Was he supporting immigration? As a lifelong immigrant, I don’t think I’ve ever seen any politician actually say “immigration is a good policy idea and we should do more of it”, the best I’ve hoped for is “immigration isn’t bad and a wall is stupid”

“There is a question that hovers over Irish politics: what will the parties of power do when they start to panic about losing it? Last week, after their joint debacle in the presidential election, we got the grim answer: turn on immigrants.” - @fotoole.bsky.social

If I were running the DNC, there would be Democratic Party sponsored food relief banks across the country right now that specifically welcomed anyone regardless of party affiliation. Along with the food, there could be voter registration and links to runforsomething.net

You should care about the wellbeing of people outside of your immediate family, and make decisions and take actions accordingly.

Protesting won’t solve this, but it’s step one.

I get the instinct to “focus on the good things”, but that’s 2010s shit. If now is not the time to find your nearest protest, bring your friends and family, and build a movement, then all hope for the future is gone. Scroll cat videos on TikTok until you burn in a global thermonuclear war I guess.

A story in two parts. Gript is the propaganda wing of violent right wing politics. They exist to try and push politics rightwards and pull back hard-won rights. They target and try to redirect people's righteous anger at government policy onto migrants, asylum seekers, and LGBTQ people. #Gript

They say the UK ONS "did perhaps the most thorough tracking of long-COVID rates through late 2022, the risk of long-term complications had been going down with reinfection" - it's self reported data from a survey, labelled "experimental statistics" and says "We advise caution when using the data."

Your work!! YWA, MP and IBBK. Usually people are talking about a specific culture war issue, and a lot of the time you have covered it somewhere or other. Then if they don’t pull a stupid boomer “I don’t like how their voice sounds and they swear too much”, they get hooked on your thorough analysis.

Yep. Living in Berlin I was constantly struck by the ability of Germans to acknowledge the horrors of the Holocaust and in the next breath declare genocidal racism against Muslims.
the conviction among Germans that “they had left the rabid racism of their forebears far behind them may have paradoxically allowed for the unabashed expression of different forms of racism”. This partly accounts for the extraordinary callousness, bordering on racial contempt, in Germany over the fate of Palestinians.

You might've missed that Europe is largely electing republican style far right parties these days, including the Netherlands, which has the additional problem of not having any available housing because the farmers have a monopoly on land and nitrogen emission budget.

Today is the first day I can properly campaign—had to give 2 weeks notice for time off I got leeway to attend some events during the day but a short election campaign on the government's chosen dste excludes workers and benefits the status quo There's a reason the Dáil of full of landlords #GE24

Today I'll play more with embeddings for features like - Fuzzy search candidate statements for topics of interest - Clustering statements to compare and identify groups - "Similar candidates" by statement I'm missing a lot of statements though - mostly from the far right parties and independents.

Progress report on the Candidate Viewer #ge24 irish-election-2024.vercel.app Yesterday I matched a lot of records that hadn't matched automatically, as well as made a page to clearly see which records still need matching. Mostly in a good state now. Also started playing with embeddings.

Yeah I think xitter is almost impossible, and most candidates aren't on bsky, threads, mastodon. Not sure on the state of mastodon, tiktok, & linkedin. Another one maybe too ambitious for now is to get mentions of candidates from news services (incl. local outlets).

#ge24 has anyone done a freedom of information request for the nomination forms received by returning officers that were rejected?

Hugh @hughrawlinson.me · 21/11/2024
All the returning officer websites use Joomla, featuring unmaintained plugins from permanently closed businesses.

This website is, honest to god, a critical piece of infrastructure in Irish democracy: irishro.com - it hosts the nomination form for the general election. When this is all over I'll have to go looking for who got the contract.

That would be great, thanks. We'll see how things are then, but at the moment, the things that spring to mind are: - data matching - delving for more open data about the candidates - finding the candidates on social media and finding a way to collect posts

Next steps: - More data from the party websites - Candidate statements (and embeddings which is where the real fun begins) - Show candidates "neighbors" based on geodata If I get help I'd love to get data from social media, find more open datasets to join in, and anything else you can think of.

Work continues on my candidate information site for #ge24. Today I added - Candidate images - Data collected from the returning officers - That required manual mapping because of the sheer number of candidates who can't keep their name spelled consistently - Geocoded that data Check it out!
