I live in Canada where these trucks are depressingly common but I’m visiting my family in the UK right now & am genuinely horrified to see how many of these big trucks there are, even in my home town of Wolverton with very narrow streets. They have to park on the pavement or block the road. Awful

Ha ha! “Reality is not reality. Reality is only what I tell you it is”. The trouble here is that he is too dumb to realize that most people are not as dumb as him.

Gas is indeed still too cheap… but it would have to go waaay up before people consider getting out of their personal tanks in exchange for some other more sensible and economical mode of transportation. It’s a mindset and high gas prices won’t change that.

I was an addiction counsellor for years & I’m also a cyclist. I would liken it more to a cult like the folks who will always support trump no matter what. There’s a compulsive quality to addiction which I don’t see in car dependency but it’s almost cultish-their unwavering support of cars.

I’m in the uk right now (just visiting family) and it’s remarkable how many people have commented on how much they love Carney for the way he’s standing up to trump. People here usually don’t even know who the Canadian prime minister is! There’s such an appetite to stand up to trump

“Drivers are trustworthy” 🤣😂🤣😂🤣 I beg to differ based on the evidence of my own eyes and ears every single time I ride my bike.

When I look at this I immediately feel unsafe thinking about walking through here alone. I don’t mind cycling through these underground tunnels because I’m moving faster but walking… no.

I’m sure it must also be better for their mental health to have this kind of freedom and independence. Do you know if this has also been researched?

It’s not a thing to believe in like religion. It’s science. I get frustrated by how many reporters don’t challenge that framing. Also, super troubling how committed his supporters are to him. Feels exactly like the maga crowd in the US. It’s a cult

Yeah. I still have a Jetta for when I’m travelling a longer distance but generally ride my bike everywhere. I live in Canada, not the UK, and the problem of this arms race but for cars is much worse here. Some people need them… fine. The vast majority dont.

Yes I know… but this is what they say to justify the “both sides” point of view even though usually one side is an expert telling the truth and the other is some nut job from an opaquely funded right wing think tank who is trying to mislead the public. I agree they need a major overhaul.

Google has now renamed Lake Ontario for US users. They don’t even show the real name in brackets. I used a VPN to compare: Apple hasn’t renamed it (at least not yet), nor has Dutch service Here WeGo or OpenStreetMap. Yet another reason to ditch Google, and US tech more broadly.

The BBC are supposed to be impartial but they have come under huge criticism in recent years for taking that to ridiculous extremes with any topic from this to Brexit to climate change. The both sides-ism means they just don’t seriously report facts anymore. Such a shame

“Dutch people cycle an average of 2.6km each per day. If this pattern was replicated worldwide, annual carbon emissions would drop by 686 million tonnes. This mammoth figure exceeds the entire carbon footprint of most countries, including the UK, Canada, Saudi Arabia and Australia.” @euronews.com

Cycling like the Dutch would slash the world’s carbon footprint
If everybody cycled like the Dutch, we could offset the UK or Australia’s entire carbon footprint.

It’s so great now! I moved 16yrs ago to Canada & the years before I moved there was a notable increase in cycling but when I went back to visit last year… wow! It’s so much more popular now & the infrastructure is much better. They have the ULEZ too so air quality is also much improved

I agree. I think it’s ok that he did the video but he could have included in the video some of the other things that actually make cyclists much safer than helmets do. Bit of a missed opportunity and could reinforce that narrative that so many of us are trying to push back against

So infuriating. I want to live in a world where these research findings are enough for authorities to say “ok no more big trucks”. It’s so depressing that human life seems so secondary to power/ convenience or whatever it is these death machines represent for people.

Wondering how many Americans are buying this 💩? Any sane person can see Carney is the rational actor here… so I guess what I’m really asking is how many Americans retain some level of sanity, because from the outside looking in, Trump is still way too popular for a historically unpopular president!

You’re spot on here. I’m European but live in Canada and feel this sentiment right across the developed world. Voting trump out won’t be enough to restore that trust because people have realized that it’s too risky for one country to have that much power.

Nope. I moved from Europe to North America. There are cities in North America that are doing a lot to make active transit much more feasible (eg New York, Portland, Seattle, Montreal). The issue is bad city planning that almost always prioritizes cars

Heather Talbot @htalbot-art.bsky.social · 23/08/2026
Evidenced by many comments in this thread-people tend to give up cycling (or not start) if it feels too dangerous. We need better infrastructure almost everywhere

Heather Talbot @htalbot-art.bsky.social · 23/08/2026
But surely this is because far more people cycle in the Netherlands so that number is bound to be higher. That’s why the original graph compares it to average miles cycled.

I wonder if the different attitude is also because most drivers in the Netherlands are probably also cyclists so they are more thoughtful about how they interact with

HG Wells is alleged to have remarked "Every time I see an adult on a bicycle, I no longer despair for the future of the human race”. You could see this shocking chart as an index of civilisation. A country which gets this issue so badly wrong is likely to fail in many other ways.

Cities aren’t loud… but cars are loud! Also, nothing seems to make people unaware of what’s around them quite like being ensconced in a huge metal box with music on, screens running and air bags at the ready! They just want to get where they’re going and don’t care about who’s ’in the way’

Americans don’t realize that this is much bigger than Trump now, because now every other country in the world has realized that they are just one bad election away from being right back here again even after Trumps long gone. The world is moving on and the balance of power is shifting

“For years, politicians and pundits opposed to the Ulez have cynically sought to turn questions of public health into a crude culture war. Today, though, it’s clear that we’re winning the battle against toxic air in the capital – and it’s London’s children who are reaping the rewards.”

I wear a helmet and that’s my preference but I will continue to challenge folks who seem to think this is the main issue with cycling safety. Just feels like victim blaming to me. If it’s not safe for cyclists to ride their bikes in the city then there needs to be better infrastructure for cyclists
