Sorry, 8th inning

Commandant McJew @hsmccann.bsky.social · 15/10/2026
Yeah Steve Bartman had a wild pitch in the 7th, left Mark Prior in for at least 3 too many batters, had Farnsworth issue an IBB to the first batter instead of having Prior do it, loaded the bases with that IBB, and botched a routine double play ball. All in one half-inning.

Like, it’s cool to brag about having been president! I would! Just don’t be a fucking sweaty needy cult leader about it! It’s obv. not his biggest sin but it’s so evocative.

Love the little 44 on the sleeve. This is the difference between trump and other presidents. Obama has his number on his sleeve like an understated “damn right I was potus”. Trump is just “HERES MY NAME ON THE FUCKING KENNEDY CENTER ASSHOLE. AND MY FACE IS ON THE DOJ. LOVE MEEEEE!!!!!”

My go-to at a fried chicken place is a leg quarter. You get a dry breast, it happens sometimes. You get a bad leg/thigh, they don’t know what the fuck they’re doing

What song? I’d love to hear whatever REM song they chose but I’m curious

We got cable when I was about 12 or 13 and at the time Comedy Central basically ran four things: stand up specials, snl reruns, kids in the hall, and the critic. It was an absolutely foundational part of my adolescence. Hachi Machi!

Ok that is awesome and I now have a level to aspire to when I name my fantasy baseball team for the, oh let’s say 2028 season when we have baseball again.

This is why I avoid pro-Palestine protests despite broadly agreeing with them (setting aside the fact that I’m Jewish and likely unwelcome at some of them). Let’s assume arguendo that Mandani likes Israel too much. He’s the mayor of NYC- what’s he gonna do? And is Bibi gonna listen to a Muslim man?

I assume he is/was a DJ or music show host based on context clues (I’m on BBC 2 now/telling Terry Wogan how/ I made it and/what I’ve made is unclear now) but that’s all I got.

Unless you a) have friends with older kids (who are willing to babysit), or b) have kids in daycare where the workers need extra money, it’s really difficult to find someone 14-30+ who is willing to watch your kids! Since our kids left daycare we have found 2 babysitters and ours are 7 & 10!

This is why though I fancy myself a solid writer I could never be a professional. I could never come up with a line as true and evocative and parsimonious as “there was something giddy and gross about it that seemed new, and is now very familiar” Bravo. And it’s a throwaway in a skeet

Two points: 1) non-analytic teams this point basically means the Colorado Rockies, 2) most of these people missed the point of moneyball, which is find the skill that’s undervalued. Like Matt Cain was a really good pitcher who could be had for the peanuts today because his K/9 was 7.6

That’s a “hurt the guy, maybe end his career” play. That was a nasty fencing response from Moore

That looks like a fencing response. He got absolutely wrecked and I hope for his own safety he’s done for the game.

The Illitch family didn’t always make the best moves but they made good ones and always treated the team and its players exactly how you would want them to.

And one of the parents was a lawyer! Imagine telling the court that it’s unfair for him to have to file a brief within the given window and that if he had untimed brief filing it would be more fair for him!

I’m no fan of the college board but I kept having parents complain to me that they couldn’t finish my AP calc tests in a period and I pointed out that if that happens during the actual AP they’ll get a 1 and live with it

Commandant McJew @hsmccann.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
This is one of the handful of hills I will die on as an educator. There is absolutely value in untimed tests but there is also value in timed tests!

The only case I can make for sopranos exclusion (and I do not agree) is: a) it began in 1999 and (being pedantic) the first 2 seasons were not aired in the 21st century B) it is clearly supposed to be an “end of 20th century” show Again, even only considering S3-S6 it clearly belongs!

Anyone who says shit like “long division is unnecessary” or “who needs to know exactly how this contraption works” as a blanket statement might as well wear a neon shirt that says “proud idiot” in sequined letters.

The benefit of me being able to run a mile without stopping isn’t because I make money doing it or because the act has any inherent value. Running a mile gains nothing viz simply running. The value is in the fact that it keeps me physically fit and is a solid measure thereof.

This shit drives me fucking bonkers and I fight this battle in my classroom every day from surly teenagers who have no reason to know better. The idea that the value of knowing or doing something is in the profit or advantage of the ability itself is absolute fucking bullshit

This is the single most true thing about teaching (and schooling) and it’s not even close- there may as well not even be a second thing.

Commandant McJew @hsmccann.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
It’s a shitpost, but it’s also not wrong. The worst Limp Bizket song is better for rocking out in the car than the best Radiohead. And I love Radiohead There’s a class of artist- Radiohead, much of Paul Thomas Anderson, etc- where the artistry is never in doubt but it’s not an “anytime” thing.

Commandant McJew @hsmccann.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
I don’t disagree viz “Bangers” but if you’re looking for bangers from Radiohead you’re barking up the wrong tree. If I want to rock out in my car the shittiest Limp Bizket song is better than the best Radiohead, but I’ll not be dissuaded from the fact that Kid A is a fucking masterpiece

Standardized testing is to college admissions as democracy is to government: absolutely terrible, except everything else we’ve come up with is worse.

Commandant McJew @hsmccann.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
We’re having this issue right now with a local redistricting- our neighborhood might go to a different “worse” school, and on an individual level we should resist that change. But of we all embrace it the school fundamentally can change for the better!
020
Commandant McJew @hsmccann.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
The real bitch of it is that it creates a classic commons dilemma- no one person is better off choosing the worse local option when better ones are available, but if everyone did it the problems would if not go away be significantly lessened
121
Commandant McJew @hsmccann.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
The only solution I can think of is basically full communism in education- no private schools, mandatory public education, all schools are geographically mandated, and funding is completely divorced from or inversely proportional to local wealth. And while I’m at it I’d like a pony

Commandant McJew @hsmccann.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Open enrollment within a district creates an issue where people leave troubled schools instead of investing in them, making them worse and prompting more people to leave. Open enrollment between districts does the same thing at a district level. No one invests in troubled schools, so no fixes
120
Commandant McJew @hsmccann.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Charters don’t have to take anyone they don’t want to, so they take the best of those who apply. That makes the public schools look worse by depriving them of motivated students and families, and they take from the same finite pot of money that public schools use- adding a charter doesn’t add funds
120
Commandant McJew @hsmccann.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
I taught in Memphis, which had all of the above and exacerbated existing issues. Anyone with money sent their kids to private schools, which created public funding issues- lower enrollment=less money, plus people don’t vote for anything that helps public schools bc it doesn’t help their kid
130
Commandant McJew @hsmccann.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
It is really complicated! My experience is that introducing any kind of choice- open enrollment within a district, open enrollment between districts, charters, private- creates all sorts of inequity simple dint of the fact that some people can’t afford to make the choice.
