 30-24. A heat leader, following another 5-1 through Curoso and Graham. Vikings were only two points adrift. Then, unbelievably Vikings drew level when Graham and Beaton scored a 4-2.

Vikings revival started in heat 8. They brought in Graham as a tactical substitute and Beaton as rider replacement for Egon Muller, and the move paid off handsomely with a 5-1.

Early in the meeting it looked as though Vikings were heading for a thrashing. After four heats they were 17-7 down and after seven 27-15 in arrears. But Beaton and Graham inspired them to pull back the 12-point deficit.
