many of the guidelines are left up to the judges — we get to decide things like “what does “best narrative” mean” or “is a game indie if it has a publisher”. mostly we just discuss each game and our thoughts in a forum with other judges, and then vote for which awards you want to nominate it for

I know it sounds hyperbolic, because usually when these things go viral, you just see a few people posting about it, memeing about it, and joining in on the jokes. but it’s AWFUL. death threats, doxxing, harassment, people finding and threatening your family. over what? potentially being a bad dad?

going viral is always a massively disproportionate punishment for whatever crime the internet decides you committed. even when the target DID do something wrong, it’s not “the consequences they deserve”, it’s medieval public shaming, and it has caused more than one person to decide death is better.

whenever people say “cancel culture isn’t real, it’s just facing the consequences of your actions” I think about all the people who were the target of the internet’s hate for things they didn’t do, or for things that had much more nuance. it can ruin lives, over things that often do not matter
