Plot twist: she worked at the swab company all that time just to get away with all those murders. Genius really.

Unlike the advocates for so-called "ideological diversity" and even "absolute free speech," who say & do next to nothing re: actual issues of student speech, @aaup.org & @osuaaup.bsky.social are standing up for student free speech, (despite OSU chalking ban & threats!) + supporting academic freedom

The Department of Integrative Biology at UT Austin has two open positions for assistant professors, one in evolutionary biology and one in mechanistic processes. Please share. Apply here: apply.interfolio.com/193270
Two Assistant Professor Positions in Evolutionary Biology and Mechanistic Processes

Description
The Department of Integrative Biology at The University of Texas at Austin seeks to fill two faculty positions in the areas of Evolutionary Biology and Mechanistic Processes, broadly defined. We are looking for candidates who are advancing (1) evolutionary biology or (2) the mechanistic understanding of organismal processes. These positions will be filled at the level of Assistant Professor.

Qualifications
Candidates should be using innovative approaches in evolutionary biology and/or the mechanistic understanding of whole-organism processes. Mechanistic processes include, but are not limited to, behavior, biomechanics, cognition, physiology, and development. The phylogenetic scope of the Evolutionary Biology position may include eukaryotes, prokaryotes, viruses, and the scale may include individual molecules to entire ecosystems and beyond. Candidates for either position may employ experimental, theoretical, or computational frameworks, or a combination thereof. Special consideration will be given to applicants with demonstrated potential for integrating across our target disciplines.

We seek applicants with a strong record of high-quality research, publications, potential for extramural funding, and a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentorship. A PhD or equivalent is required at the time of appointment, and postdoctoral research experience is strongly recommended.

Dialect map rules out Northeast and deep south, but otherwise does not know what to do with me. Grew up in Ohio, spent months-to-years in Minnesota, Iowa, California, New Zealand, and Australia. Most of that time was on large campuses with colleagues from around the world. Result, I'm a dialect mutt

Makes sense. People definitely change with power. I've noticed that empathetic people often lose their "em" when they get even a small taste of power.

Oh yeah. The inheritance of acquired characteristics. Money and entitlement are both socially heritable. Tough to identify the original cause with so many colinear variables.

I wonder if the correlation is correct but the direction of cause and effect is backwards. Meaning, those who lie, cheat, and steal are more likely to become rich and powerful, rather than the power causing bad behavior. Maybe I'm too used to academia.

And nobody should have expected it to. But, you know, money.

You know where I stand on this after too many years in the Vermivera world. I agree with your perspective and I think you see it objectively. Anyone on the outside looking in could take all the evidence and conclude it's one species. So why is it still 2? Money. Not for birds. For people. That's it.

Every morning, my kid takes Lilikoi for a walk. Along the way, they pick up newspapers and carry them up to the front door for elderly folks in the neighborhood. Nobody told her to, and they might not know who she is. I love everything about this girl, but I'm most proud of her empathy and kindness.

Musk Turtle (Sternotherus odorathus). Also knows as a stinkpot. You got a great pic of diagnostic characteristics. The size of the head, the heavy pointed nose, the very ventral mouth, and the signature two distinct yellow lines, and the very smooth round carapace. My turtle expert spouce told me.

Has this been corroborated since the original paper in 2015? I remember reading it and that the authors were mostly speculating as to what happened to the birds. Then it got swept up in the media whirlwind and quickly became 'scientific fact'. But I haven't seen any research followup.

But who will the philanthropies fund? NSF, NIH, and others were making real progress in understanding that great science happens at institutions of all sizes. Without careful effort, will we fall back to funding based on letterhead prestige and those with the budget for a propaganda machine?
