We explore how people, practices, and social and technological environments interact, using an interdisciplinary approach and qualitative, particularly ethnographic, methods.

I am thinking here of existing research on distributed agency, organizational learning and the extended mind. Let us not buy the genAI slogans and join the hype. On a more theoretical level, it really is old wine in new skins.

In the last decades, approaches like extended and distributed cognition and actor-network theory have been able to show that being extended does not mean just 'using' technology ('helping' an autonomous individual) but extending the whole unit that is acting, learning and has agency.

I think research has long shown that cognition and translation can always be described as distributed and extended, even with 'old technology', and not just because of genAI etc.

I keep reading in current translation literature that we need new theoretical frameworks because genAI has made translation an extended process, and the unit doing the translation has now become a socio-cognitive and -technological entity. Can you understand my frustration when I read that?

Verrückter Fakt des Tages: #vfdt Bei visuell-räumlichem Denken ist normalerweise die rechte Gehirnhälfte dominant. Man könnte daher meinen: Gebärdensprache wird eher rechts verarbeitet. Das stimmt aber nicht. Genau wie bei gesprochener Sprache sind die Sprachzentren in der linken Gehirnhälfte aktiv.
