My campus in deep blue California has spent the last week cleaning anti-gay graffiti off our buildings and now this crap drops. Never forget who's really vulnerable here. (Oh, and there were some swastikas, too. When someone shows you who they are, etc.)

I think the "debate" about bringing iced coffee to job interviews is effective at distracting people from the really bad job market, the high unemployment rate for Black women, ongoing mass layoffs in tech and media, and how Gen Z workers are refusing to adopt many toxic aspects of corp work culture

given that i can't seem to avoid AI no matter what i do, that it scrapes information without consent, that it has plagiarized my friends' and colleagues' work, that data centers are literally choking US cities, that it's driven up energy costs for everyone, i'd say AI has plenty of rights.

Pair this with the calls to once again involuntary confine Americans with untreated/difficult to treat psychiatric disabilities (an issue of course with some overlap with the issue of homelessness) and we're headed for a very dark place indeed.

So good! You articulated beautifully something that's been really horrifying to me lately: the seeming willingness of some "progressives" to throw other (usually marginalized) folks under the bus for expediency and then, when we point that out, to dismiss us entirely:(

one interesting thing so far about loudly hating AI is the way AI lovers are like "wow so you're just totally closed off to hearing another perspective??" as if their perspective hasn't been relentlessly pushed down our throats with no space to push back (particularly in professional settings)

Really proud my union (the California Faculty Association) has issued a strong statement demanding answers and accountability for the global Canvas outage. Otherwise, with the end of the semester upon us, it could too easily be buried in the news cycle. We're already seeing that happen.

I've never trusted Canvas, and this situation only highlights its many. *many* issues. But the thing is, I teach at a state university: most students are working adults. When (if?) this is resolved we will still need to be able to offer pedagogically solid online classes as an option. So, now what?

I firmly believe faculty should decide for themselves if, when, or how they employ AI in the classroom. I have a clear set of rules for my own students. But with their final projects being digital, and most such platforms now embedding AI, it appears to be making things harder, not easier. Sigh.

I told my college students about Clippy: how it used to constantly interrupt you while you were trying to write; and how much AI at the moment reminds me of that experience. They told me AI is increasingly *getting in the way* of their work so I don't think I'm wrong.
